I feel incredibly good doing Hinterlands. Now that I know the rest of the game is as bad as Hinterlands or worse (Hissing Wastes), Hinterlands actually feel great ![]()
Through infinite+1 playthroughs it became one of my favorite places. Not a desert, not a swamp, not another desert and... well... could be more beautiful but since it is Fereldan I guess it is as good as it gets.

The regret demon is prevalent throughout the entire game. He's the enemy you never get to face, the evil you can never outpace, he is up, he is down, he is all around.
And he is served by many many angry bears....

The Hinterlands are very pretty, actually. The storm coast pisses me off with all the mountains but it is what it is.

Your protest sounds valid. I just uninstalled. Dang, I could have just stayed in Haven collecting iron and elfroot, that would have much more intellectual depth. I knew I could have done something more sophisticated. Dude, roam Hinterlands for both of us, will you?

I love the detail on the Coast that shows the power of the modeling, but agree that those impassable areas hit a raw nerve! Several!

My regret demon is Silence, and it laughs as I watch the ticking clock, waiting for a banter that never comes...

My Regret Deamon nowadays lives in my wallet. Every time i need to use my wallet and open it it speaks to me with a loud and sarcastic voice:
Why? WHY DID YOU SPEND € 69,-?!
WHY?!

I mostly stayed in the Hinterlands and did as much as I could in it (except that stupid quest that wanted me to grab a flower from a high level zone ugh WHYYYY). Explored a bit of the other 3 lower-level zones, but mostly Hinterlands all at once.
It was okay. It did drag on, but I handled it. I do agree that the game design for this was imperfect, but as a player, I wasn't very annoyed. I just took this as the Inquisitor being a hands-on person (he isn't even the Inquisitor at this point right?, but just Herald?) and trying to help others in a more personal level than the greater tasks of later zones. Things were rather front loaded, but I was ready to sink in dozens of hours there, and I did. By the end of it, I only had a few sidequests and the dragon left to do.
However, I didn't pace the rest of the zones 'properly', so I recently had to do 3-4 whole zones (for completionism I mean) and a few dragons before entering the Winter Palace. A future playthrough will pace things better, a general guide being:
-Temple
-Hinterlands and Storm Coast
-Mage/Templar
-Forgotten Oasis and Fallow Mire
-Haven
-Crestwood and Western Approach (maybe dragons?)*
-Wardens*
-Emerald Graves and Exalted Plains (and dragons and revisiting zones)*
-Winter Palace*
-Hissing Wastes and Emprise Du Lion (and dragons and revisiting zones)*
-Arbor Wilds
-Finishing up (and maybe Jaws of Hakkon)
-Ending
-Jaws of Hakkon (if not already done)
If I can at least do the 'main questlines' and then some of each zone in the 'appropriate time', I think I won't be as annoyed. It wasn't Hinterlands that got me - it was the knowledge that I had at least a few zones that I 'sped past' (not concerned about outleveling, but rather the zone being less important to the main story context I'm in).
*= these ones can be done in a more varied order, as they have less tuning for Lv 1-10, but a more broad Lv 10-20 progression and story.
