Wanted to start a new topic, rather than bring back an old dead one...

So here's my thing.  I'm low on promotions (currently like 1/1/2), so I'm just trying to get an always mustered level 20 keeper going for Threatening matches.  All the normal barrier stuff is a given, static cage upgraded, frost step...  But I hate chain lightning.  It's just so boring.  I was thinking of swapping it out for barrage, but is that a worthwhile use of a point?

Current gear -

Superb Health Belt

Enhanced Willpower Amulet

Some crap rings (like, 2% attack and 5% crit chance)

Fury or Pyre, fully kitted out with HoK and Superb Spirit runes.

Any and all suggestions welcome.

Chain Lightning at worst screws the aggro management. Barrage is a nice single target nuke for occasions where you need to down the boss, or a stray enemy passes through the front lines.

Not saying Barrage is the best pick, just that it's better than CL. Fade Cloak might be nice too. Provides some defense as well as some damage.

You're overgeared for threatening. Jump into perilous. Here's a whole list of builds, keeper included. Click on the link.

Barrage is better than chain lightning!!? I call shenanigans.

You can veilstrike peeps in the static cage to put them to sleep (right?).

Haven't keepered in a while, but I used to run barrier, static cage, disruption field and fade cloak. Worked like a charm on threatening with far worse gear than yours, and worked on occasion in perilous pugs, but that's mainly because I'm not the greatest player. My failure rate on perilous was no worse than any other kit.

Fade cloak is awesome, I've taken it on all my mages except the ele since I started playing MP. Disruption field is fun for blocking off spots, since the idiot AI melee characters always run into it. Also does funny things to projectiles.

I never really got much mileage out of EB, not sure what more knowledgeable people would say though.

I'm concerned the other perilous pug players will make fun of my terrible lack of experience. But I do like that link.

Well, for Threatening or Perilous.  Chain Lightning + Barrier are a most.... Cause they are wasted points already, but still useful.  Aim for Static Cage and Energy Barrage = For more Damage.

If you are more of a Support, then get Fade Step/Disruption Field. Both are very good for a support keeper.

Support Passives = normally you'd want to take all passives in the main line in Protection.  [Till Strenght of Spirit + Guardian Spirit and Knight protector]. Then take the Passives in Primal Spirit [ Conductive Current + Clean Burn + Disturbance of Spirit + Restorative Veil ]

For more damage, You have to take all Rift mage Passives + Pyre of the Forgotten staff (Fire Staves are the best for weakened damages). You will want Some Barrier passives too.

Fade cloak instead of frost step? My concern with that is getting out of the way of bosses, but if its a viable switch I'm definitely down for it.

I'll address some of the things you said and then link two keeper builds with a lot of information, some of which may answer questions you have about keeper.

Level 20 keeper: Because you have two of the best staves in the game, you should be able to do threatening runs well as a level 2+ keeper, so there is really no need to stay as a level 20 when doing it. Playing as a level 20 even in perilous is uncommon, and definitely unnecessary for a keeper. Keeper is a great class for low promotion players because their key abilities have components not dependent upon attributes.

Barrier: Whatever you do, and no matter how confusing things get, always cast barrier on yourself, even 5-20 seconds before a fight (to benefit from increase mana regeneration and/or mana surge). Time recasting so that a few seconds before barrier becomes available, you are close to at least one other teammate, so that you can barrier two or more people at once for more barrier cooldown from the Elegant Defense upgrade.

Frost step: This is decent on the keeper, but a few disadvantages to keep in mind. 1. It breaks winter stillness, which is a very good passive if you can stand still a lot. 2. You usually don't want to be focusing on damaging enemies by running through them, you want to focus on where teammates are and standing near them to barrier them. 3. Fade step (no frost step upgrade) will allow you to be speedy, and optimize use of winter stillness passive by standing still longer and then sprinting with fade step to get close to teammates to barrier, and imo can be better than getting the frost step upgrade as the keeper shouldn't be focusing on DPS.

Static cage: This does double the stated weapon damage when enemies within it are struck by basic attacks because the runes are counted separate. The enhanced static cage ring increases duration by 70% instead of 30% and should always be slotted on a keeper if you have it.

Chain lightning: The damage is good, the cooldown is fast, it staggers enemies, it reveals stealthy enemies, and it can proc static cage damage and clean burn many times. This is where you dump excess mana when barrier and static cage are in cooldown. It may be boring to you, but keep in mind, if you decide to replace it with something, you will have a wasted ability point. IMO, barrage/lightning bolt are very very bad options vs. chain lightning.

I used the more crowd control builds with my Keeper until I got better gear and more promotions.  The Keeper's crowd control can be pretty sick.  Nowadays, my Keeper is strong enough to hold her own in Threatening/Perilous so I play more aggressively.  Still try to Barrier as many as I can though ;)

Veramis plays a pretty mean Keeper so his suggestions are pretty good.

Personally, I prefer this build lately: http://da-skills.net...00100,010,110,0

It consists of Mind Blast, Chain Lightning, Static Cage and Barrier.

The strategy is get up close and personal, it's the key element for this build to reach its full potential. Follow a melee character in the middle of the mob. Just before getting too close, cast Barrier on you and anyone close to you. Cast Static Cage then alternate between Mind Blast and Chain Lightning, casting Barrier when you see your teammates run out of the good stuff... Always be aware of when Barrier becomes available so you can cast it whenever you need it.

The thing is, Static Cage and Barrier will eat much of you mana. Getting up close and personal will minimize your movement which is perfect for Winter Stillness, and also perfect for Mind Blast. Mind Blast will accomplish 3 big roles. First, it will stagger all enemies near you, giving you more leeway. Second, it will replenish your Barrier which means you don't have to constantly cast Barrier unless it's really needed. Third, it detonates a basic combo with Static Cage which deals a moderate amount of damage.

As a last advice, only use Chain Lightning when you have the mana and time to do so. The 3 other spells are much more important to keeping you alive and helping your teammates to do the same.

This build is surprisingly efficient even in Perilous. A lot of people are shocked to see a Keeper getting so close to the mob and stay there. It's really not the "usual" role it plays in a battle, but I find it very fun to play.

I was thinking more like Chain Lightning for Fade Cloak or Barrage.

I see the opinions vary on CL. On my opinion it's mana costly and might pull some unwanted attention to you. Personally when I'm keepering I usually take just about anything in its place, Mind Blast, Fade Cloak, Frost Step, anything.

For AW though CL is wonderful. Also note I suck at Keepering so my opinion is less trustworthy than others'.

You mean the masses and masses of pug players that don't talk at all? Usually if they talk, they want to coordinate, and it is a good time . . . most of the time pugs are silent and it is not so fun. If you're on origin, feel free to add and message me for games.

PS Destruction field is my current favorite among the bunch

I've had three kinds of peeps on mic:

1) Me. Rambling about the weather, commenting stuff, trying to coordinate, occasionally playing music bots for the mood (short ones), whatever that comes to mind. Often times people won't run too many rounds with me when I'm on mic, even though the runs are going splendidly. They could just mute me.

2) Lobby/game with people who talk to each other in language I don't understand. So far these have been French and Italian.

3) People who speak English. I've managed to actually have a conversation with few of these. Problem with them is their girlfriend/roommate/sister/mother is around and they start to argue, often in their native language I don't understand. Most of the time they forget to turn their mic off when arguing.

Just wondering where are the peeps with mics who both talk and don't have anyone to ruin their gaming sessions. To prevent this on my part I only use mic when my wife is not around.
