I have exactly one day to make a pretty big decision and I've exhausted all of my family and friends opinions so I thought I would ask for some unbiased opinions.

I was planning on going to Vienna this summer for a study abroad. It's six weeks and psychology (my major) based. I'd live in an apartment with anywhere from one to three other roommates. My family would come over around the end and then we'd have a small family vacation. I have to pay for most of this option.

Well, two days ago my family put another offer on the table. Don't go to Vienna this summer and they'll take me on a trip around the US and we'll all go to Europe for 15 days next summer. I don't have to pay for any (or very little) of this option.

The arguments in my head:

For not going:

I'm very shy when I first meet people so I don't want to be friendless while I'm over there.

I'm very close with my family and seeing as I'm a junior these will be my last two summers with them.

My grandfather lives right across the street from me and I go to lunch with him and my sister every Sunday. I'm very worried about...how long he'll still be here and I'd be devastated if something happened to him while I was over there and I didn't get to spend those last few weeks with him.

I'm taking classes in another country and if I fail...well I wasted a ton of money.

For going:

I'd love to live in European city and experience a new culture.

I get to play being a real adult for 6 weeks with my own apartment and buying my own food.

Without my family I get to adapt and fix my own problems.

During my downtime I can take weekend trips to Germany, Poland, Hungary, etc.

I would love any input from people that have studied abroad before. I'm so confused.

I voted you take take the Vienna trip cause I understand the being shy thing and also the being close to your family thing. It sounds like your family don't want you to grow up quit yet and let you go in that adulthood and that's not a bad thing because they love you so much but it can eventually make you even more shy as a person, sometimes parents doesn't realise that they are doing more harm by sheltering their children than good. I think it would be best to face your fears (your shyness) and go to Vienna, live by yourself and meet new people, see how amazing it is and get that wonderful experience out of it.

i would take US trip... buuut because i have many friends across the country. So for a casual journey i would take US.

But i am not a big fan of US educational system, so i would rather take EU for that purpose of study abroad.

So go Vienna.

Pshhhh. US, man, you gotta go.  We're all friendly as **** here.

Come on. It'll be fun! We can go shoot some guns, and then get hammered at a NASCAR race after church on Sunday.

I am guessing you are an English speaker, so shy or not as soon as you open your mouth you will have access to new associations like it or not.

It will not be your last 2 summers with them if you do not choose to make it so.

If something happen to your grandfather while you are gone will having been home make it less likely to have happened?

It is not just the classes in another country that you will be taking. There are vast differences in culture that you can experience especially if your major is psychology.

I am guessing you are American. Austria has a couple thousand years of history.

Being on your own away from your family may give you revelations good and or bad about yourself.

During your down time you may just fall in love with Austria as well.

I do not know which option you should take, but suggest that you not choose one over the other because you have any fears associated with the choice. Fear is the ultimate interruption to learning.

Education and degree are not necessarily mutually inclusive.

Both are great to visit.

Flip a coin. Leave it up to chance. See where it takes you.

I personally find traveling to somewhere new to be a great experience.

Different surroundings, people, food, etc. The more experiences you have, the more profound your personality and goals will become imo.

I voted US trip.  Being a 'real adult' is vastly overrated.

as well as UK.

Also I think it's not official, but many people here dislike Italy.

Go to Serbia. Get lost in woods. Never heard from again.

I forgot to say.

Austria were glorious until experimental artists and word playing philosophers of 1920s and 1930s ruined it. Then Communists took power...

Still good though...

Go visit Vienna. It's a beautiful city.

I'm saying this as a proud American too.
