Seriously? Whats this for? This is stupid. Really, game that was designed for a hundreds and hundreds of hours of gameplay and have a great replayablity... have stupid limit!

For the sake of clarity - limit applys to all saves of all characters. Game will not allow you to create a new character if you exceeded this limit.

If it makes you feel better: Xbox has a 50 save limit, and I think PS has even less.

Well, assuming Xbox 360 may not even have HDD at all - understandable. But nextgen and PC? No point for limit there.

Maybe it's something to do with the format of the save file.

Just a guess. I don't even know why either. On my XOne, all save data (all characters and settings) is wrapped in a single file... I don't know how it works for PC.

It is the same 50 save limit for Xbox one as well.

How does one save over 250 times?

One save at a time...

I don't have nearly as many available since I'm on PS3, but manual saving is a good fail-safe against the commitment of autosave. Sometimes, I'll test out certain things and try different dialogue, a different romance or a different major story decision to see how I like it or just because I'm curious, and I like having lots of points to go back to if I don't want certain decisions to be set for a particular PC.

But...I do that too. In fact, I have two people using one account, each with 3 different characters creating a new save at every critical juncture in the game "just in case" and I wasn't even aware such a limit existed.

At a certain point, how do you even keep track of any of it?

I'll have to check my saves. the problem is.. they are all in the same folder, no named saves per character.. so I guess I have to go by dates to know what is there? I wonder why they are not separated by character name? :o

right now I have 75 saves

How does one save over 250 times?

I haven't run across this problem (yet) myself, but from what I understand, it's 250 saves across the board for the PC. So for anyone who usually has 2-3 saves per character, probably not a huge issue, since that leaves a lot of room for many playthroughs. However, for anyone who likes to have multiple saves per character, I can see how the available saves might get used up quickly (I know I like to save before specific cutscenes, in case I want to go back later and get screenshots. I also had a lot of saves on my first two characters, since I was worried that I might hit a bug somewhere, and disliked the idea of either needing to go back several hours or being stuck because my last save wasn't far away enough.)

If it's a format thing or just a game issue, it's tolerable. But if it's just a limitation imposed for arbitrary reasons (such as something to do with cloud storage), then it just seems silly to have such a thing.

I don't think I could have completed the game with only 30 saves, but then chasing bugs and trying to understand them takes its toll.  The game still has some serious problems 128 + days later, but QA certainly seems to be catching up.

I have a funny feeling its a lag or some sort of memory thing, i noticed as i progressed through the game with more and more saves my game seemed to get more and more unstable towards the end, i never used 250 saves but i bet i used a fair wack..

I can't prove it but i bet its a stability thing.

250 separate save files ?  can't see what for, I only keep 2 or 3 saves for a character, some games only have 1 save.

You can copy the old files to a new location freeing space from the current save list. I have more than 600 saves of my first playthrough stored in a backup folder and I am only keeping 4 or 5 in the folder used by the game.

Most players won't probaply even get 250 full, but what am I supposed to do with 30? It gets full with autosaves in no time.

It counts autosaves and milestone-saves in it as well. I have 2-3 save per characters as well, but since my limit is 30 on PS3, it's gets full quite fastly.

It's a problem with building the list of save files.

Mark said they would look at removing the limitation (or at least increasing it), but I guess they weren't able to or haven't gotten around to it yet.

ps4 has a 50 save limit - and that's across all characters AND, i believe, all users. i have 6 characters but most have only 4 or 5 saves since i had to prune them to create my last couple of guys, because my husband is also playing and has about 10 or so saves too.

Without an HDD, you would not even be able to play the game (or most games, on Xbox 360), since some of the game data actually installs to the HDD as does patch data.  There is actually a point of having a hard limit to the number of saves.  Each time you start the game, the game enumerates through the list of game saves.  If you had a very large number of saves, that process would take a long time and possibly cause the game to hang or even crash.  Most likely, this would require a hard reboot of your PC or Console.  Personally, I don't have too many saves and only keep the most recent autosave.  Also, I should probably delete the 1st character I made since I will likely never play that character and doing so would free up 2 or 3 save files.

Personally, I keep between 10 - 20 (ish) saves per character.

I save before each major plot quest so that I can replay them in the future if I want to see different outcomes. This also allows me to go back and replay from earlier points if I make a mess of my game somewhere down the line. Also, I save before major cinematics (like the Skyhold arrival) so that I can enjoy them again and again and again and again....

I expect to have around 8 - 10 characters fully completed by the time DA:4 is out. With less than 25 saves on 10 toons, 250 should suffice. I think the fact that they bothered to limit the PC saves is more so the issue. Kind of like not allowing extra mouse buttons to be bound. PC players are missing these functions which are commonplace and expected in PC games nowadays.

Yeah, PS4 only has a 50 save limit. And you know what stinks about that (aside from the fact that there is a LIMIT)?

That also counts autosaves and milestones.

I had close to 10 characters, with 3-4 hard saves per character, and got the error message that I'd reached my max, when I tried to create a new character. So I went in and counted my save files, and it was less than 50. Then I wondered if the autosaves and milestones counted. I think they do. Or maybe there's something else being counted that I can't see.

I'm guessing the game also takes those things into account when creating a new character. If you're too close to the limit, it won't let you.

Right. Better tell Microsoft about this oversight.

That should give you a hint why they limited the number of saves you can keep - how do you think the game works out which characters you have faced with a huge list of randomly named files like that? Other than by reading them all, of course? And how long would you be willing to wait for the game to do that when you click "load game" in the menu?

More files would inevitably result in noticable delays when you open menus, and Bioware decided that they'd rather have a lower number of saves to prevent people from complaining about unresponsive interfaces.

How about you try this - take the save files you have, and copy and paste them until there are maybe 2500 and then try play the game. When I tried, it took 90s for the list to show up after I pressed "load game". (Which is an improvement over ME2 which simply froze for 5min when subjected to the same experiment)

There are ways, but it's hardly an arbitrary imposition - for example, you could do what every music player ever does and scan your collection of music files periodically and then use that index file when you need to look up stuff later which should work nicely since you will only very rarely add files via 3rd party programs

right now I have 75 saves

The last digits of the name of the save indicate the character. For example my Alexandra saves end by "CAF32400" and my Daniel saves end by "BD48EB9A". To know what ending corresponds to what character save a new game, exit the game and look at the name of the save you've just saved  :)

If you are playing on PC just move the older saves of each character to another folder. There is no need to delete them.
