Yes, I suppose not being able to side with Sarevok, Amelissan, Irenicus, The Enclave, The Transcendant One, Malak, Sun Li, The Archdemon, and Jacques de Aldersberg in their respective games (among many others) means those games are poor RPGs with no real freedom of choice.

Alternatively, Corypheus makes it perfectly clear he's out to kill you with his very first appearance and siding with him would be extraordinarily stupid.

No we shouldn't. This would be completely out of character.

Well in the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion you could side with the Mythic Dawn and complete a human sacrifice and get accepted into the cult, however the main quest promptly and consequentially ends there.

It takes a special kind of character to instantly get down on his/her knees and swear loyalty to some crazy monster that has just sent a legion of other monsters or evil wizards to kill the whole lot of them. The only way such a character should end should be a swift death.

2 words...

Jade Empire.

or many words:

Knights of the old Republic.

or super long list of words:

Forgotten Realms - Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal.

Back then bioware used to give you options to go full Satan mode or full hero mode.

Only problem is, how would the Inquisitor know how to do this? I assume that those ancient magisters spent a lot of time screwing around with their hocus pocus to get up there, just to get thrown out as masters of the taint.

There is no true 'freedom' in any RPG setting, table or digital.  To maintain story cohesion, certain aspects of the story must be enforced.  Let me break it down a bit...

First, you'd have totally DIFFERENT set of companions.

Cassandra would turn on you.  Solas, Varric...okay NAME a companion that would stick with you.  Name a part of the Inquisition that would stay?  Cullen?  Leliana?  Harding?  NO ONE would stay.  You've become a VILLAIN.  So, you'd basically be a lackey.  This might work for a DLC like Darkspawn, but in the story?  Main game?  Yeah, probably not.

Second, mission structure.  All of the missions would change.  Adamant?  You'd be defending against a siege, and trying to release a Fear Demon.  Killing an Empress in Orlais.  Destroying the Inquisition at Haven.  To what end?  A slave to the Elder One?  Or to raise yourself as successor to the Golden Throne?  Or, would you turn on everyone at the last second to take power for yourself?  That still presents a WHOLE lotta logistical problems.

Thrid...writing it.  This would require a MASSIVE overhaul of the story.  New story branches, changes to character...and oh yeah, how to add this new evil overlord world state into the next game?  Something so radically different from the others that it would UTTERLY alter,,,no, it would actually require an ENTIRELY different game to work?  The world at the end of DAI is one of relative peace and stability.  Joining the Elder One or BECOMING him would leave the world a barren, red lyrium filled wasteland populated by the dying or the Darkspawn.  Demons everywhere.

Sometimes you have to make certain sacrifices for story cohesion.  NOT becoming Super Hitler was probably a good call on their part.

Sounds like any typical coward turncoat. They get picked up, pumped of usefulness, then thrown aside. Why can't that happen to a protagonist?

Also, that question was a dig at the implication that the Inquisitor has "character".

I imagine the souls of 1,000 mages a day should be enough to get it working.

Have them DLC it then.  Like Darkspawn Chronicles.  However, to do so in the main game requires a massive amount of work, with little chance of proving to be enjoyable for the mass audience.  At the end of most stories, no matter the decisions that are made, most gamers/readers/players want to be the hero.  Being the bad guy, while potential amusing, would not gain mass adulation, nor cater towards gaining a greater market share.  As they say, you can't please all of the people all of the time...

"Gamers/readers/players"
You basically said gamers twice, and readers aren't like that at all. There TONS of stories from the villains perspective, where in games developers rarely give us the chance.

>Series of moments from a historical age
>isn't the right franchise for villain protag
Why? It could be anyone at any point in history(in the dragon age).

People like evil options, but the key word here is options. Frankly, I am certain that such a game would do poorly. For all the talk about wanting to be a total evil pr*ck in games, plenty of people want to be able to play the hero. So in this hypothetical villain story, what's to stop people from wanting to save someone and why would the option not exist? This ain't grand theft auto, and even then we can just target the other scumbags in the game world.

This really only works for little diversions like the Darkspawn Chronicles, but I see little value in it for a full length game, at least not without the option to take the alternate path. It's just a matter of how feasible it is to make a game with the length we're used to while allowing a big branch in the plot.

Really?  I was intending to maintain the difference some feel exists between video games and table top.  Eh, trivialities.  Anyway, while there is a great deal of media, selling it in video game for is far more difficult.  Sure, there has been success with GTA, but even as far as this field has come, it still stands on somewhat shaky ground. India banned it, right?  You put a game out there that allows you to commit full on genocide with a title like Dragon Age, it might not sell.  Also, remember that the publisher gets their say too.  Stockholders and investors are not going to support a game that allows you to go full evil...not in a mass market game like Dragon Age.  Fun is great, but investors don't do it for the 'art'.  They do it for the money.  A smaller indie title maybe, or a game that was marketed specifically as 'go evil, take over the world, butcher innocents, rape/pillage/plunder' might sell, but on a console?  It's a hard sell.  Possible?  Sure, but for Sony and even Microsoft, you can understand why they'd balk at the premise.  Stockholders would probably shut that down instantly.  EA would laugh and then say 'No games about us, got it?'

I will admit, the concept can be appealing in the vein of having a greater amount of choice, but also I see that in doing so it has to be balanced with consequences for your actions.  Going full on Lord of Evil will mean that you probably get taken out end game by a REAL hero.

Still, I don't know...personally?  I wouldn't want to put in an additional two years of work, missing events with my family, and loved ones so someone could trap children in buildings and burn them down just in the name of 'fun'.

I guess I could kind of see this being a choice if this were the last game in the series or your decisions weren't going to be imported into the next game.  Otherwise wouldn't being "evil" or siding with Corypheus make the next game totally different and because of that they wouldn't just be able to toggle different world-states?  I mean if we sided with Corypheus I would imagine everyone of our current allies/party members would be dead since we would have to hunt them down and kill them.  That would mean killing Hawke, Morrigan, Leliana, Cullen, basically every major character that appeared in this game.  That would make the next game totally different than any of the current possibilities.  I don't think it would be feasible to do that.

I remember a guy called Saphra Deden in the old forum wanted for humanity become a reaper or to ally with the reapers. He was Dean-The-Young levels of tiresome. Don't be him.

Edit: Damn just noticed all those icons beneath the avatar. They need to be smaller, forum people! How do I make them smaller!
