I was thinking about it while doing the horse quests time race.

Why not making a mini game based on this?

It could start with a view quests on your map at the influence table when you're arriving in Skyhold. The quest could look like having to settle a debt, or someone wants to duel the Inquisitor, or invite him/her to a tourney.

A race could look like this: one to five rounds racing against one or more opponents in different places/maps.Winning the race could get the inquisition more influence, gold, items or scematics. I'm thinking about having buffs for to make the influence table more interesting or just to get new mount skins (cough). Maybe the spend perk point for the saddle could make your mount faster, but I don't think one would waste a perk for this.

Or one could just race against the own companions, just for fun? (Think about Dorian on a shining white stallion in a dashing outfit.)

What I'd like to add is, I think it's a pity there are not bigger places on the maps for you to just take your noble steed and ride into the sunset ... so to speak. ( I'm a little bit romantic in such matters .. )

What do you think?

What's bad about this idea and why? What do you like?

Hmm...I feel like there would be some great opportunities to hear companion banter while racing them (find who who's the most competitive :P). It'd also give me more to do with my majestic screeching Halla and noble nug ^_^

If you map break in the Exalted Plains, there is a dirt track outside the camp where Celene's soldiers are. I wondered if it was intended to be used for something at some point. The horse race idea is good. Racing dracoliths would be good too, especially if they added a feature where they could climb up cliffs and certain walls.

So other ideas:

Dance Dance Halamshiral! Button press in correct sequence to earn enough points to impress the court.

Wicked Grace. Chess. Diamond Back. That game Cullen was playing. All self-explanatory.

Capture the Flag. Choose from different flags (Inquisition, Ferelden, Dalish, Qunari, etc.) and play in different areas.

Breach the Keep. A variation of the above. One team defends, the other tries to take the keep.

Keep the Breaches. Some variant of the above invented by Sera. Rules unclear, change often. Full of puns and euphemisms.

I feel this kills the sense of urgency a bit, but on the other hand some folks need a diversion.  I honestly think it would make more sense as a cultural diversion that we can observe and get the team feedback, as the glowing hand is busy.   Varric and the others could be very interesting and it could lead to other quests.  We all know inquisition needs some assistance pulling all it currently has together with some general logic to plug all the plot holes.

I look back on my days of Chocobo racing fondly  but don't mind NOT having horse racing. I still need to finish the third course of that track on at least one game.  :(

I like the ideas!
Especially Wicked Grace. The characters are playing it since DA:O.

Another idea I just had was the archery contest the paper in 'Heralds Rest' speaks about.
When you're aiming it looks like the zoom of the sniper rifle in ME.

I also can imagine, spending time with your companions in such matter gains approval at some point.

I did the horse race once and never again. I hated it.

I think if they made the horse race faster with better handling and the tracks covered more areas of the map, then it would be fun.

I like them, and the horse races, too  :)

I discovered that if you gallop (instead of just canter) it is easier to control the horse.

What I do is first position the camera quite high to be able to see the gates from far away) then begin galloping and focus on the next gate. Then only use the left and right controls to make the horse go through that gate. And then focus on the next gate.

With those tactics, horse races are a piece of cake  :D
