I had an idea of using either a bladed staff or non-bladed staff and book. The bladed staff is faster and has a skill tree for more combat orientated abilities where as the staff w/ book is slower but causes some area of effect damage and has a skill tree with some buffs like spell wisp

-D-

I'd love to get a proper spear, but like an enchanted spear or something. You could essentially have the staff, but it's a stabby stabby make enemies into mookabobs affair.

I like the gauntlet idea. Especially if you consider the next game might be going north, and the fact that from what we see in DA2, saarabas don't use staves, or any other weapon. Ketojan just bust out a spell right there, and all of the other saarabas point and shoot. So I'm thinking, why not (since there was hardly any Qunari love this game) let that be a major feature of qunari mages next game? They could go ATLA bending melee style!

Make that lyrium armor please, a bit like a medieval version of TRON armor.

Have you ever read the "Sword of Truth" series by T. Goodkind? Or seen the *coughs, whispers* TV series "The Seeker" *coughs some more* 'based' on it? Your idea immediately made me think of Agiels, leather rods about a foot in length that helped a certain group of women ("Mord-Sith") completely neutralise and capture enemy mages (and to dish out pain by the bucket). Would be cool. Unfortunately, the spot of anti-mage is kinda taken by the Templars. But who's to say that Mages would not set up their own (possibly secret) "mage police" with specific anti-magic capabilities. In fact, I'd be surprised if they hadn't.

Anyway, this thread is win, so many good ideas.

Aw I liked the tv show it was Merlin-ish cheesy fun, I take it the show wasn't well received?

Someone on BW writing staff has a fan though Seekers of Truth can't be a coincidence.

I was replaying Skyrim the other day and I'd forgotten how much I love bound weapons and offensive restoration spells.

I would love if we could use Tomes. Can make my mages like the ones from the Fire Emblem franchise.

I forgot to add to the OP that I *hate* when my Magequisitor sits down during cutscenes with his staff on his back.

I think so too!

And I don't know how "it was received" -- I just know that I didn't particularly like it... for the cheesy fun, it felt too much like Xena to me. The books have much more substance, are more emotional and darker than the TV shows -- in fact, they (books 1-6 at least, the series went steeply downhill after that IMO) belong to my most beloved treasures. They do have humour, but it's far more subtle and sparingly used, so the effect is greater.

Yeah I'm not a fan. I would rather the staff simply not appear in the cutscene if they're not going to have animation of him/her removing it and putting it aside or something, which does occasionally happen with weapons in general anyway.

KoA was a good game, especially combat. It was simple, but still engaging. It had a combat system the Fable series wished it had.

Bare hands. Mages should be able to cast without staffs. Just like in Origins.

For future DA games, can you add alternate weapons for mages? I know the staff is the traditional mage weapon, but how about something different?

Some of the enemy mages use books. You could make it that staves are more single-enemy weapons while books are for multiple enemies. Or something of the sort. I'm just tired of the mage staff cliché and would love some variations.

What? Nothing about the stupid staff animations?

Besides, your'e asking for additional complexities, which new console gamers abhorr. Remember what  Electronic Arts Chief Creative Officer Richard Hilleman said ".."Our games are actually still too hard to learn," ........ "The average player probably spends two hours to learn how to play the most basic game."

Sadly, Sarotz, I believe that you are spot-on. It's a shame really. =(

Well, your mage still technically casts from his/her hands; you just can't unequip the staff. In any case, doesn't this actually result in a sort of penalty in combat in Origins, since the staff basically allows you to keep dealing some sort of damage even when you temporarily can't use your spells?

I think it had some penalty, not much though. I would still prefer such option over the forced staff holding.

Yeah, it was and had even greater potential. A shame the company went under soon after it was released. :(

Some of the best combat mechanics in a RPG i've ever played, sadly the game wasn't popular and devs over spent.

I want to throw my vote in for being able to use a book and a staff during combat like the venatori mages could. The first time I saw them use that I was so excited to get my hands on that book and start muttering utter nonsense under my breath as I cast down thunder from the heavens as though I was the extension of Andraste herself.

...Only to realise in the end that my character was illiterate. That or he didn't learn the correct pronunciation of witch craft and wizardry spell 101: Wingardium Leviosa

While I normally prefer the traditional staff for my mages, it could be fun to play a mage who doesn't have a weapon, but instead uses a floating spellbook to strengthen his/her power :wizard:

I support the addition of books only if melee ability for mages returns as well. Let's see that animation of the Inquisitor clobbering somebody over the head with an ancient tome.

Yes! And the inquisitor should get Wynne's voice, exclaiming: 'Young boy/girl, you really should do... your... homework!'

I also vote for chakrams. Also, staffs with blades like the staff of Parlathan. Mages should be more melee like da2 Hawke. Mages who can use swords e.g. Arcane warriors, I'd like to see a return. Also bring back flaming/frost weapons magic spells.

In DA:O the wizard wasn't restricted to staves, they just had to meet the requirements for strength or dexterity based on the weapon they wanted to use. Alternatively if you chose the Arcane Warrior (the real Arcane Warrior, not that creeple from Multi-player) you could use your magic stat in place of strength for weapons and armor at the very least.

If you're looking most of the guys with the book also have a staff on their person somewhere.
