The game is crashing constantly. I cannot even leave the Chantry in Lothering without crashing. Every time!
According to the log the game tries to initialize online features but cannot read the offers.xml file (the file does not even exist on my hard drive), then it tries to start the DADM service and DADM control server, but fails. Then the game just crashes. Every time. Apparently, I cannot play the offline single player game without being online which is contrary to what has been advertised and stated by the developers. The following is taken from the log :
General Initialize - Online Features
OnlineFeatures LoadOffers() : Unable to read file 'C:\\Documents and Settings\\username\\My Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\Settings\\offers.xml'!
DA Download Manager (DADM) Service was started!
DA Download Manager (DADM) OpenService failed (1060)
General Initialize - Initialization Complete
DA Download Manager (DADM) Attempting to connect to DADM Control Server!
DA Download Manager (DADM) Could not connect to DADM Control Server!
DA Download Manager (DADM) OpenService failed (1060)
DA Download Manager (DADM) Restarting DADM HeartBeat!
This is going to require Bioware to release a patch, since it very much looks like "defective programming/level editing" in Lothering and may have been done purposely to force people to login to EA's online servers(which doesn't work, I tried). How do I come to this conclusion, you ask?
I have loaded up a previous save that was in Lothering and was able to go into and out of the tavern numerous times without crashing, but If I take my character into the Chantry and then try to leave, the game crashes and sends the same "Could not connect to DADM Control Server!" message to the log before shutting down. Every time (at least 10 attempts)! Further, I have started several new characters since then and played to the end of each origin without a single crash. I am curious why some people are able to get through the area without a crash while many others cannot. Strange. Regardless, it is my strong opinion that Lothering contains "defective programming/level editing" based on the Dragon Age crash log evidence.

It's funny how Bioware can now use the evil EA as a scapegoat for everything and still maintain it's credibility in the general public eye. (It's not our fault, EA won't let us fix it.) Mass Effect had the "General Protection Fault" error that caused the game to crash constantly for many people and to my knowledge was never fixed. I waited for over a year to see a patch that never came. Needless to say, I gave up on Mass Effect ever being fixed.
I just hope against all odds that EA/Bioware will not treat Dragon Age the same way, because it is truly an amazing game. Too bad about the fatal advertising crash bugs.

Not as funny as players using the evil EA as a scapegoat for everything
Come on now, be nice.
The download manager contacting the server is not be dependent on in-game content like that, or vice versa. You crashing in Lothering or anywhere else is coincidence (and the reason why others are not getting this).
What could be happening is that there was content that downloaded and for whatever reason exiting the Chantry which triggers a load transition got that into a bad state.
Hard to say with just that info - but there certainly isn't anything malicious or dependent between the two, and you most certainly should never have to be online to play DA.
