Some cool builds are being made with the gathering of the storm fix. But its one of those things...without spirit blade...wouldn't it be better to just play a well built keeper or elementalist? :)

On my Combo King, no, due to pota/SC/Combat Clarity/FC/SF/CL/GS interaction. If you intend to do the noobish FC/FS/CL CC build, you might as well put yourself to sleep instead of the enemy.

Why swing and potentially miss the projectiles when you can avoid them all together? Also, why let him teleport away when you can interrupt his dig?

And no, you're not going to always grab aggro. See the aggro thread for detailed explanation why-- especially if there's an archer that likes to leaping shot / archer's lance (and they all do, with few exceptions) the DC.

Ok, let me take a guess at the progression of the combo king:

Level 1: Spirit Blade, Chain Lightning

Level 2: Fade Shield

Level 3: Rejuvenating Barrier

Level 4: Fade Cloak

Level 5: Upgrade Fade Cloak

Level 6: Combat Clarity

Level 7: Gathering Storm

Level 8: Guardian Spirit? (I guess you could wait on this, I personally always get it early)

Level 9: Disturbance of Spirit or Upgrade Chain Lightning

Level 10: Whichever you didn't get at level 9

Level 11: Encircling Veil

Level 12: Restorative Veil

Level 13: POA

Level 14: Shaken Veil

Level 15: Stone Fist

Level 16: Upgraded Stone Fist

So at level 16, you're complete(mostly)? Until 14 or 15 you are still using spirit blade, right?  Until levels 10-12 you can't realistically have POA without gimping yourself. The combo "prince" certainly isn't carrying against the RTC at the 10-12 mark unless you've got the gear/promotions to boost.

Now lets look at the "noobish" build that I watched solo the April Fools event at level 12. (I believe I solo'd the event on mine at 15 or 16 because that's the level he happened to be at when the event started. Then I ran one or two more matches with a group before switching to a less OP character)

Level 1: Spirit Blade, Chain Lightning

Level 2: Fade Shield

Level 3: Rejuvenating Barrier

Level 4: Fade Cloak

Level 5: Upgrade Fade Cloak

Level 6: Combat Clarity

Level 7: Guardian Spirit(can wait if you are experienced / geared)

Level 8: Fade Step

Level 9: Frost Step - At this point you can solo perilous pretty easily. A friend of mine was able to take down the red templars, even the RTC with 3 downed players during wave 5 at level 9. Believe there were a couple level 1's(me being one of them) and another player that lasted a little while longer than the the other level 1 and I.

Level 10: Defending Blade or Upgraded CL

Level 11: Upgrade CL or Defending Blade - At this point build is complete and you can absolutely solo/carry perilous on all factions even with subpar gear and promotions

Level 12: Since build is pretty much complete I personally work my way towards Conductive Current, but its all gravy (gathering storm)

I see the allure of the 15-19 range on the combo king, and its great synchronization during experienced team play. (For example the Static Cage, 2 keeper teammates in your video)

My point: For those who aren't as familiar with the game(noobs as you would say, but you've also stated we all start somewhere), havn't played 100's of matches on the AW, are trying to get promotions for willpower quickly, are primarily playing with PUGS ect. ect. ect. The cookie cutter build does what its meant to do...give you that trump card at mid-range levels. Combo King? Possibly.

Are they both effective when complete? Yes. Is one better than the other? I'm not sure.

I think you should rename the cookie cutter build from the "noobish" build to possibly the "Snooze" build. I do not claim to be witty, maybe you can think of something better.

Why swing and potentially miss the projectiles when you can avoid them all together? Also, why let him teleport away when you can interrupt his dig?

Oh, on the cookie cutter build you can avoid them all together with FC or FS, but its awesome being a Jedi. The damage from the counter isn't terrible. Barrier from the counter damage is convenient as well. Shoot, most the time I just ignore it and let it hit my barrier. Easy enough to use one chain lightning on the gazillion mobs around me and get it right back without even noticing I was hit by the projectile.

As far as letting him teleport, I do my best not to. Like I mentioned I suppose I use "cheesy" tactics by getting him to stairs or other uneven terrain as much as possible. Its really not necessary though, he can teleport away all he wants while I'm slaughtering his minions or auto attacking him while he tries to shoot me and then gets it sent back at him or dodged. When he decides to come back after shooting his weak projectile at me we can continue our sparring match, most likely on stairs I moved to while he was away.

And no, you're not going to always grab aggro. See the aggro thread for detailed explanation why-- especially if there's an archer that likes to leaping shot / archer's lance (and they all do, with few exceptions) the DC.

I believe I said it was pretty simple, not that I always grabbed aggro. Really doesn't matter, if I get the aggro before the archer (or any other class really) goes down, great. If not...he loses the aggro upon dying and I'll then have it. At this point someone will probably res the archer, I'll have the DC on the stairs and a couple minutes later we'll be extracting.

Why guess when it is right here

Oh I have no doubt you're skilled and won't die. Pugs die like flies though, even on the noob build.

So at level 16, you're complete(mostly)? Until 14 or 15

You completely missed Static Charge. That's essential to the build. Extra weaken passive buffs can wait.

14-16 is about right (both GS passives can wait, though early spirit is advisable for newer players). Though really, anyone skilled with the AW can solo perilous at level 5 with FC.

I don't make builds for noobs (ok, I do have one starter Keeper build for reference purposes). I have builds for people willing to learn to take advantage of them. High Reward. If they're not willing to learn, I don't want them around.

My point: For those who aren't as familiar with the game

If they're in my party, they get shown the ropes quickly (or get booted if they're not willing to learn & adapt). Not really my problem otherwise. AW's an unlockable class, so you inherently cannot be completely new to the game in order to play it.

Waaah newbies. Are you one? No. Are they in my party for long? No. They learn fast or get booted for being unwilling to learn. Mistakes are allowed, bad attitude is not. They're no longer newbies when they learn.  Are people that are unwilling to learn going to be in the fade shortly? Yes. Should I care about those people? No.

No, because they'll die regardless (because they are noobs). Do you really think they'll FC correctly, use stairs, hit the projectiles, or use any of the advanced tactics we've discussed? Hahaha. Those come from practice.  Better they learn the ropes correctly to begin with than having to unlearn bad habits and relearn good ones.

Too bad we can't play in the same game. I can broadcast my game to twitch.tv, but you can't participate in-game directly because you're console and I'm on PC with no cross platform play.

¸Drasca,

I managed to solo Perilous Demons using your build (2 times using different staves). After watching my previously failed attempts,I noticed that made some mistakes with spell rotation,FC were critical.

Build: Drasca's Combo kingTM

Equipment used:Pyre of the Forgotten,S.b. of health,S.HoK and stagger rings,S.cooldown amulet,Ice resist and willpower armor.

Stats:Con 36,Will 29,Cun 39.

Awesome. Yes, aggressive FC is crucial. The typical rotation for me is Approach enemy--> FC --> Finish FC inside enemy while casting Pota --> CL --> SF --> FC --> repeat. Adjust as necessary.

Positioning matters with this build. You could've had an easier time if you positioned at a corner cover or at the stairs.

Equipment choices:

I prefer spirit resist and electrical resist on my armor, but that doesn't matter too much when you have the proper tonics. Consider Lyrium Potion and Pitch. Stagger Rings are definitely a valid choice, so are HoK. I have enough defenses, so I use Attack Rings.

This video is during an older patch, but still demonstrates what occurs when you use a corner and the spell rotation involved. Not perfectly (I should've opened with FC and used cover more), but better than having no example.

Being able to solo very quickly is a side benefit. The primary benefit is during team matches since all these combos & incapacitates synergize with your allies. I had a series of matches last night where two assassin friends cleaned up, getting automatic crits on the sleeping emeies, and discharge aoe's on the paralyzed ones.

You'll do less personal kills, but have a lot more fun as a group, AND kill faster as a group this way than SB AW's ever will. SB provides zero team benefit.
