I had originally posted this in the patch 6 thread, but it's gotten kind of buried. I've confirmed that since patch 6, DA:I can no longer be hotsampled. When the window is resized, the game does not re-render, but merely stretches. In-game it looks alright, but once a screenshot is taken, you can see what's happened. I also use ReShade with the game, and it does not recompile upon resizing the window, so I know for sure that there is no re-rendering taking place.

I rolled back to patch 5 and found that the change was most likely caused by a change in the executable, dbdata.dll, or both, since they have to "match" for the game to start up. I'd imagine this was a pretty major change, but if there is any way to reverse it, those of us taking screenshots of the game would be very appreciative. It's too pretty to just play, as far as I'm concerned. I hope it can be fixed, especially since there are new areas added by the DLC.

That's interesting  I'll give it a try with shadow play -apparently 6 was not done and it tried to launch and locked up

Just wanted to jump in on this - now that they've figured out mods with Patch 6, the only thing holding me back from updating and purchasing JoH is the hotsampling issue. I'd love to see a fix for this.

You say "when the window is resized" in the OP. Does that mean this isn't an issue if you play and stay in full screen mode?

This is only an issue for people taking screenshots of this game using a hotsampling technique. There aren't any problems if you're not resizing the window while in game.

You want to have more experience in grinding?

Why are you re-sizing the window? I played full screen myself.

...because people enjoy checking out online forums, watching Netflix, Facebooking and online chats with friends all at the same time while playing DAI.

Well, possibly, but those of us interested in this issue take screenshots as a (serious, in my case) hobby. In order to do so we have to be able to use both custom aspect ratios and resolutions outside of our native resolution. Hotsampling allows us to do that. There is a link to my Flickr (with a DA:I album in it) in my signature, if you're interested.

Not sure what this would have to do with exp and grinding in-game...?

The only mods I use are texture replacements. I don't use any game-changing mods, and I don't use CheatEngine.

Nope, hotsampling the game is for taking screenshots at higher resolutions than your monitor can support. Without hotsampling, the only way to get high-rez screenshots is to use NVIDIA DSR, but not many people have the capabilities to run this game at 4k at more than 5fps. But even then, you can't get custom aspect ratios.

Like siuan said, this is for serious screenarchery. I also have a link in my sig to my Flickr.

I'm just now finding about this issue today, but I would like to add my voice to the forum.

Just like a few others, I've also been experiencing this issue, and have since then reverted to Patch 5 to be able to take screenshots. I hope a resolution can be found, since I'd love to play the DLC one day and see what the new map has to offer.

Hotsampling has pretty much become a necessity for me, and it's difficult to go without it now.

When the mod issue happened with Patch 6, another member came up with the below method to be able to play the DLC and still keep Patch 5 for mods - essentially flip-flopping between the two:

Make backups first! Here are mine, in addition to the main install itself:

Main Install: K:\Electronic Arts\Dragon Age Inquisition
Patch 5 Game Backup: K:\!BACKUPS\!PROGRAMS\BIOWARE\Dragon Age Inquisition\!BACKUPS\2015-03-24\!BACKUP - Patch 5\Dragon Age Inquisition
Patch 6 Game Backup: K:\!BACKUPS\!PROGRAMS\BIOWARE\Dragon Age Inquisition\!BACKUPS\2015-03-24\!BACKUP - Patch 6\Dragon Age Inquisition
Saves: K:\!BACKUPS\!PROGRAMS\BIOWARE\Dragon Age Inquisition\!BACKUPS\2015-03-24\Save

That's a lot of !BACKUPS.

My steps:

Rename the Main Install Dragon Age Inquisition folder to Dragon Age Inquisition - Patch 6.
Copy the Patch 5 Game Backup Dragon Age Inquisition folder to K:\Electronic Arts\. Run game.
If I need to switch back to Patch 6, rename the Patch 5 Game Backup Dragon Age Inquisition folder from K:\Electronic Arts\ to Dragon Age Inquisition - Patch 5,
and then rename Dragon Age Inquisition - Patch 6 to Dragon Age Inquisition. Probably a good idea to keep Origin closed when renaming/switching, to avoid any issues.

Just tried it to make sure it works, and it seems to so far. I do get prompted to activate the game when clicking play after switching back to Patch 5, but not when switching back to Patch 6.
I did notice that any saves made with Patch 6 installed could not be opened with Patch 5 installed, even though the versions in the package.mft files matched, so keep that in mind.

Obviously this is no longer needed for mods, but any thoughts on if this would work with SRWE?

I would like to add my voice to help this issue get noticed and (hopefully) solved.  I think everyone appreciates that Bioware keeps fixing things in DA:I, but as a hobby screenshotter it is a serious problem. I don't know what is the reason behind this change, but it would be really nice if it could be reversed and we can use  hotsampling again. I simply can't "just" play the game without taking hq screenshots, it is too beautiful...

I have also been having this issue.  Since taking screenshots in one of my favorite things to do in the game I probably will not be purchasing any DLC until this is fixed in some way.

It does not look like we are likely to get anywhere with this. I think I may post on the DeadEndThrills forum. I think this is probably not something they can do anything about, but sometimes the hacks they come up with there blow my mind. If there is a way to fix it on the user end, they'll find it. In the meantime, maybe more people can add their voice here.

I just heard that another patch came out today. Can anybody confirm if SRWE functionality has changed for the better?

I will give it a try later today. No harm since everything is backed up. I'll let you know how it goes. Keep your fingers crossed.

Yes! I will be anxious to hear. Another user said the new patch looks different:

No improvements. Same thing as before. I'm going to go post on DET now.

They should build in a feature inside the game to take hotsmapling screenshots. Elite: Dangerous has this and it's handy.

Yeah, some games are very friendly to screenshotting. But most aren't, unfortunately. Some are downright unfriendly. I have a feeling we're stuck with the situation in this one. If people can use custom resolutions in their driver display panel they might be alright. But I think a lot of people here may be playing on a laptop.

Would you be able to give a quick rundown on how that would work? So far for DA:I the only "solution" I can think of would be to run the game via NVIDIA DSR, which would involve manually going into the in-game settings and changing the resolution every time I wanted to get a screenshot. Of course, that also is limited to where you can pause the game. Cutscenes would have to actually be run at the higher resolution, which means watching them at ~5fps. I'd have to imagine that most folks don't have the hardware to run the game at 4k all the time - I sure don't.

I believe that is what you'd have to do, but since my monitor does not support it (I am usually not an early adapter for a reason, but this 4K beauty was too good to pass up, I suppose), I don't know much about it. I think there is quite a bit about it scattered in various threads on DET, though. A lot of those guys have been using the Nvidia custom resolutions to shoot games that are DX11 and don't work with SRWE.

My best hope already responded on DET and said he wouldn't be taking any more shots of this game, which implies that he doesn't think there is a solution. He's the one who writes a pretty huge percentage of Cheat Engine tables that unlock free cameras, FOV, and so forth. So I think we're probably stuck with things as they are.

Crap.  The only solution that I know of has already been mentioned by you and Melissa.  Manually changing resolution via your graphics card.  This is most unfortunate.
