What's the point of armour schematics?

When every armour variant looks pretty much exactly the same on the companions, it really defeats the purpose of spending the money, or hunting down the schematics for the armour sets....

I went to Hissing Wastes to spend the 3k for the battlemaster armour for Cassandra/Iron Bull/Blackwall. Seriously disappointed to see it looked actually worse than the lower rank armour set (I mean seriously, heavier armour should look, well, heavier)

Why give us different armour schematics for the npc companions if the developers were too lazy to actually employ some graphic designers to design different looking armour sets!

Meh! Great game otherwise, but this aspect gets worse with every new Dragon Age game.

i love the schematics! however, i would have preferred them to organize crafting differently. i dont like having to balance aesthetic vs performance. i would prefer armour rating to be based on apprentice-master-refined quality, and let us decide the appearance.

my warrior IQ has armour thats weak, but i really like the way it looks, so i'm muddling through ;) i would prefer to not have to muddle!

I'm not so worried as to what it looks like. I'm more concerned about the stats I can create so for me crafting higher cold resist or fire resist for example is more important than looking good.

So I suppose the point is to craft armour with different and better stats and effects.

Don't get me wrong - I very much appreciate the ability to craft armour with cold/fire/electricity resists, especially for dragon encounters.

But, does it all have to look (almost) exactly the same. Really??

That other game, in a cold harsh environment, allowed me to craft really unique pieces for how I liked to have my team look (not predetermined by some team in Alberta, Canada)

I like to craft and spend way too much time doing it, and I think time to fiddle is definitely required if you want to have something that does exactly what you want and looks decent too.  There are a lot of limitations in crafting armor.  I'll never make Inq a set of armor that looks exactly like Viv's, even though the same schematic could be used for both.  Each of the standard armors per tier has 3 variations.  For Inq and most companions, armor built on one schematic may appeal more.  For instance, I never dress Varric in anything other than the upgraded prowler suit from the Hidden Wastes merchant, but think it looks meh on Cole.  One of the other tier 3 rogue sets looks really horrid on Varric.  Some of the companions don't seem to have much variation, like Solas.  You can get some great variation with others, especially Bull, Sera, and Varric.  Adding arms and legs into the mix changes the silhouette a lot too, but again, not all armors change for all companions.  I never cared what materials looked like on different companions until I swapped a set I'd made for a mage Inq onto someone else and all of a sudden the trivial little clash I hadn't noticed was glaring, but it WAS my second-best armor.  I spent most of Act 2 mentally apologizing to Dorian.  The tinting table rocks.

You can also get different effects and still get a look you can live with, by altering which schematic, or combination of armor and other kit, you use.  Armor comes with slots for utility and defense and different material sources for each.  There are crossover materials that allow cross-class or cross-source flexibility, too.  I love plugging dragon stuff in for resistances.  Even some of the slotless schematics give you room there.

What other game in a cold harsh environment? If it is the one I think you are referencing it did not have a team and the look of the item was still dependent on the material used.

Crafting in that game (Sk.....) is quite more advanced than what DA:I has, so difficult to really compare. But there are tiers, and you need to get your crafting ability high enough to even make one of the, say dragon armour, items.

That being said, elven armour looked the same on all characters, as does all other armour sets. I'm not a fan of the new Dragon Age thing where the developers decide how the characters 'should' look (based on their creative vision I guess), and then making all the armour sets conform to that vision, rather than allowing the player to choose how we want our character to look.

If everyone had a cool look, like Varric or Vivian, that might have worked well, but unfortunately some look like Diorrian does (neo-Greco look I guess), or Cole (Arabic pajama pants), etc.

I agree that visual variety in our armors is SEVERELY lacking. But I do love having schematics as it means we get to craft our armors with the materials, strength, perks, and colors we want.

While you can't do much about the looks of the chest piece, the available arms and legs pieces can make a set of armor look better. Experiment a bit, maybe you'll find something that's a bit of an improvement.

That said, I'm not fond of the fact that armor/mail/coat looks keep repeating themselves.

What's the point of having any armour? Or any weapons? Seriously I don't get it. What's the point of doing anything or having anything?

Agreed. All earthly possessions are fleeting and futile. Desire for such things only leads to suffering. Only by following the Noble Eighthfold Path may we seek release from the eternal pain of existence.
