Regarding Leliana's Quest

I just played "The Left Hand of the Divine" for the first time, and it ended with her executing the sister despite my objections. I understand her actions here are reflective of what you've said to her prior to this. That makes sense I suppose, but so far I haven't seen anyone who  seems to know exactly what all of them are, or which ones are necessary.

 

I assume asking her to spare Butler is necessary? I said nothing when that option came up at the start of the game, but later on I did tell her that we have to be better than Corypheus after we first arrived in Skyhold. My first playthroughs often have something that doesn't work out how I would have hoped, which is fine. But I'm just trying to understand how this mechanic works. Do we have to hit them all in order to get her to be "unhardened" or is it whichever option you tell her most often? That would mean there are options that I missed.

It's that first one, I believe. That's really the one that tells her "I can't just kill every b*stard out there."

In order to soften her, you'll need to take the following dialogue options:

- express your sympathy when she talks about the Divine's death

- do not let her kill the traitor

- when in Skyhold, tell her that the soldiers are not expendable

 

If all the mentioned options are taken Leliana will not kill the chantry sister when you say her so, but if you want her to become less sociopathic, you still need to do the following:

- when she finds the Divine's secret box in her personal quest, tell her to stop torturing herself

- when you get back to Skyhold, tell her that she changed in the good way etc. and she will become softened

It all hinging on that one choice seems pretty absurd when she talks like I've been repeatedly telling her to kill people since then.

 

EDIT: When you say express sympathy for the Divine's death, you mean in her first conversation when she asks what the Maker's game is? Is there one specific sympathy line you need to hit?

I think on the dialogue wheel you need to choose "My sympathies" or something similar in the place of the top answer, and the Inquisitor will say something like "I'm sorry, her death clearly hit you hard"

I'm pretty sure all softening options need to be taken, which is absurd. Sigh. Those are, as Taki17 pointed out:

Why isn't there an option to backhand this stupid brat, get in her face, and tell her she'll follow orders to the letter or she'll spend her tenure with the Inquisition in a cell?

 

That's really what we needed. Not a 'softening' option.

If I recall correctly, how you choose to deal with the traitor situation at the beginning of the game determines which path Leliana's morality takes, regardless of other choices.

I don't think that's correct, one time I've taken all the "good" options, except for saying that the men are not expendable, and Leliana killed the chantry sister even when I told her to let her go.

I don't really have a problem with Leliana's development, seeing how I prefer her hardened anyway, but they sure could have worded the options better, or at least made sure the quest dialog made sense. In one playthrough my Inquisitor was all 'how she decides to do her job is none of my business', therefore he said nothing in the spy scene (he was pretty much nobody then anyway, why would he impose?), and was kind of 'well, bad stuff happens to soldiers' later, and suddenly in the sister quest Leliana was all 'how dare you criticize when you taught me to be this way D:(((' when he dared to ask if it was really necessary or something like that. Wait, what?

I think there are a number of problems with this

 

Firstly, the binary nature of Leliana's Psychology -either strict pacifist or ruthless killer of all who would oppose her with no middle ground of her restricting her killing to saving lives.

 

Secondly, the traitor Butler is stated to have murdered Leliana's top agent an poses a threat to the lives of dozens more. The only in-game alternative to killing Butler is to imprison him but Leliana knows Butler would find a way to escape and continue murdering.

So the decision is "Is it okay to kill one enemy murderer in order to protect the lives of your people?" and arguing there are practical alternatives to killing does not soften Leliana -you have to oppose on moral grounds.  The problem with this is the Inquisitor and Inquisition spend the whole game killing enemies - arguing that Leliana shouldn't kill one as it is immoral seems like hypocrisy.

I suspect something went wrong with this decision when they changed the game so the player character didn't become inquisitor until later - partially because of the greater involvement and authority but also there may have been a judgement for Butler (maybe a chance to establish his innocence).

 

and thirdly the scene with the Chantry sister/spy should not happen as it did without more from the player to encourage her to behave in such a manner.

 

I was also disappointed that I missed out on my chance to support Cassandra as divine as I had not committed to that in a conversation before I saw Leiliana turn psycho.

You are right, except you don't need to be understanding when she talk about Justina's death

I almost kind of suspect maybe it's actually intentionally meant to trick the player? Because there's certainly no warning that the one quest will decide Leliana's entire future and it's so far removed from it's actual consequences nobody can undo the decision without basically restarting the game. Most other decision points talk about the consequences more clearly (like Cole's quest), but this one does not and only mentions the spy who you don't see either way. So if it's not intended to try to teach the player a harsh lesson about not underestimating the weight of choices, I'd say it's extremely poorly designed.

It was a little weird how she does what you say when you are just her coworker telling her how to do her job, but when you're her boss, she disobeys your direct orders.
