I know absolutely nothing about this game other then its a RPG/shooter. I got it for 5 bucks. I'm usually the type to restart 100 times and learn everything I can about character builds and skills. I hoping to break that habit and just jump right in. Some advice would be helpful so I don't totally screw my character over thats usually how the cycle starts. Thanks.

Don't bother with sniper rifles until a good quarter of the way through the game, at least, when you dump enough points into the talent. The wobble is beyond atrocious and damn near gives me motion sickness. Also, the combat in general is a bit clunky, but you get used to it quickly. If you're choosing a class to play, I would go either Adept or Soldier. Adept makes everything a cake walk since the powers are stupidly OP, and Soldier is just as easy, but more focused on weapons. Soldiers start out a bit slow though, you need to invest points into the weapon talents so your accuracy isn't so terrible,

Level X Spectre Weapons w/ Frictionless Materials and an ammo mod make the combat so easy it's practically cheating.

Can't go wrong with being a soldier and muscling through everything by holding the left mouse button. If you feel like min-maxing a bit, the shotgun can be very powerful with the right mods and skill investment.

Otherwise, pick up an assault rifle, pour skill points into it, and pump some lead mass-accelerator particles.

Depends on what class you play.

Soldier - You'll be the muscle in the 3-man party. Focus on defensive/passive abilities and put points in any gun skill you want (I'd recommend Assault Rifle and Sniper/Shotgun)

Vanguard - You can soak up some damage and also deal it too. Equally focus on defensive and offensive biotic abilities, and a few points in the Shotgun skill does not hurt either.

Engineer - You'll be a support specialist, whose job is to debuff the enemy by taking out their shields, disabling their weapons, stunning them or hacking robots. Put points in all of the tech talents, they're very useful. You might consider spending points on First Aid and Medicine too, and you'll be an effective healer for the team. Weapon skills are not a prority, but you can put some points in the Pistol skill.

Infiltrator - Ranged attacker with some tech skills as support, focus on Sniper weapon skill and add some engineer talents to disable/debuff enemies.

Adept - Pure biotic character with great crowd control and offensive abilites. Go for every biotic skill, use them and you won't have to fire a single shot in the entire game. Be careful though, as adepts are a bit squishy against tougher enemies, so biotic barrier and good armor is more than recommended.

Senintel - This class combines the elements of engineer and adept, a pure support class with good offensive abilites on the side. Go for mainly the engineer skills and take some biotics too (especially barrier to keep yourself alive). Has no weapon skills, improves pistol skill with leveling up the passive class skill.

Next, you need to decide what personality are you going to play, because it's gonna greatly define your character. You can choose from different backgrounds and psychological profiles which influence your dialogue options, give unique sidequest and change the ammount of moral points you gain. For example, a ruthless Earthborn character, who lived on the streets of a city in poverty and joined a gang can easily maximize his Renegade (pragmatic, no-nonsense, I-get-the-job-done-whatever-the-cost morality) bar. The other morality is Paragon, which is defined by helping people or not willing to sacrafice lives of innocents for the sake of a mission. These moralities are usually represented in dialogue options, most of times a third, neutral option is available as well.

Other than that, I belive you are about to embark on one of the greatest journeys you've ever taken with this game, and I hope you're going to have one helluva time with it as we did.

If you feel inclined to quit, remember that the second game is worth the grind.

For your first playthrough just enjoy the gameplay, characters and dialogue. Take your time.

Once you complete your first playthrough and enjoyed it, start another playthrough playing a different class and doing missions in a different order. Make decisions different from your first playthrough

Weapons:

Pistols are King of the Kill - Marksman power turns them into death-spewing lazer beams with THE highest dps out of everything. Since every class has access to pistol training, it's your best bet as a starting focus for weapon skills. Also, that Stinger I, treasure it!

Shotguns are OP - Earlier shotguns not so much, but around midgame when you start getting the good ones, they start dealing atrocious amounts of damage, have lots of force behind them (very handy against specific enemies you'll soon realize who I meant) and once you get hands onto the more accurate ones, they are genre-untypical accurate. You can snipe with them. Carnage is unspectacular, but solid.

Assault rifles are meh - Between pistols and shotguns they simply can't keep up. Mind you that a properly kitted high quality AR is pretty deadly, accurate and has long firing endurance (especially with Overkill activated), but a properly spec'ed pistol will easily out-damage any AR of equal quality.

Sniper rifles are meh, but fun - Aim wobble makes them nearly useless at early game and when you get to the point that you've invested enough points and got decent sniper rifles, your pistols and shotguns will do much better. That said: 2x Rail Extension VII + HE Rounds X = Bazooka. Or you can get crazy with the ingame console and get yourself 2x Hyper Rail X + HE Rounds X and turn your sniper rifle into a murder cannon that makes the Mako shrink with insecurity issues. Not really optimal, but it's fun as hell!

Classes:

Soldier is meh - Really only thing worthwhile to the soldier is the access to all weapon skills and the Immunity.

Adept is OP - One word: ragdolls. Biotics in ME1 ignore shields. So go crazy with those Singularities, Throws, Lifts and fling them about! Excellent crowd control, but squishy.

Engineer is okay - Not as good as biotics, but at least the tech powers make for an enjoyable playstyle of sabotaging enemies if you like that sort of thing. Your weapons don't work? Such a shame, that. Has a couple good crowd control powers like Neural Shock (great against charging organic enemies, you'll know who) and AI hacking makes you go puppeteer against synthetic enemies.

Vanguard is most OP - Biotics and shotguns, GG!

Infiltrator is okay - Tech powers and Immunity. Arguably a bit more fun to play than the soldier because you don't rely purely on soaking up damage and shooting stuff.

Sentinel is okay - Biotics and tech powers. Considering that biotics >>> tech, this class is imho inferiour to the Vanguard, but if you like Throwing around people AND poisoning them (you sadistic bastard!) then this is your thing.

Character/skill builds are straight forward linear point allocation. If you don't want to experiment too much and end up with subpar builds or otherwise with skills you don't like as much, check this out. It lets you calculate skills/builds (it doesn't attribute the pre-set skill points each class starts with though, also keep in mind that you get free skill points at meeting various morality levels, so don't spend too much points into the Charming/Intimidation skills early on).

You will NOT hit max level on your first playthrough. Neither on your second new Game+ for that matter iirc (then again, ingame console, brb).

If you want to know if you missed anything here's a .pdf with a checklist for all quests (contains location/mission trigger spoilers!!!):

Spoiler

Lastly, have fun, talk with people.

If you feel inclined to quit, remember that the second game is worth the grind.

If you feel like playing the second game might give you hope, know that said hope is snuffed out like a guilty flame by the third movie.

I know absolutely nothing about this game other then its a RPG/shooter

OP... if I could go back in time and take back one series, of the countless games and series I'd played over the years? It would be the Mass Effect trilogy. In a heartbeat. Just my own personal viewpoint on things.

Played the first mission. Lets see Nihlus dies, a crewman dies, my objective was destroyed, the council seems pissed and a mean guy seems highly motivated to kill me. One helluva day!
