Elevators are handy though as you can get news reports that can notify you of side missions (you can still do the side mission if you happen upon the planet but the elevator reports can help with the exact locations)  there is also some interesting dialogue between squad members that gives you a little more into there characters.

 

Also I would avoid buying weapons and armour in the first few parts of the game as it can get replaced rather quickly from loot drops.

 

One more piece of advice: when you get the Mako you actually get more experience killing enemies on foot then in the Mako.  So you can wear enemies down with the Mako but be sure to get out and finish them off with your standard weapons for the higher EXP.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I decided to put my playthrough off for a while till I finish DA:I. I seem to really like ME1 but was having a hard time absorbing all the chatter and dialogue. I have very bad memory and I really enjoy the story and lore of video games. I know most people probably won't understand because they can juggle 5 or 10 games easily but I'm challenged in the memory department and there seems to be tons of lore and people to talk to. So thanks again everyone I have a feeling the game will be epic when I finally get to it.

When I heard RPG/Shooter I was thinking it was going to be like borderlands but It seems like more of a RPG with shooter gameplay where bl was the other way around.
