Hello. I want to create a Let's Play/Playthrough with Dragon Age: Inquisition on Nightmare difficulty, so I was wondering what builds I should give myself(I want to play as an Archer Rogue), the builds I should give the companions, as well as any other suggestions. I appreciate any advice you give. ^_^

For archer rogues, I like to start off by taking the left side of the archery tree and working my way down towards a fully upgraded Full Draw. Great for dealing with bears and those big guys with mauls and makes some of the harder fights like the end of In Your Heart Shall Burn a lot more manageable. This takes 5 skill points (in addition to the 2 you start out with for a total of 7).

My favorite specialization for an archery rogue is Assassin for its sniper-esque playstyle and crowd control abilities. The entire tree is great, save for the focus ability. An mid-game archer assassin build I like to use consists of:

  • Hidden Blades, I Was Never Here, Knife in The Shadows, Mark of Death, Throat Cutter and Knockout Bomb from the Assassin tree
  • Stealth from the Subterfuge tree
  • Long Shot, Death from Above, Leaping Shot, Strafing Shots, Full Draw + Stunning Shot from the Archery tree
  • Twin Fangs and Dance of Death from the Double Daggers tree (the Dance of Death passive still works even when not using daggers)

That's 15 skill points. Getting to Mark of Death is crucial for making the Assassin as efficient a killer as possible. Knockout Bomb is a good long-ranged crowd control ability and can set up combos against multiple enemies. Stealth doesn't need to be explained. The archery abilities are still as effective as they were early game. Dance of Death is perfect for an Archer Assassin because their skills use a lot of stamina but they also get a lot of kills with their high damage output.

With those abilities as your core, after that it's just a matter of picking up good upgrades and passives to make your job go smoother. First Blood from the archery tree will make it easier to one-shot weak enemies. Looks Like it Hurts and Cheap Shot from the Sabotage Tree (you'll need to pick up the useless Caltrops to access them) will capitalize on the autocrit you get from stealth to restore your stamina and sunder the enemy's armor. Upgrading Stealth is a good idea for getting out of certain effects that dragons can inflict and getting Easy to Miss makes you...well, easier to miss. Ambush would also be a great passive to have but it requires you to more or less waste two additional skill points to get it so I'm excluding it for this build. Finally, there are the upgrades for Hidden Blades and Mark of Death as well as the Gaps in the Armor passive from the Assassin tree to increase your damage further still. You'll need 24 skill points to get all of those.

Party set-ups that go well with this build include at least one dedicated tank like a SnS Cassandra or Blackwall to distract the enemy from you and at least one mage with good crowd-control skills (Static Cage, Pull of the Abyss, Wall of Fire) to handle large groups while you take out the stragglers one by one.

Thank you for the in-depth response about the build for my Inquisitor, DomeWing. I really appreciate it. ^_^

As for the companions, you said have a tank and a good crowd control mage but is there a build that works the best in your opinion?

SnS tanks are pretty straightforward. For any specialization, these 13 skills will help them be good at their job:

  • Shield Wall, Bear Mauls the Wolves, Shield Bash, Turn the Blade, Payback Strike, and Turn the Bolt from the Weapon and Shield Tree
  • War Cry + Call to Arms, Untouchable Defense, Challenge, Charging Bull, Trust the Steel, and Cutting Words from the Vanguard Tree

Then if you're using Cassandra, you should build towards an upgraded Wrath of Heaven for the group stun. Or if you're using Blackwall, you should build towards an upgraded Walking Fortress to make him a super tank. In both cases, it's 5 more points for a total of 18. After that, just fill out their specialization trees or go after something like Horn of Valor to help your archer do more damage.

For the crowd control/support mage, you have more options. All of them should have the standard packet of Barrier, Guardian Spirit, Peaceful Aura, Dispel and Rejuvenating Barrier from the Spirit Tree (5 skill points), but your primary control spells depend on the elemental trees you want to specialize in (you'll probably want 2):

  • Winter's Grasp + Winter's Chill, Mana Surge, Fade Step, Frost Mastery, Winter Stillness, and Ice Mine + Brittle Glyph from the Winter Tree
  • Immolate, Flashpoint, Clean Burn, and Wall of Fire + Lasting Flames from the Inferno Tree
  • Energy Barrage, Lightning Bolt, Static Charge, and Static Cage + Lightning Cage from the Storm Tree

In terms of specializations, Solas' is probably the most conducive for a crowd control mage as he gathers enemies in one place whereas Dorian causes them run around and Vivienne's is more suited for a frontline battle mage. For each, I'd get:

  • Veilstrike + Punching Down, Restorative Veil, Smothering Veil, and Pull of the Abyss + Shaken Veil from the Rift Mage Tree
  • Horror + Despair, Death Siphon, Blinding Terror, Simulacrum, and Haste from the Necromancy Tree
  • Spirit Blade, Fade Cloak, Combat Clarity, Fade Shield, Knight Protector, and Resurgence from the Knight Enchanter Tree

That takes 21-24 skill points depending on your elemental trees.

Level up then go to the hissing waste. Get the best armor and weapon schematics.  Playing as a warrior or mage could also help.

Thanks for the tip. Since The Black Emporium is out, would these best armor and weapon schematics be there as well?

It depends on what you mean by best. There isn't always agreement. For example, I think Grunsmann's Bow (available in BE) is the most awesome, but a lot of people think the Swan Bow (not in BE) is better. The Superior Prowler Armor is considered by most to be the best armor for any class (available at Hissing Waste with Short List perk), but it is not available at BE. But the much sought after and extremely hard to farm Dalish Warrior Armor is at BE.

I haven't compared the list of all possible armors that randomly appear at the Hissing Waste market with those that appear (randomly? leveled?) at the BE, but I would guess they are mutually exclusive: I believe those that are only available at one are not available at the other.

That said, there are very good schems in the BE. They are very expensive, but gold is easy to farm, so I don't think that's much of an impediment, if you have the patience to farm.

Ah, okay. I'll look online to see which fits my playstyle more.

I have no problem farming.

Thank you. :)
