All of your favorite extinct animals are lame, have some Helioprion!

It's like a shark, but with a chainsaw for a jaw.

Looks like an experimental failure.

Or it was designed for trolling!

New Species of Dragon-like Woodlizards Discovered in Andes

From Discovery News

Three new lizards that researchers describe as "dragon-esque" have just been discovered in the Andean cloud forests of Ecuador and Peru.

The woodlizards, which really do look like tiny dragons, are described in the latest issue of the journal ZooKeys.

"That more than half of the diversity of a group of large, dragon-looking reptiles from South America has been discovered in recent years should be heard by people in charge of conservation and funding agencies," lead author Omar Torres-Carvajal of Ecuador's Museo de Zoologia said in a press release.

The discoveries increase the known number of woodlizards to 15.

I took this picture of a Megalodon jaw at a museum where I did a public work event at. You can't really tell how big it is in this picture. But I have another pic where I'm standing right behind it and it makes me look like a Hobbit.

Edit: i've no idea how my picture disappeared.

I'll go with a couple of kinda gross ones. First, the antlion, which is a mostly unremarkable insect except for the fact that its larvae were the inspiration for the Ceti Eels from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Spoiler

Continuing with the theme of insects that inspired movies, next up is the tarantula hawk (also called pepsis wasp), whose method of reproduction inspired Ridley Scott's Alien. Fortunately, tarantula hawks target spiders, not mammals. The female tarantula hawk will paralyze a spider with its stinger and then implant its larva in the spider; after the larva pupates, it just pretty much busts its way out of there. Although not aggressive, the tarantula hawk is also known for its extraordinarily painful sting; the Schmidt Sting Pain Index ranks it just behind the bullet ant mentioned upthread.

I'm going to up the grotesqueness factor here for a bit: The screw worm fly (BTW, I strongly recommend not looking this up on google images) implants its eggs in the exposed flesh of mammals; the larvae pupate in there and burst out when they've reached adulthood. When the wound is scratched or irritated, the screw worm larvae corkscrew their way deeper into the flesh (thus the name).

Cochliomyia_hominivorax_%28Coquerel%2C_1

Fortunately, the fly was eliminated in the US and a few other nations by means of the sterile insect technique; basically, you capture a whole bunch of males and apply a small amount of radiation, which sterilizes them. Then you release these males into the general population; females mate with them and fail to reproduce, which means that the size of the next generation is significantly reduced. Because the fly life cycle is so short, it's possible to reduce or even eliminate a population of insects relatively quickly with this method.

Alright, that's enough gross stuff even for me, so I thought I'd conclude with a few images of Setsu-Chan, the adorable cat with the famously hideous sleeping face.

Giant Seafaring mammals give me the willies!

I can't help but imagine the Pinocchio scene where Monstro swallows Geppetto alive and I don't have an animated wooden puppet to come rescue me!

... Just a cute little dog that falls up the stairs everytime I take him outside.

A picture of you standing next to a hobbit would make you look like a hobbit Gizmo! <3
