The 3 endings could easily be written in. It could work whether they have your past choices imported or not. Destroy: show some damage to certain areas or just say everything is repaired!

Control: Nobody sees the Reapers anymore or they can be seen guarding planets but can't be interacted with.

Synthesis: Time has passed and the tech that laced into people's skin no longer shows.

Other than the fate's of the Krogan/Geth/Quarians that would be it. And who knows how big of a role those species will have.

The next ME will be both a sequel and a reboot with a new cast in a new situation with barely any connection other than a few signs of what happened in the past.

Its not the visual difference that is the main stumbling place in synthesis. Its the forced change on everyone in the galaxy that makes them something quite different. Plus all the husks and other reaper forces dont die. What becomes of them?

And reapers are a huge problem. They are simply an overwhelming power that would change the way things work in the galaxy too much.

I fully expect Next ME to be a reboot though they may not ever call it that.

I hope BW takes responsability for the ending they wrote and deal with this mess so that the story continues and the galaxy we loved and played in remain existent. A reboot would mean an admission they did a poor job with ME3 and quite frankly that would be disappointing. C'mon BW you are a grown up company. Take your responsabilities, solve the mess you cornered yourself in and keep the story going. Time to be coherent.

It's not a reboot, so it's irrelevant.

That's still up to Bioware but I hope you are right

I don't believe the next game is a reboot

If it is a reboot, will they bring back  the same characters? If they do I would have Sam and Steve in the first one to learn more about their background. I'm sure Sam and Steve fans might like that. Change a few of the missions and I would include a mission that would involve going to dark space for the 2nd game. Lots of things can be done for a reboot.

The guy tells the kid details have changed over time. That's Bioware's get out jail free card. What details changed? That could mean anything..

Instead of a reboot, bring Shepard back for one more game. I would make this game after the one that is currently being developed. since it most likely have nothing to do with the previous three.

Yeah I also think its not going to be a reboot. And I think at least for this game they want to distance themselves which means as little references to the characters in the existing trilogy. However I think the one true way for them to revive the good will is to do a sequel. Maybe a 100 years after the war or a bit more.

I'd rather not. I want an all new story, not a rehash of the reaper one

ark theory is not a reboot, its a cheap way of avoiding the endings without even trying to resolve them or move past them. and it brings in a whole host of its own problems.

I would be disappointed if they made a reboot. They would be better off creating a new IP instead.

I'm more than fine with midquel though, especially if it ends after the events of trilogy.

I really doubt it'll be a reboot. But why don't they squash these rumors to avoid confusion and wild speculations?

Although speaking for myself, I would prefer a reboot.

A reboot requires rehashing the reaper story. I just cannot see them doing this.

People wanna a reboot so they can play Commando (the movie) all through out the story and everybody lives to see another day.  EDI lives to see another day, Mordin lives to see another day, the Geth live to see another day, without our DNA being repatriated to some kind of weird alien circuit.  Hell, even Kaiden/Ashley live to see another day.  NOBODY DIES ON MY WATCH.

Also, Commander Shepard lives to see another day.  The final scene will be him with his love interest in one arm and a gun in the other.  His crew will be at his feet grasping his legs.

Boom.   Perfect ending.

Ugh.   That was painful just typing that.

What about a RESTART? of the franchise? not reboot. Just clean new game without Shepard but all of the elements of the trilogy is there? also no reapers

Not really a restart but an alternative universe. Both restart and reboot are essentially the same thing they require a RE-DOING of what already has been seen and done. Stripping out cmdr Shepard and Reapers just makes it an alternative universe.

What about Genophage/Geth/Quarian conflict, Cerberus etc or do they get rubbed out in this alternate universe too.

This sounds good to me. I don't know if you would call it a RESTART, just another story in the mass effect setting. The new writers would be free to create something new and would not be hindered by the baggage of the trilogy endings. They already stated that Shepard would not be involved, so a REBOOT is not happening. The personal red/blue/green choices would be safe and if you wanted to revisit Shepard and companions, you could go back and replay the trilogy.

Correct me if I am wrong but what I do know is that an alternate universe involves the same cast but the the settings and plots are well... altered. While a restart is not a re-telling or re-doing what has been done... it is totally new and different but the core mechanics are intact i.e. space travel, spaceships, aliens and romance but the plot and protagonist and even the setting will be change. Just like my explanation in my original thread about Final Fantasy hence my Alternate Universe + Restart / Reboot theory... it involves 3 theories

Anyway the main point is that if they do a completely different galaxy with completely different things. Or even the same galaxy with the same species but a different setting. It won't feel like a Mass Effect game. I know some would argue that it still is and so on and so forth but for me personally if they decide to restart/reboot/reimagine/alternative then it won't feel like a Mass Effect game. It will be a ME clone.

Meh, it would still be a waste.  Ditching 99%+ of this galaxy because Bioware didn't plan ahead.

Exactly, getting a new galaxy and all new cast of species, issues and history seems like a huge waste. It would be as if star wars just decided to forget all about its setting for the next movie, oh wait.
