In the vanilla game, there's only 3 fights that are really all that troublesome, aside from maybe the high dragons. The Pride demon in the prologue; the infinite spawning spiders in the Forbidden Oasis; and the fight just before the cutscene wherein you meet Coryspit.

I actually found the Pride demon pretty easy with mage, as I managed to do it on Nightmare, whereas it was almost too hard with warrior on Hard.

Envy Demon can be quite challanging as well. He's quite a bit tougher than Alexius.

And I've heard about people struggling with Duchesse Florianne, but I don't know. The only tought part of this fight for me, was fighting 4 Harlequins at once. Florianne herself is quite non-threatening - although I was over-leveled.

Try it on normal.  It really isn't that bad.  My first PT was on normal, the second was on casual.  I didn't notice much of a difference.  And I am not one of those people who play on nightmare first off.  Nor do I play super tactically or spend my time trying to maximize critical hits or stacking damage (not that there is anything wrong with that!)  I eventually worked my way up to it. I think if you are going to try to work your way up, you should pay attention to how you spec your party and look at the passive abilities.  Some of them really help you out..  On casual and even normal you don't really need to worry about what abilities are speced, but it comes much more into play on difficult or nightmare.

My last PT was mostly done on Normal, but would end up bumping it down during dragon fights. I'm going to try my next PT on normal completely to see if I can actually do it. I'm too much of a casual gamer to really care much about difficulty as I like to play just to have fun without over thinking on my part.

You might try it as a KE mage if you are into maging it up.  It's a good class to go harder with specially once you get the passive that always generates barrier on hit.  I soloed two dragons (northern hunter and highland ravager) on nightmare as a KE.  I didn't want to, but I could only revive my party so much before I gave up and just focused on the darn dragons!  A tank like Cass with templar spell purge is good too, because you can disrupt rifts.

My current PT is on casual.  Because I felt like after the nightmare run I just wanted to hit things and kill them easy peasy.  So I get it :)

new exploit I noticed.

once you reach skyhold you can open the new DLC area and get to the Avaar village and there get the new uber powerful T3 schems.

Also there are 9 schematics for helmets which are all T3 one for each character you got and one I thing for varric\Sera.

So you can craft very powerful version of the named items you get like Bull's helmet of the Inquisitor hat.

Tried it now and you can use them without level restriction.

Outside of dragons there's about 4-6 spots in the game that are difficult on NM even if you know what you're doing: Pride demon at the start (unless you cheese it), Envy demon, In Your Heart's last checkpoint, Crestwood's story rift with 4 waves, and Rage demons mixed with Terrors, the ending checkpoint, and boss in Here Lies the Abyss, and if you tackle a couple areas earlier than expected, anything with Spiders, or archers and lieutenants/bosses (end of Fallow Mire).

The issue is, most of those can be outleveled, out-geared etc.

That said, Origins was pretty easy too with a good setup.

Envy's far harder than Alexius, whose only trick is to spawn a couple rifts in the middle of battle. Alexius can be stucklocked, or knocked down with Shatter Shot/Charging Bull/Whatever, and he's only really got two things you have to watch out for (Glyphs being the big one).

update.

in my master plan for nightmare I thought to get some silverite heavy armor with guard generation for my toons but I started crestwood for the keep and then I noticed it's way too easy.

Moved in the middle of it half way through level 13 and started Emprise Du Lion.... Easy. Those templars had no chance it's a joke.

Still the same gear I crafted at haven :(

what kind of nightmare is that ?
