Permanent members:
1) Wrex: My Brogan. From the disgruntled mercenary to the chief of one of most powerful races int he ME universe, the way was long. I liked his straight- forward character as well as his vision for the krogan race. A natural born chief, true to his principles, who never got intimidated from anyone. Never could betray him in ME3. Even with my fail Shep.
2) Legion: the best written character along with Mordin. Gave the AI point of view which was missing in the equation. Full of humor, growing as character without compromising what he was or becoming more organic. Screw*d up for no reason in ME3.
3) Grunt: A lot of bias here. Grunt is for me as well as many other players, my baby. Can't count the times where he made me laugh with his comments and simple yet not simplistic vision of life. Nerd rage when I realized he wouldn't be on board in ME3. Almost cried in the Rachni Mission in ME3. Made me ROFL in the Citadel DLC. Steam rolled any opponent when I got him and Legion.
4) Garrus: yeah the space Batman. Never considered as him a bro but still one of my favourites and a pillar of Shepards team. A calm, stoic yet at first unconfident great stratege who grew up under Shepard while being simultaneously overshadowed by him/her. I'll never forget his black humour nor his comments about Jack's evolution in ME3.
5) Mordin: Maybe the best written character in the whole ME universe. An absolutely fitting specimen of the salarian race. Brilliant mind, but traumatized by the dirty war against the Krogan and his role in the Genophage inspite of his efforts to post-rationalize it and still looking for redemption. A great help for Shepard as well as a very enjoyable companion. His singing talent as well his advices for sexual relations ("Don't swallow") will stay a long time in my memories. Tragic death and very moving last instants. Never brought myself to shoot him in the back.
6) Javik: The Mass Effect Troll. As much as I found the ME3 casting absolutely terrible, I did thoroughfully enjoy Javik. Making him a DLC squademate was an awful idea. Prothean officer who lost everything in a nightmarish war, Javik, in addition of giving a capital point of view about the Protheans and what happened in the previous cycle, was also unbeatable at ruining any squaddie's mood. Hilarious in his own way, getting on the nerves of every one but i n the end pitiable, he was a great addition to the team.
7) EDI: Lost a little of her charm when transformed in a sexbot but still a great character. Her evolution is greatly conditioned by Shepard's mentoring. Enjoyed her trolling Shepard. Died along with the Geth for no reason in the red ending.
8) Tali: Also one of the pillars of Sheps team. Like the OP said, she's the the little sis. I almost never used her as squaddie but can't remember being bored in any of her missions.
9) Zaeed: That bad ass. I liked him from the get go. Terrific voice acting and very useful squaddie in combat.
10) Samara: Even if her wise monk warrior style was done to death and her code too rigid, I enjoyed every conversation with her. Nice touch from BW to make almost romanceable.Shes still one the most versatile combattants you can have in your team.
Occasional ride:
11) Liara: Never understood the hype about her. While enjoyable as squaddie, she was the most bland character in ME1 and her sudden rise to (the dark side of the) power in ME2 was far too fast and implausible. Completely overshadowed inher role of informations seeker by Traynor and EDI in the last episode.
12) Kasumi: Valuable squademate and her loyalty mission was one of the best (no daddy issue to solve) along with Liara's. A shame she didn't get more exposure in ME3. Her obsession about Jacob made me avoid her in ME2 though.
13) Jack: Warning purely emotional answer: I never liked that psycho one bit, traumatizing childhood or not. But I understood where she's coming from and highly valued her biotic skills. I also belong to the people who found that making her a teacher in the third installment was one of the most awful ideas in the long list of the ME3's awful ideas . If the writers thought she had absolutely to redeem herself, then special ops, solo missions, whatever would have been imho better suited to her. Not teaching kids.
14) James: Took Grunt's place which I can't forgive but still the best fleshed character after Javik and a very useful tank. Always on board in Priority Earth.
15) Thane: Was initially in my top 10 but I was about to write something about him, I remembered that past the first playthrough I almost never talked to him again.
16) Miranda: Meh.
Out the airlock:
17) Ashley: The religious xenophic zealot never made it past the Citadel Coup.
18) Kaidan: Mr Bland disappeared in a blaze of glory on Virmire.
19) Steve: No drama on board.
20) Jacob: Who's that?
21) Allers: Got on board on the first playthrough then discarded.
Non squaddies I'd like to get on board:
1) Emily Wong
2) a Keeper (alternative to space hamster)
3) a Collector (to troll Javik)
4) Al Jilaani (to punch out the airlock)
