Another spirit, but one unlike Cole.
Maybe something more along the lines of the Grand Oak from Dragon Age: Origins. Have it be a spirit that has possessed and animated an object that is normally inanimate, like one of those Andrastian statues for instance, and with a personality as amusingly strange as the Grand Oak. (without the rhyming)

Whatever happened to those Dryads that were mentioned in the Dragon Age books? Seems like an odd thing to mention and that not use, I mean, theyve never even been mentioned in game, and theyre supposed to live in Orlais.

Instead of a dog companion, what about a giant toad?
We could call it a battletoad.

Get out.
Do you want to ride a toadie?
But seriously,
I've got a better idea.
It's called mount your friends. You can mount any party member and any mount can be a party member so you can mount mounts that mount your friends with a battletoad at your side!

The most special companion in DA:A was Sigrun. The most special in DA2 was either Merril or Varric (while Isabella and Aveline had some great dialogue with each other, I didn't like them nearly as much).
No companion in DA:I is particularly special. The closest is probably Dagda.

Special seems to pertain more to the supernatural nature of the character, which is what we had in Wynne and Justice, and later Anders and Cole, though Wynne is arguably the least of the lot since we only see the spirit of faith do something once in the entire game.
I guess Shale kinda deserves a mention.

The mention of Dryads in this thread and Serault in another...now has he me thinking that The Horned Knight would be an interesting companion.
The only issue is that there would have to be a reason why The Horned Knight is no longer lord of the forest, and travelling with a band of adventurers.

How about a rather twitchy mage who got a little ambitious with an experiment and now has multiple spirits in their heads. Like taking Ander's relationship with Justice and putting it on steroids, a person who you have no idea who you're really talking to

Oh, I love this! It was kinda a silly thing, but playing Last Court got me really excited for DAI and I was hoping to see a bit more of Serault in game. Perhaps we wouldn't get the Horned Knight, but someone from his court could be interesting and give us a chance to see something cool and new.

Why not Sandal? Sandal can fight oddly well, it seems and he was not with the Inquisition. Actually, I find it strange that so many characters like Sandal wasn't with the Inquisition. Perhaps that's because they'll be with the next game's protagonist? Master Wade, Sandal, Bodahn, those two dwarfs from DAO Awakening who are borthers, one builds perfect walls and the other makes bombs from Qunari powder. Master Wade is clearly the most talented blacksmith on Thedas, the man forged a legendary sword: Vigilance. Not even mentioning Dragon Bone/Scale armor. Sandal is as talented with enchantments as he is weird, this means he's infinitely talented
Those two dwarf bros from Awakening seemed very talented as well, the walls stood against even ogres and the rocks they threw for a long time and his bro figured out how to make bombs like Qunari. I wouldn't be surprised to see them in Weisshaupt, working for Wardens like Dagna and Harrit working for Inquisition.

I want the Quizquisition guy as companion (my demisexual romance option, a pity he isn't a girl).
A talking nug with mage powers..
And romance option. (Kidding!)
Are you sure about that?

He can't be a companion. He's a raper.
Ehm, sorry, I meant Reaper.
