What is the purple line on the character portrait that decreases in battle!?

Are you playing a mage? Is it a bluish/purple ring around the portrait. If so than that's the mage's mana, otherwise you might have a graphics problem because I don't recall purple lines in my play throughs

What is the purple line on the character portrait that decreases in battle!?

The purple bar is a character having a Barrier placed on them.  It is a spell that Mages have.  Think of it like a magic shield that absorbs some amount of damage before any damage starts cutting into your health bar.
