Those greyish looking guys that come up out of the ground with the orc/mordor looking swords are technically darkspawn right? I've seen some cinematics of Darkspawn from the DA2 demo and they look very different?

They look different because they are on a new engine. DAO and DA2 were done on the Eclipse engine while DAI was done on the Frostbite engine. Bioware also has been tweaking the appearance of the races to find what they like the best.

It would be nice if they had armor again

The darkspawnss with the swords in DA:I aren't actually the same Darkspawn Hurlocks in DA:O or DA:2. They are ghouls, humans corrupted by the blight

They do still do. The ones you normally see are ghouls.

It's a bit odd how the Archer Darkspawn all wear snazzy hats

Greyspawn?
Well the ones in this game aren't starting a blight so they are not quite as dark as the ones in DA:O

The grey, shrunken things in the Fallow Mire and Crestwood are undead, if that's what you mean. Darkspawn are usually wearing armor and ghouls are a bit...fleshier?

Someone posted close-ups of the Ghouls in DAI.
Needless to say they're as creepy and freaky as ever.
