Just wondering if it's better to finish the main quest first.

IIRC the DLC for Dragon Age 2 was aware of your progress in the main game, so is it the same for DA 3?

This isn't my first play through of the main quest. Just please don't spoil the DLC!

Thanks!

I've heard some things do change depending if you play pre or post ending, comments on main game progress and such. I have only played once, just before the final quest so I am not sure exactly what changes they would be.

I am a PS4er, but I've heard that there are quite alot of comments regarding the defeat of Coryfish,

I did it post-campaign, and as mentioned there are some comments about defeating Corypheus. Personally I liked doing it post-campaign, a standalone venture like Hakkon feels like it's something the Inquisition would investigate after the dust has settled.

That being said, there's no major difference or anything.

I guess you can choose between:
- playing it after the final mission where you can hear convos on defeated Coryfish, but no Solas... (He always has interesting things to say).
- or before final mission where you can play through with Solas but sacrifice the convos on defeating Coryfitits.

Personally it makes more sense to waste time after defeating the big bad to search for a 'special dragon', but then again Solas' comments on the lore are probably more interesting than the actual DLC plot. I haven't played the DLC (as a Pc gamer I'm doing a personal boycott of all time exclusive content until it's available to everyone, encouraging the boycott on the forum has earned me my first and only warning point so to be clear I'm not encouraging it, only explaining why I haven't played it yet) andI'm just basing my above comments on what I've heard.

Waiting till May, yeah. I personally would like to start this DLC before the main campaign finishes. I hate the quality of the game after the game is finished. It feels rushed and sloppy, and squad mates are dull at best. Can't even make out with your L.I. anymore! So it ain't that good, innit? But then starting it post-campaign would still make sense to the story.

Thanks for all of your replies! I guess I'll do it post campaign. I prefer hearing dialogue about coriphyshit over Solas, not that I don't like Solas(he's my current romance and one my favorite characters).

Yeah it isn't the greatest post game out there. Though since my current play through is an elf romanced with Solas, I can't make out with my current L.I. either way(not that I actually want to).

Yeah timed exclusive content isn't fair for people who don't own a PC or Xbone.

Ha ha If I had a nickel for every time I heard that in this game...

The Npc's will comment on what you have done.

I'd say do it before the final battle

Also new armour and weapons might be helpful for last battle, if, not at least you could get some use out of them. Playing post story means you'd have to sit on any new stuff until there is new dlc.

When talking to them at Skyhold?

Well my elf is a knight enchanter with super powerful gear already.. but I see your point. I'll probably do it before the last mission then. I still have lots to do.

No, Skyhold is not part of the dlc so the npcs will have their normal dialogue.

The npc's you encounter in the dlc are will comment

I plan to do it pre-ending, mostly because I want my Inquisitor in that armor in the final scene  :)

So why wouldn't new NPCs comment on what I've done if I finish the game first? I'm confused LOL.

Are you talking about the armor in the DLC trailer? If so, that's the sturdy armor you get in the Hissing Waste.

The people in skyhold won't. But anyone you talk to in the frostback basin will. There arent any new npcs in skyhold.

Oh I see.

I thought when you said "do it before the final battle" was because the new NPCs in the Basin will not comment on what I've done if I don't. I'm kind of tired and can't think straight at the moment.

No, I mean the Dragon Hunter armor you get in the DLC.

I quite liked doing it after the main quest. It felt more appropriate, in storytelling terms, to be searching for remains of the first Inquisition after Corypheus was defeated. You know that sense of "cool story bro, now what" that you get once you finish the base game? This DLC felt like an answer to that. Going on this new mission to uncover some hard truths about the original Inquisition, now that Cory's threat is gone, felt like something my IQ would be doing after all has been said and done and her own Inquisition was left somewhat aimless, hanging there with no real purpose. Some of the things you deal with in the DLC helped me clear up some questions and find a new direction my character would want to take the new Inquisition in. Everyone will see it their own way, but for me, that realisation would've felt really out of place before the final battle.

I completed the DLC just before the final battle, but honestly, I wish I had played it much earlier in my playthrough just to have access to all the new weapon/armor schematics and crafting materials, not to mention having earlier access to Aegis of the Rift (damn, I wish I had that ability earlier, would've made my life a lot easier in previous fights, including the dragon battles)..... I'll probably start the DLC content in my next playthrough once I hit level 20, I think.

hmmm...I sometimes don't even hit level 20 in my playthroughs.  Not sure what to make of this new dlc at this point.  It seems like post game and then more endless grinding to get ready for it.  It's making think I should probably wait till more early level dlc eventually comes out so the level progression is a bet better paced.

Like many in here are indicating, I think it depends on whether you value it more in terms of story, or in terms of items and abilities that will be really useful in the main game.  There are some excellent loot items here, and Aegis of the Rift is a really useful tool, especially for ranged combat.  It sounds like story is your main concern however, and personally I think it works better as a story post-game.  The whole expedition makes more sense to me after the Corypheus threat is resolved, since the two stories are not tied together in anyway.  Whichever you decide, I'd also recommend taking that lvl 20 recommendation seriously, unless you are trying to make things more challenging on purpose.  Enemies are quite a bit tougher here.

Perfect timing. I was just about to ask the story/lorewise question. Any other opinions?

...

You would definitely want to do it before What Pride Hath Wrought. Personally, I like that one better as a continuation quest right into the closing of the game.  The pacing feels right to me.

As for the rest of your story concerns, the advertising kind of gives away the dragon-hunting bit, but its not self-evident in the story itself.  That is, your story reason for being in the Frostback Basin doesn't have anything to do with a dragon.  Things just sort of move in that direction as you go.  It has kind of a mild (albeit intriguing) rationale for the inquisition to be there.  This is not to say the story is bad.  The story is fantastic.  But it really is a side-story in every sense.  That's why I prefer it as a post-campaign.

i am doing it after and i found the battles to be quite challenging. the rifts especially. sometimes, with 4 level-24 pride demons gang-r**ping Sera, she stood no chance and die almost immediately.
