First PT I did KE on normal difficulty. The extreme snooze'fest which I kicked everything made me think it might have been the KE class.

Right now I'm playing nightmare for the achievement and I reached skyhold today.

I'm playing regular dps mage this time and took Necromancer Spec.

I respec'd all my companions as follows:

1. All warriors are Sword&Board with tank spec.

2. All rogues are ranged with bows and got the first stealth skill.

3. All mages are on support roll with barrier upgraded and spammed + some CC.

Up until skyhold I used the normal trees and my mage inquisitor just kicked everything with mix of ice\fire\lightning spells.

I usually run with 1 of each class + the inquisitor.

I thought it will be harder... on level 11 inquisitor and 10 companions and some nicely crafted t1\2 gear I did the final haven mission with the trebuchet extremely easily. My tanks are on heavy vanguard spec with many aoe taunts and such while my mage make sure everyone stays alive.

B..U....T...

Once I got to skyhold and specializations came into the game... well... it's really really easy now.

All warriors got their tanking abilities boosted like way way better.

Mages got boosted nicely as well especially Viv with bonus to barriers strength from KE tree.

Rogues are DPS machines and nuke stuff in seconds.

and my Necromancer inquisitor just annihilates entire groups!

AOE Fear spell > The touch spell > Walking Bomb. then in few seconds the target dies and chain of 'splosions will kill everything. It's hilarious.

And since the pride demon on the Temple at the prologue mission I didn't used the tactical camera mode at all... Just set tactics and behaviors to all npcs and I only need to control my Inquisitor.

It's actually easier then ME 3 insanity run as Novaguard or Soldier with AR and geth rifle armed with explosive incendiary ammo lol

My Inquisitor now is level 11 and all my companions are level 10. I think it's time to try a dragon.

The Pride Demon in the very beginning of the game is certainly no joke on Nightmare.

I'd say the game doesn't really begin to alleviate its difficulty on Nightmare until you reach about level 6. Then you have enough abilities across all companions to really set up some battle-winning combos and such.

Might I suggest playing Jaws of Hakkon? You might be pleased by the added difficulty.

^This pretty much

I'd add the Envy Demon to the list of difficult fights as well but no, DAI isn't all that difficult although none of the other DA games are either provided you know what you're doing.

That one is skippable though.

Maybe it's easier doing nightmare after going through the game on an easier difficulty but try doing it on your first play through, and doing a completionist at the same time. That sh*t is difficult.

I never do first run on highest diffculty. You can't really beat the game if you don't know what you're doing.

In Origins AW + BM was god mode.

in DA2 I used to do Force\Blood Mage for insta winning as well.

But yup in inquisition once you reach haven and can reset skills and get decent starter gear game is easy.

I'll try JoH once I'll reach level 20.

Right now I plan to get 8 power then open the new JoH zone. Get the imba armor schematics and then move to Emprise Du Lion for mats (actually I can use advisors for mats there as the zone is open). once I get level 15\16 and capture emprise du lion I can get T3 weapons as well and from there it should be much much easier then it is now. :(

I always do first run on highest difficulty. Makes the game more challenging and keeps me playing it for longer, though my completionist play through finished at 100 hours which was shorter than most peoples easy play throughs.

By far, I think the first five or six levels was the hardest on nightmare (the before Skyhold drama).  After that, it's pretty smooth scaling (espeically if you've optimized your companions- if you do a sword and border (for sanity, though you could drop that and make the two handed tank I guess), a necro, then a dagger rogue and a two handed warrior it's much more annoying).

In particular, a dagger rogue on nightmare before you can find the materials to put guard on your daggers is very frustrating at the beginning (and the early middle).  So many times I almost gave up and respecced over to archer, but I wanted to be stubborn about it.  I mean, I did some great damage, but I spent a lot of time faceplanted.

There are still some hard fights, though, even with a more optimized build.  Jaws of Hakkon and the Envy demon were the big ones, yeah, but I also had some trouble with the Duchess and her minions (though you can skip her, too, and I usually do).  The Hitherlands dragon done around level 8-10 like usual was extremely frustrating, too.  I should have just waited till it was completely outleveled, but that's when I usually fought it, so I was stubborn again.  (Oddly, I don't think any other dragon came close to difficulty, as most of them don't spawn minions and fly away as much as she does- though electricity ones could be annoying when my companions were idiots.)

(Said Crestwood first time, mistake- she's easy.)

I found the pride demon at the beginning and the envy demon not too hard on nightmare. The hardest part for me was defending Haven, otherwise nightmare isn't too bad.

if you place cassandra in a way that makes the demon face to the other side of the group he won't AOE insta kill everyone.

You can res Lilieana if she falls.

kill adds as they spawn.

always disrupt rift when you can.

I've only played on Nightmare and its about what I expect normal difficulty to be actually, I died several times at big boss fights like the dragons for example, but its nowhere near difficult... it feels about right, could be a little bit harder in my opinion.

If you really hate yourself, a very low ranged party (such as having two warriors, a dagger rogue, and a mage that's specced mostly barrier and then knight enchanter) can make Fade Rifts the worst thing Ever.  You think because of the KE, everything would be a cake walk, but, surprise, DESPAIR DEMON!  Doing those with no real ranged support (or making the stupid mistake of iced specced mage with an ice staff) can be throw the keyboard (or controller, I suppose) at the wall frustration on knightmare.  Run at it, BARRIER IN YOUR FACE, attack fruitlessly, finally get through the barrier, OH LOOK IT'S TWIRLING AWAY WHILE A TERROR DEMON POPS UP UNDER YOU SURPRISE WEEEE...

Yeah.  That was evil on that dagger rogue run, too.

I did Nightmare on my first playthrough. The Pride Demon at the temple was insane, especially since I only had like four healing potions. I also didn't know how the tactical camera worked. I beat him eventually though. Like a sayjin, every defeat made me stronger.

After that, I breezed through the Hinterlands until I came across that rift in Dwarfson's Pass. The demons are level 8 and I was level 4. That was a huge challenge, but I did it eventually.

I recommend fighting higher level enemies as much as possible. The bandits for example, and all the enemies past Blackwall's hut, are level 8 or 9. Go after those. Go after the High Dragons when your level is low. That makes for a greater challenge. However, the game will cheat you sometimes by not carrying out the command you wanted or damaging you when you weren't actually hit, so it can be frustrating too.

Vanilla DA:I is easy on Nightmare for most part.  the Jaws of Hakkon DLC on the other hand is tough as nails on nightmare, i actually had my party wiped a few times which was actually quite refreshing

All the DA games on Nightmare are easy once you know which abilities to abuse. The easiest DA game I remember was actually Awakening.

On DA:O Blood Wound and Mana Clash rules them all. The strongest party is a triple mage 1 rogue party.

On DA:2 well built 2H warriors were unstoppable. Don't fall into the trap of using Aveline, Fenris tanks well by himself.

On DA:I I found in my experience actually that Rift Mage is OP. Pull of the Abyss made fights really easy and with a DPS rogue with Hidden Blades proc can down Dragons pretty fast. Against Corypheus, with a decent rogue the last phase of the battle was over in 30 seconds (Nightmare). Honorable mention: 2H Templar.

Actually I tried something now.

Still was level 11 inquisitor and 10 companions.

I reloaded a level 12 rift on the hinterlands and this time I sent Cass with charge into the middle then AOE taunt and only then I rushed with my other team members.

Then I focused fire the despair demons. Once those despair gits died the rift was easy as pie didn't need to use and potions or anything O_O

On awakening the imba op madafricking Angel of Death is nate with the bow.

Archer which spam 900 damage arrows all over the place O_O

Though my BM\AW with the new elemental AOE spec class was just standing there spamming aoes and killing everything.

DA:I definitely dropped the difficulty of the series by quite a bit.   I am looking forward to the JoH here when I am ready to start my next game, since it sounds like they brought some difficulty back with it.

Note enemies there are level 20 so u need to be at least level 18-19 to actually kill them.

Prologue Pride Demon is a joke as a rogue, and quite hard as anybody else.

A joke as a rogue, because he can stealth and disrupt rift, keeping the shades and the demon passive most of the time.

During my first Nightmare playthrought (read: my first playthrough), Haven battle was by far the most difficult. Those Red Templars just wouldn't quit. I didn't even defeat Denam, I just skipped him by finishing the loading of a trebuchet.

No, it didn't. Origins is very easy all the way through, especially since like level 6-7, when you can use Taunt-Force Field exploit. I'm no even talking about Blood Wound and Mana Clash, that made every fight a joke.

In Awakening, I din't even use any spells/talents, when I wasn't playing a mage (every companion just autoattacked) because every enemy died instantly to Rogues and Warriors.

As to DA2, the only difficulty came from wave combat and broken friendly fire. Oh, maybe the Sky Horror fight in MotA (as long as you didn't realize, how broken Tallis' ability is against him) and Corypheous fight in Legacy were difficult. The rest were just cheap.

The trick with the templars on haven fight was not fully rotate the lever. after few seconds some mobs spawn then you kill them and by so doing instead of waves of 10-12 templars you kill them in group of 2 while last group is 4-5. Denam was tough but 3 ranged + 1 melee tank made him rather simple.

Also upgraded Regeneration potion was used and only when I used all 5 I started using normal healing potions.

The pride demon is tough.  I kept losing as a warrior but beat it as a DW rogue quite easily before changing my mind and starting over and going mage.  It could have been a fluke and dumb luck, because I also tried as a warrior and had the worst time with the pride demon.  I agree though, once you get out of haven, the game is not terrible.  Occasionally if you are not paying attention you get hit by some stealthed rogue who will kill you but by and large it was not as hard as I had anticipated.
