Taking back 2da reserved ranges

If you look at the 2da ranges for reservations, there are a lot of ranges that are reserved for content that was never released, or was released but the author is long gone and the content does not use near the full reserved range. For instance there are ten class.2da spots reserved for someone's never released psionics classes, and fifty reserved spots for a pack that has only ten or so classes and was last updated in 2009. Some 2das like classes and vfx_persistent are hard capped in size (classes is capped at 256).

 

So I ask, should we remove reservations for content that was never released/never used?

I've got a few ranges reserved that I haven't used yet, but I plan to. Other than situations like that I'd say yes.

 

A proper implementation of the psionics classes would have been good though....

Ok, how would we figure out what to prune? Your ranges would be presumably safe since you are currently active in the community even if the particular content you may have reserved for is not yet released.

Also, the wiki links that point to old vault should get pointed to the content on new vault.

The wiki site maintains a history (under the edit menu), so you can look back, say, five years and see what was reserved then.

I would say any reserved 2da ranges by RWS that have not been used you can reclaim.

If someone is still active in the community, leave the 2da ranges for them alone.

Ok, I've started. I pulled back the Sunshine's Psionics class range, since it was never released and the note was from 2010. Looking at the ranges for joshuakalis and ladydesire, I need to see how many of those were actually implemented, their classes.2da includes class names in the reserved lines, but the release notes don't indicate near that number of classes.

 

The various tile 2das should be good, since I sorted all those out for the tileset package.

ok, I've made a start. A lot of pointing things to new Vault from old Vault, some finding things that didn't previously have a link to the content, a bit of recalling never released and not gonna happen anytime soon reservations.

Don't play with placeables please. It's a worthy thing to do but I have used placeables to track down content. I think I have it all and I can do the same exercise at some future date. I am wondering why though? A 2da can be a big as you like, the file size is small. Why not just leave be and add new lines to the existing.

 

I liken it to my wife. She hates me tidying up because I just throw stuff away she had been keeping for a "special purpose".

For classes at least, I think the range is restricted to 8 bits. Likewise, the skills may be limited to 100.

Indeed. Several 2das are limited in size. Most notably classes. Every class line was reserved.

And most of the content with reserved ranges did not link to the content, or linked to the dead vault, so it may as well have not existed. That's mostly what I have been fixing, links.

If you find a busted link I will fix it in the spreadsheet in the cornucopia as well.

Corrected a lot of old vault links to new vault, and updates a lot of projects that had no links with links to the project on new vault.  Pain's DungeonEternal PW website seems defunct. :(
