'llo there guys!

I'm creating a NWN2 version of the Triadic Knight from the Champions of Valor book. While I do not have any technical questions so far, I'd look for design recommendations (i.e. balance). For those of you who do not own the book I'll quickly share the details:

Reqs:

Alignment: LG

Deity: Triad (any)

Feats: Endurance, Initiate of the Triad (any)

Skills: Several knowledge skills to a total of 10, while the highest is 4

Special: Aura of good class feature

It features seven levels along with full bab, fighter's saves and hd and 5/7 divine spellcasting (losing on 1 and 7).

1: Aura of Good, special mount

2: Immunity to disease

3: Shield other/1 day

4: Immunity to daze and blind

5: Discern Lies, Smite Evil 1/day

6: Immunity to fear

7: Shout 1/day, Triple smite (triple damage on smiting, while consuming three of it's daily uses)

Now I'm tweaking this to a class with 5 levels to circumvent the implementation of non-standard mechanics. My idea:

Req:

Alignment: LG

Deity: Triad (any)

Feats: Toughness, Extra Smite

Skills: 8 Lore

Special: Smite ability

Only paladins, clerics with domain: destruction and divine champions can fullfil this reqs. Spellcasting is advanced on level 2,3 and 4.

1: Immunity to fear

2: Immunity to disease

3: Shield other/1 day

4: Immunity to daze and blind

5:Smite Evil 1/day, Triple smite, Shout 1/day

With the extra smite-prequisite I assure that the player has enough uses of smite to use the Triple smite ability at least once a day.

I'm still not fully convinced about this make-up. Does it sound like a prestigeclass you would consider if playing an appropriate character?

While I think it's a highly beneficial option for any kind of fighter/divine champion and a decent one for a cleric I'm a bit in doubt about the paladin (as he already has immunity to fear and disease). I consider giving an additional use of Smite at first level. Any thoughts?

I'd at least add the shout back in since you're taking away turn undead progression.

Alright, this one is in for sure. I wonder how this slipped my mind.

If I'm a paladin, why would I take this other than for rp reasons? A paladin will have immunity to disease and fear from their paladin levels before they can take this prestige class. It shares some similarities with the NW Nine class. The NW Nine's level 2 ability of Guarding the Lord is Shield Other 3xday, and Triple Smite versus the Nines All Out Assault seems like a relative wash. My guess is a paladin would be more likely to take the Nine as a prestige class.

A fighter/divine champion might like this class for the fear/disease, but I'd think that path would max out the divine champion first because of the bonus they get to all saves.

The Special Mount might be interesting if it was an animal companion of some sorts instead of a mount , though that wouldn't be really in line with the class lore, it would seem like animal companion would be almost another class. A dog maybe?, the stock options for animal companions like giant spiders don't seem to fit well, and then given some bonus feat selection options like Natural Bond.

Thanks for the insight. Compared to the NW9 this class grants a better HD and divine spellprogression at the cost of worse skill selection. I can see the overall similarity though. My initial thought was to cut the special mount as it's basically a not implented paladin classfeature as well as the discern lies ability and thus reduce this 7 level class to a 5 level one. As you mentioned correctly the stock animal companions do not really fit the theme as well. So I would rather focus on the smiting ability. I figured out I would give an additional use of smite at first level. This way you only lose on turn undead attempts, lay on hands and cure sickness. Yep, I think that's the way to go for me. And I would not underestimate the triple smite. I would call it some sort of Dragonkiller ability. I even see some problems with it as soon as Greater Smite gets involved...(if I'm counting correctly this could dish out some 900 damage on a non-critical hit theoretically...that would make any boss without special resistances obsolete.)
