At any point in the story, your Inquisitor can trigger a flashback event that's basically 2-4 hours detailing the important events in their life all the way up to their involvement at the Conclave.

Essentially, you get to define your character's personality more and have more opportunity to interact with the unique cultures and specific events for each of those groups that we're told about during character creation.

Trevelyan Mages experience a terrifying escape from the Circle, Tal-Vashoth experience life in the Valo-kas company, Lavellan get to meet their clan, Cadash gets to meet some of their important contacts in the Carta, etc.

Nothing necessarily world-altering but also a chance to really flesh out your Inquisitor.

One pro is that fewer schedules have to be managed for the VAs and it should be relatively light on game/development resources since many elements can be reused from other parts of the game. It also answers what a lot of fans were clamoring for after release of some Origins-style background content. It also provides a chance for more world-building and interweaving of political powers, enriching the feel of the world in general.

The main problem I see is that this poses a challenge for XP and item rewards since it's all done in the past. My solution is that a war table operation opens up at the end of the content which allows you to collect a stash hidden during these events or retrieve relics from the Circle tower, etc. based on background. Maybe XP wouldn't even factor in but instead it would be solely story/character rewards and the items mentioned above.

In any case, I think this would be a pretty neat idea and not one too difficult to implement. Also, it does satisfy a pretty vociferous group in the fanbase so I think it's nothing but positives.

I'm into this... Of course this would mean Rockstar would have to offer us some story based content, and they seem to be all about the big empty maps filled with +2 power fetch questing. That's their vision now...

I'd rather not have a flashback. I like how what our past was like is up to us.

A good idea. The Trevelyan mage did not escape the Circle, but rather was sent to the conclave by the Ostwick Circle because they thought the presence of a mage from a noble family would foster civility and better understanding.

As for the XP/ability problem, that could be solved with the fact that the custom character forgets a lot of stuff because of the Nightmare. And by the time the character remembers, they have already relearned the talents basically.

@Hanako, I feel the same as you, actually. I think that would still work with this idea since the Inquisitors we play are already predefined to a certain extent and I would like each of the origins in this idea to have as much variation in choice as possible within those parameters.

A rogue/warrior Trevelyan could be as apathetic or engaged with their family as they would like. I believe it was mentioned that a child of their position would also be expected to join the Chantry in some fashion so there could be those overtones in the story, with your character being as hostile or accepting of that expectation as well.

A Cadash could be as vile or saintly in the world of the Carta as they would like but still have to deal with the same challenges. But my thinking is that since we have the beginnings of our Inquisitor's origins already, this would just expand that and bring it to life more.

And so on from there but I certainly wouldn't want this to be done to feel like we're being more restricted to how we envision our backstory. Like the prologues in DAO, while the events are mostly predetermined, they all felt like you were living them and could live them as completely different individuals. I'm not trying to live in the past but I think the idea could be translated to Inquisition with ease and still be fresh to this game and our heroes.

I see this as flashbacks that pose a series of questions to better formulate your past and it had better include the mage skipping restoration classes. :D

I, for one, would love to see my Trevelyan interact with the templar he had a crush on. In my--and I hate using this word because it's so... tumblr (ew)--"headcanon," he lies a little to Josephine when he says nothing happened between them because he was "too shy" to talk to him, and in fact, they did have a brief relationship.

But, that's a decent idea, and we all know how much Bioware likes to listen to those. B^)

Practically, though, there would potentially be far too many variables for it to be feasible.

I think having something would be nice. It would add a lot to some of the origin based war table missions (I'm still annoyed that no one bothered asking my Lavellan if she was okay after she basically got her entire clan slaughtered).

I'm ambivalent towards Bioware doing this, simply because I can't imagine how easy or hard it would be. But if they could do it, it'd be a nice touch.

Alternatively, they might also just have the option of having your Inquisitor go see their origin-people. This might mean a Trevalyan noble has to deal with the relatives in person, or a Lavellan visits a grave marker for her people (If she got them killed), or what have you. I suppose I'd just like to have a little more of an opportunity to flesh out my characters' personalities in context with their pasts.

That past idea and all the variables could work easily in a story based game like Dragon Age: Last Court.

I would freaking devour an Origins DLC. I'm out of likes >< I'll hit it tomorrow (or whenever I'm on site again). I do want end of dlc XP though. Experience grind is too slow in this game. The Origin specific items sound great too. What about origin specific Skyhold jammies as one reward? :P
