The Inquisitor is lucky, if you compare the Herald with the former DA main characters.
The Warden: if alive is in a mission to cure the Calling, if he/she doesn't succeed is doomed to die in some time, before becoming old in any case. The Warden's only potential companions for that quest come from DAA: Sigrun, Velana, Nathaniel and / or Oghren and I'm not sure about the drunken dwarf. The only LI that could be with the Warden for the whole quest is Zevran, though in some scenarios maybe Morrigan or Leliana could have some way to go after the Warden. Poor Warden Alistair has no likely scenario to go after his beloved Warden and a king shouldn't do it.
Hawke: he/she can be either dead or trapped in the fade with one of the most powerful demons there is, or else in a quest to Weisshaupt where there are rumours about conflicts or even war between the Wardens. If Hawke is travelling to the Anderfels, maybe, just maybe some of his/her former friends or LIs could be with the Champion of Kirkwall, and that's the best possibility for Hawke.
Meanwhile the Inquisitor enjoys the loneliness of power. Yeah, the Herald could lose his/her love relationship, if romanced Solas or Cassandra and they were ambiguous about the latter, and most of the members of the Inquisition are planning to leave, but we can think some of them can keep some kind of contact with the Inquisitor. Anyway there's a question about the fate of the Inquisitor quite related to this topic, how much time the Inquisition is going to last? Maybe the Inquisitor can follow his/her friends or LIs in a not so distant future, when the Inquisition is no longer needed.
*Spoilers*Does Anyone Feel Bad for the Inquisitor?

They stay for a short time (in game), but later in the story some bring in replacements, and then leave.
Clear this up for me, do the characters ever actually leave in game? And also where can I read this 'story' about what happens to the characters? Or could someone knowledgable summarise for each character?
+ what do you think will happen for any post game story DLC we might get in the future (hakkon wasn't exclusive post game), will it be before or after some characters leave? Thanks

Forever-alone Lavellan is pretty sad.

I figure the only companion who'd stay around for a while would be Cole. The rest have their own lives and good on them. She'll move on and find something else, supposing she doesn't find Solas and see what that was all about.

They don't actually leave during the game though if you talk to them some say they will stay a while before they move on...namely Iron Bull, Varric, and Vivienne. Of course Leliana or Cassandra will leave if one of them becomes the divine and Dorian said eventually he'll leave but his best and only friend is keeping him there a little longer.

The characters tell you where they are going to go, as I said they stay in game, but story wise they are going to leave. They say as much.

Leliana said she plans to leave if she was romanced by the Warden, as well.

I've only ever had Viviene as divine in my playthroughs, and I stopped her leaving immediately. Can you do the same for them? I might still need them for war table missions or party setups even after the game if they become divine.

(to esh1996) You can only delay them storywise to keep them post-gamewise, at least that was the case with Cassandra as a Divine who wanted my Inquisitor to make a reason for her to stay a little longer.

True and I forgot Cass says she will leave to rebuild the seekers so I guess they leave either way.

I can't decide if the image of the Inquisitor and Cole being the last ones hanging around Skyhold as everyone goes their seperate ways is heartbreaking or strangely endearing. :S

I don't think so, I've never had the option of keeping Leliana from leaving she only says she wont go for a while.
They won't leave while you are actually playing the game, post main story obviously so don't worry (unless a dlc comes out where they do leave). They are all still available (with one exception).

Bioware continued to screw over the Warden, and Hawke in this game as well, if the Warden romanced Morrigan, his "true love" losses her free will. If s/he was friends with, or romanced Alistair well, he gets left in the fade. Oh yes, and Hawke can get left in the fade. Bioware: "previous PCs are trash for us to throw into the fade, we also mind control their wives and kill their friends." XD
My Warden is still alive and out there looking for the 'cure', Alistair is still alive and still King, and my Hawke is still alive and back with Anders (OK, I head cannoned that last bit!). My Inquisitor will be with Cullen, I assume, as I still have the last quest to do. But I've always thought that Bioware has some kind of deep-seated disdain for 'happily ever after', especially after what they did in ME3. I don't understand why. It's as valid an ending as any other, and it seems that a significant number of their paying customers want it, so...

In DA, David Gaider was the one pushing for the bittersweet, though with him the order of it was more like sweetbitter. lol He said that he and Patrick talked about how they would make the Cassandra romance ending bittersweet, it came out as her becoming Divine and leaving. lol Why he did it, it's just the way he writes, why they did it in ME3,Hudson is a twitt.

My ex says it's cos some people are terrified of their game being regarded as 'girly' if they go for happily ever after. I still haven't worked out if he's joking or not! ![]()

Hah, so if I happened to romance Sera, the only other companion left, potentially, might be Cole? Fun times.

And then Lavellan will try to reminisce with Cole about Solas and Cole will say, "Who?" ![]()
