Because elven things are better, and elves had deer.

Because the first Halla was said to be one of their gods.

Halla are extremely intelligent animals, like the mabari. A pretty popular theory is that they may have even been elves at one point, turned into halla via Ghilan'nain's experiments.

To the Dalish, they are essentially members of the clan.

Huh. Wouldn't regular deer turned into halla via Ghilan'nain's experiments make a bit more sense though? :S

Interesting though, after Solas I always kinda figured Ghila was probably just a shapeshifter mage who was particularly good at it.

I believe people are factoring in the unnatural intelligence of the halla, and the fact that Ghilan'nain's 'mythological' origin story involved an elf being tortured and then turned into a halla.

No proof further than that though, its just a theory.

It is a shame you couldn't have the Inquisitor kill the golden halla and skin it for mats. It would be hilarious to go back with a character wearing a coat made from it, and saying, "Golden Halla? Nope, haven't seen it."

Better yet. Too bad you don't have personality options.

Diplomatic: (Brings the Halla back alive)

Sarcastic: It was rather tasty, too bad I did not have a good wine to go with it....just kidding...no wait I am not...<burps>.

A'hole: I brought it back <shows the elf the Golen Halla skin> you did not say how you wanted it back. It will make a nice jerkin.

I thought it would be easier rounding up the Golden Halla from the back of my horse but the first time I tried it, I accidentally rode over it - not a good result.   I reloaded.

I think the comparison between the Fereldens'  relationship with their mabari and the Dalish with the halla is a reasonable one.   Both creatures are meant to be more intelligent than regular members of their species and are said to choose to serve you rather than compelled.    Both have magical origins; Mabari originally came from Tevinter.    The Dalish revere anything that they think is associated with their glorious past and to them the Halla are something that was not lost to time; hence their special significance.   With most creatures it tends to be the rare white individual that is held in special esteem but since the Halla are already white, this would account for the golden halla being especially revered.

However, it would seem the Halla, like the elves, must be a shadow of their original creation, since the ancient elves rode them into battle but you'd break the back of a modern one trying to do that.

Because they're frail and helpless like them. And everyone is out to get them. They can relate.

Not quite. The hallas guide the aravels, and are even said to guide the dead into the afterlife. According to the codex, "No creature is more revered by the Dalish than the halla. No other animal has a god of its own. These white stags are much larger than ordinary deer, and the Dalish halla keepers carve their antlers as they grow, making them curve into intricate designs. In ancient times, these stags bore elven knights into combat, but since the fall of the Dales, they are used less as mounts and more to pull the aravels."

Felassan also makes reference to halla in their relation to the ancient elves, "We rode the halla. They leapt with such grace and beauty as to make your horses look like Ferelden dogs by comparison. They were smarter, too. Which often made them willful."

You get a like for having "Megatron gets a headache from talking to Rodimus" as your avatar.

On topic, hmm.  The halla are to the Dalish as the Mabari are to Fereldens.  I'd rather have a Mabari, personally, but I haven't developed a method of travel that depends on harnessing another intelligent race as my beast of burden.

I'm getting a headache from seeing what's happened to my Avvar thread.

According to Last Flight, they can apparently fly. Which goes along with the murals you see where elves are riding winged halla into battle. They're associated with griffons, according to one of the astrariums. So the gentle deer we see might be a degenerated form, the same way that the elves have lost their longevity and much of their magical mojo.

I think you can, though? Not sure, but if I remember well, I think I killed it on my first playthrough (because I wasn't sure what I supposed to do with it).

Maybe I'm mistaken, and that was a regular Halla, though, it's been a long time.
