I just came across this article. I thought it might make for an interesting conversation on here. I didn't believe it when I first heard about it. My personal point of view is that video games and whatever else people do should be totally separate from school. I know on Grand Theft Auto it says rated mature. No one calls the police if a kid plays it.

The rated mature is suggested. I don't think anything illegal if kids happen to play this game. It's not like they don't turn on the TV see more vulgar and in detail acts. Like the Walking Dead for example, the  last week. When that guy face was literally ripped apart. This all happens on TV.

I think the school should in no way trying to monitor the kids after school. This sorta reminds me when New York banned the 2 liter of mountain dew for a short time. They were doing something good for their cause. While the intentions may be innocent. I really think this is way over reach.  Kids see the stuff on TV all the time. Now their parents can get a call from child protective services and the police citing "neglect"

One: Who can monitor their kid 24/7. Short of installing cameras in every room.

Two: It's none of the school's business. Their injecting themselves into it by complaining to people over a video game. I mean really what is the world coming to.

You can read the entire article below. What do you think.

The irony of having police officers bust down doors, shut down video game systems, menace kids and people with actual guns and threats, thereby, traumatizing them, etc, in order to

protect

people from the violence of sitting down in front of a box and pressing buttons.

GTA does kind of suck and is pointless though in many ways.

Kids shouldn't be playing GTA. That we can all agree on.

However, as of late many, many school principals, officials, and districts have been massively overstepping their bounds and are frankly drunk on power - one only needs to examine the stories of gets getting suspended for pretend playing guns to get that impression. There was once case where a couple of kids who were playing airsoft on the lawn of their friend near the bus stop before then getting on the bus were suspended.

They're being busy bodies, and they need a hard lesson that they have exactly zero power outside the bounds of school property or school events.

The picture in that article isn't even from GTA, it's from 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand.

It would be hilarious if the principle had a kid who plays GTA.

Let's face it. Schools aren't an institution for learning anymore.
I fear for my little brothers education.

It might be worth mentioning that, like is said in the news post it isn't just GTA, any 18+ rated game counts. Here's another source.

And here's the letter.

"Dogs of War"? Huh?? Do they mean God of War or Gears of War or something? Anyway while kids really shouldn't be playing 18+ games, least of all GTA, I 100% agree with Baron on this one. Also over here (the UK) I'm pretty sure it's only illegal if the retailer actually sells the game directly to the kid.

I don't know where "over here" is for you, but in the US it's not illegal to sell an M-rated game to a kid. The ESRB ratings are guidelines, not rules.

Depends on the seller. Even at 18 Fredmeyer wouldn't sell me a game like "Star Ocean: till the end of time" without a parent present.

As an avid GTAO player, I'd love for less annoying little sh*ts to be on the game. You go, dude.

That's just company policy, so they can avoid bad press if the kid turns out to do something stupid or dangerous. And the rule is usually 17; I've never heard of someone withholding a sale to someone who was 18. Also, that game you mentioned is only rated T ( equivalent to a PEGI rating of 12+,  IIRC). What kind of store withholds a sale from an 18 year old on a T-rated game?

Sorry, should've elaborated. Over here as in England. Retailers can be fined if they knowingly sell mature rated games directly to minors I believe. This of course doesn't apply if someone older buys it for them.

The hell? I own that game. It's only a 12!

I was surprised myself. It wasn't anything close to a controversial title. I've always suspected the cashier maybe thought that it being a Japanese game equalled "adult" or something.

Parents are allowed to let their kids experience any sort of media or entertainment they deem acceptable.

If a parent buys their kid Grand Theft Auto, there is literally nothing the school can do about it. The police are going to just shrug and say "no one is breaking any laws here" and that will be the end of it.
