I'd like to bandage him up but how do I do this? Can you use poultice on someone else, and if so, exactly how?

Talk to the soldier. You should get an option to bandage him up. Alistair will say that he has some bandages.

I think Allistar will bandage him no matter what dialouge options you choose.

I did not get a conversation with the dying soldier. When I right-clicked on him, I just got the 'loot' screen with the boots. I tried with Alistair in control, same thing. I'll have to retry. I right-clicked on him just as I would anyone I wanted to talk to.

If I remember correctly, there are a couple of dead soldiers in the wilds too. What does your cursor look like when you pass it over them? A treasure chest or a dialogue bubble? The wounded soldier I saw was animated (trying to crawl his way back to camp)
If you are getting inventory when you click on him then he is dead or you are clicking on another dead soldier.

If you take too long he dies

I got a treasure chest when I clicked, and he wasn't animated. I'm going to go back to an earlier save and see if I can find the correct Dying Soldier more quickly.
Thanks to all for the helpful responses!

He should show up right after the pack of wolves attack you. Stay to your left by the destroyed structure. If you get to the Darskspawn you passed him.

It would be cool if he appeared later in the game. I was afraid he was going to turn into a darkspawn once he got to the camp because he had been effected by the blood..would have been cool if he had show early in the game effect of decisions and that the "good" decision may not always be.

I'm sorry if I put this in the wrong forum. I was really originally looking for a technique to heal NPCs.

Mages with healing spells can do this, although they have to target the NPC they want to heal manually. I don't think it'd work for scripted encounters like this one, though.

If the bartender dies, his waitress takes over the bar and renames it.
