I am thinking about a sword and shield Qunari but I have not created one yet. I am a little leery of starting the character because the race was added as a playable character so late in the games development. What do you think? If you think it is worth the play through do you have any tips?
Qunari-Fun to play?

The Qunari weren't added late in development. They just revealed them a couple of months later than the other races.

I played as a sword and shield stoic qunari and I had tons of fun. Other than the lack of armors (they don't have any special armor they can wear, unlike other races), they don't feel shoe-horned in at all.

I played a mage. I think a Qunari doing the romance with either Sera or Iron Bull would be fun, personally. ![]()
They don't have as much ties to the lore as the elves do, but you still get comments quite often, and I like the idea of a mercenary past. (And actually think it makes more sense then say, the Dalish sending their First to spy on something that had such a big chance in ending in screaming chaos.) And you do get time to flesh out your past, who you are, and such.

Taken from my post on the female qunari appreciation thread:
About time I ventured to this thread considering how much I loved playing a female qunari. First benefit: We got to see for the first, and so far only time, what female qunari look like if and only if you play as one.
You really notice just how large and muscular like a female wrestler they are when you've played as an elf for almost 100 hours and then load up an old female qunari save and are taken aback by the contrast. When playing as Addar I didn't really see just how busty she was until switching from an emaciated elf. And their height displays that authority that comes with inquisitor, although logically it should be irrelevant. My favorite part was when she lifts the sword after becoming Inquisitor and entering Skyhold in front of her advisors; much more powerful than other races.
Fortunately qunari also have magical ability. That would be a deal-breaker for me because I almost always play as a mage. What's scarier than six and a half foot tall horned qunari; one that's a mage.
I also loved instead of helmets (besides Dread for Iron Bull) they used face-paint. Face-paint looks great on a qunari. I normally hate helmets and appreciated the option to hide them. In past games I just wouldn't wear one. When playing a qunari though I don't hide them. This gives a ever-changing look to Addar including in the cut-scenes as the face-paint remains.
Negatives of playing as Addar? Qunari have always been kind of "there" in the background in Dragon Age; Tal-Vashok even more so. They don't have much of a role besides being the really tall, horned, badass looking race from far away. We know so little about the qunari in comparison to the others. What is the race even actually called? Qunari is used both for those following the qun and the race.
Humans are obviously the most significant race followed by elves. Elves have much of the "once upon a time we were blah blah" intrigue as well as the "one day we will rise again" aspect which was exasperated by Flemeth and Solas' apparent goals of recapturing the old elven glory. Dwarves are also more familiar than qunari but don't have the same significance as humans/elves.
Other negatives? Why would anyone pass up playing as a badass qunari for a scrawny elf or a plain human? The romances obviously. Two of my favorites, Cullen and Solas, are sadly blocked off from qunari. I can understand why. Solas is all about elven glory and Cullen is picky. He's handsome and has appeared largely uninterested in courtship so he'd probably be less inclined to romancing someone six inches taller than him who has horns and grey skin.
My favorite romance for a female qunari was Sera who not only is a fulfilling relationship but happens to woof for qunari women; adding intrigue. Honestly Sera hit the jackpot by managing to satisfy her fetish by bedding a qunari who happens to be the Herald of Andraste. I'd recommend this romance if you're ok with lesbian relationships and can actually stand Sera.
Last but not least, there's no race better for punching Solas and Dorian than a giant qunari.

Eh, not really. I never found the idea all that intriguing, and I gave up the playthrough

I tried playing as a Qunari but couldn't devote myself to the character. Same with the Dwarf. I always ended up selecting either Human or Elf (despite the anorexic-looking body for the Elf). Playing as a Qunari just didn't... feel right, I suppose. Uh.. not that it's less 'fun' per se.
If you've already played the game as another race it shouldn't be much different. As it is - I think the only actual difference with playing as a Qunari is that the armour selection is pretty limited from what I noticed, not sure if that's a big deal for you, but I know for some people it is. Not that the armour is very good to begin with! Hah. Besides the limited armour selection, you have their size difference, which I don't think makes a difference in matters of combat(?). Probably some dialogue choices are different, you know, those specific to race/class? Some of the romance options are restricted as well.
Either way, Qunari are just bloody well badasses.

Also the thought of slamming Bull against the wall and having angry sex with him! Hot!

I'm nearly about finished with a male Mage Adaar romancing Josie.
It's been a very fun playthrough since he looks so intimidating and as if he's perma-frowning all the time, but is actually the most nicest and laidback guy once he opens his mouth. His romance with Jospehine has also been adorable, which is strange since he's a sarcastic, horned giant and former merc, whereas she's a ridiculously polite, slightly short, Antivan noble who's work ethic is so high, she could easily have called off her betrothal to Otranto on the grounds that she's already married to her desk?
I'd definitely recommend playing as a Qunari, of either gender.

My canon Inquisitor is a Male Qunari Mage i personally can't get behind a human inquisitor only because humans are so common in Thedas and the inquisitor to me doesn't feel right as a human

Just be aware that they have the least choice in armor selection by a large margin and their hair choices are very very limited.

I love playing as a Qunari! My character is a female reaver warrior. I romanced Bill and I loved it! She's only about 5" shorter than Bull. Makes great cut scenes. Scout Harding is at perfect groin level. ☺
Also the thought of slamming Bull against the wall and having angry sex with him! Hot!
There's no way a female qunari is five inches shorter than the male. They actually look the same height. If there's a difference it's one or two inches.

"Fun to play" is subjective. What's fun for one person might not be fun for another. Just give it a shot and see if you like it.

Qunari are fun to play, I have two playable Qunari.
However because they were added so late, they look funny in certain cut scenes. Such as when they're dancing with Florianne.

Most definitely.

It should be mentioned that Qunari's (and Dwarves) have some pretty horrific graphical issues at times. The Skyhold outfit does not behave in cut scenes all all for example. Other then that they play like any other race, and get some interesting race specific content.

The only real problem with the Qunari is the Vitaars, which kinda suck?
They are absolutely garish to look at, low-armoured compared to the helmets and completely non-craftable or tintable, unlike everything else?
Half the time they look less like warpaint and more like my Qunari was dragged by some of the (invisible) kids at Skyhold to a face-painting booth at a summer fayre... or what happened after my Inquisitor got colossally drunk with Sera and passed out next to a box of crayons?

Ah yes, Bill. Good ol' Billy. My favorite companion in the game.

I like my Quinquisitor Hannah, but I don't love her. She is a 2H templar, and that is part of my issue. 2H warrior is not my favorite class to play. I think I might like Hannah better if she were a mage. I adore maging it up. I'm also having her romance Sera, which I thought would be a natural fit since Sera is already way into a horned murder goddess from the get go. But to me that relationship is not satisfying because Sera is clearly an 18 year old manic pixie dream elf and I'm an old now, so my 38 year old married cat lady perspective taints that. LOL. If this were 1996, I probably would have enjoyed the relationship more. I also hate the vitarrs. The Arashok one is particularly ugly. I cannot craft one in a color scheme to match my purple or teal armor. To me they kind of drum up this sort of tribal "Qunari are not civilized people" kind of vibe, which I don't like. I can't even put that ardent crown on her. That would wreath nicely around her horns.

I love my male qunari, Niyaz. He's a rogue DW. He started as a bowman, but I found it so boring, I wanted to claw my eyes out. I actually didn't switch him over to DW until after level 20, as I was trying to give archery a chance.
Anyway.
As a couple of others have said, there are some graphical issues with qunari. The clipping in the Skyhold pjs is awful. Some armors, too.
I'm not a big fan of vitaars, either. I have the game set to not display helmets, so I don't have to look at them. Except while crafting (whyyyy?)
But the worst is the cutscenes. Sometimes, you can see a brief flash of movement, like your qunari's head starts too high up in the scene, then *flash*; then they're at a more normal height. This doesn't bother me so much as when they don't fix it, and my qunari's head is chopped off.
Thankfully, it doesn't happen ALL the time.
All that aside, I had a lot of fun playing my m!Adaar. I normally play female characters, so he was quite the exception for me. It took me a while to get used to him, because of his size, his gender, his race, yada yada yada, but now, I just love him. So, so much. ![]()

I wouldn't mind so much if I could craft Vitaar like I can craft everything else, and customize the design or color.
