So since I have a fire staff on mage, should I also upgrade inferno abilities? Curently I have most of my points on Lightning and a few on spirit and winter. Should I cancel everything and go full inferno or is it better to have mixed abilities?

It helps to go for a mix so that you can choose the right element to take advantage of weaknesses to <element> and avoid resistances to <element>. If you have Energy Barrage then your fire staff produces fire damage via Energy Barrage and you then have all the elements covered with your existing spec.
