When we wrote ME1, Cerberus was basically a throw-away group of pro-human radicals: a name we dropped for some side missions to play the role of villain. We didn’t even have a concept of who was running them, and we didn’t think they were that important. Obviously by the time of my Ascension novel and ME2, that had changed radically. The Illusive Man and Cerberus became central to the story and themes – that never would have happened if we had nailed everything down and refused to make changes to the story.

Drew Karpyshyn

Yeah, but the problem is they went the other extreme and didn't nail anything down. Every game was just throw stuff at wall, see what sticks. Hence the corner they were backed into. Well the corner anyway. Backing into it was EA's doing and their crap deadlines.

I'd pay if it was Drew Karpyshyn and the various character writers in ME1 and 2. I wouldn't pay a single unit of the cheapest currency if it was Walters or Hudson (I know Hudson is not technically a writer but whatever).

I still like Walters...it just seems like he didn't play to his strengths as much here.

Everything he contributed before was all the Noir-ish and urban stuff. Cops, bounty hunters, crime lords and strip bars, darkly lit places, and a Bond like Villain. And if you don't like that, he still deserves credit for Conrad Verner ;)

Maybe. But anyone that signed off on that ending (and a few other choice failures) deserves to be on the literary blacklist permanently.

I take it you're done with the series then? Isn't he lead writer (or "director") still?

Oh yeah. I was done after the EC announcement hit.

I'd like for them to just leave it the hell alone. But it's EA. They're incapable of not milking something to death.

So it's only a matter of time I guess, till they release some kind of sequel or other continuity breaker that invalidates my massive headcanon and this series goes the way of Starcraft... for me

I should've added "... for me".

I got really into the SC universe after I finished Brood War. I was fascinated with the Protoss (specifically the Dark Templar), the Xel'Naga and how that all fit together. Since I wasn't expecting a sequel and really didn't believe it'd get one as the years went by I constructed this massive headcanon about what happens next including a re-surging Protoss empire, revenge on Kerrigan then onto the Xel'Naga.

Long story short I didn't pay attention to the Kerrigan/Zerg fanboys who I think got their wish now that Kerrigan is that universe's Space Jesus. My entire headcanon is for naught and since I really don't like where the story went, in addition to the graphics and the other Blizzard bullshit, SC is pretty much dead to me. I'll still fire up Brood War when I'm up for random lolery, but that franchise is done for me.

And now it seems ME will go the same way. With SC it could conceivably be called my fault since I got attached to headcanon when they kept going on about a sequel. But ME was supposed to end. Or at least the Reaper-Shepard storyline. But since most people that express an opinion won't shut about how they only want post ME3 games and the rumors seem to go that way too, it looks like history will repeat itself.

Well, I'm hoping the Reaper story is over. I never cared that much about it.. I liked the setting itself.. there's a lot to explore there. The only reason I care about the Reapers is that they wanted to destroy the setting. Or Bioware wanted to destroy it, rather. It's like watching someone build a beautiful Lego structure... and then smashing it with a sledgehammer.

Well that's the thing about post-ME3. The setting will almost certainly change.

Since ME's strength is your choices (lol) I've always said that the minute Bioware canonizes a path, whatever it may be, I'm outta here. The ending has added a note of desperation to that. After all this bullshit, at least let us have this one final choice, crappy as it may be.

Except now if you're going into sequel land, even this is taken from us. Because either they canonize an ending (boo) or they merge it all together into an incomprehensible mess (also boo since once again, your choice is invalidated). Also I'm not even convinced they can merge, given Synthesis.

But any path you take the setting changes. So your choice is also

a) make a mess of things by merging, which changes the setting

B) canonize an ending which also change the setting, except possibly for Control if you assume the Reapers are behind the scenes only or absent, which is my favorite but even then it'll ****** off a lot of people myself incuded because I'm against canonization on principle or

c) go far enough into the future so that it doesn't matter. Which would also change the setting, otherwise it's dumb and what's the point?

And in all of these cases, you change the setting therefore, why even bother calling it Mass Effect?

I hear you... but I'm not even sure when and where the next game takes place. So I'll just wait and see.

I wanna play!

Ranked in order of love to dislike!

1.  Wrex - reminds me of my grouchy dad.  Has real depth and complexity and grows throughout the series. And he is just, plain, fun.

2.  Legion - best character introduction of all time.  Best dialogue.  I cried like a friggen baby when he dies (seriously,,,like when i was 12 and read 'Old-Yeller")

3.  Garrus - my bro, always.  In Citdel, when EDI shorts out in the car, his reaction is the funniest thing in the whole damned series.

4.  Thane - his eyes!  the memories.  The darkness.  A sexy lizard man.  His lines were like poetry (sappy poetry...but I love that crap)!

5.  Mordin - patter songs and science and redemption.  And he doesn't say unnecessary words. Love him.  Hated Bioware for killing him.

6.  Vega - one of his few fans.  Liked that we finally gotta a down and dirty human soldier.  My brother is a marine, so it was like having him along!

7.  Zaeed - i appreciate anyone who says "goddam" as much as him.

8.  Joker - funny guy with brittle bones...what's not to love?

9.  EDI - like the bob and the voice...but gets a bit tedious telling her how to be real girl...

10.  Tali - she grows up through the game, which is fun to watch.  But a little...meh for me.

11. Cortez - meh...nice guy, but no real depth

12.  Javik - Only played his DLC once, so...he may grow on me...

13.  Kaiden - in ME1, he had depth, but it kinda got lost in the next 2 games.

14.  Liara - a bit bland...but has her moments

15.  Jack - typical tortured bad girl

16.  Grunt - not as good as Wrex.

17.  Miranda - her mouth kind creeped me out.

18.  Jacob - boring

19.  Samara - boring as an old fish...prolly as stinky too...

20.  Ashley - yay...an ethnocentric who believes in heaven and likes bad poetry.  Just...great.

Yup. ;)

BW characters I hate, from the games I've played by them...

KotOR: I didn't hate any of the teammates here: The characters I used most were Bastila, Canderous, Jolee, and Carth. HK-47 was also used regularly. I didn't really hate anyone or dislike them. Worse, I was completely apathetic to them. T3-M4 was useful for hacking and splicing, and that's about it. The others were complete non-entities throughout the game. Being a completionist, I have to talk to them and get their stuff done, but that's the part that feels like a chore more than any other.

Mass Effect: As I ranked on the first page, I have a fair number of characters I dislike and despise. Tali, Ashley, Liara, and EDI being foremost. I'm no fan of Garrus or Jack either.

Dragon Age: Here's one where I'm ambiguous.

In DA:O, I don't think there was a single teammate I disliked, at least in the prime game.

For Awakening on the other hand I wasn't impressed with a lot of the members. Sigrun was a non-entity for me, Velanna was annoying (and it was satisfying to call her out on hypocrisy regarding her hate towards humans), Oghren was Oghren, and Nathaniel, Anders, and Justice were alright, if a bit uninteresting.

All other teammates from the other two DLC's are complete non-entities for me. I know them, I know their names, and I have no care at all in the world about them.

DA:II, converse to DA:O, is the game where I more or less disliked every teammate. Varric, Aveline, and Bethany were the only ones I really liked. I could tolerate Sebastian sometimes, but everyone else was just facepalm stupid. I did like Tallis though. I really want to see more of her.

DA:I I think I liked everyone but Sera. Sera is on Merrill levels of hate for me.

The only other Bioware game I've played is Old Republic. The companions there work a little differently, with their content being gated behind affection levels you'll never get because it's best to stick with and upgrade just one (usually an LI). Or you could spam gifts. So I guess....

TOR LI Rankings

1. Kira Carsen (Knight)- voiced by Laura Bailey so instant win. Feisty, sarcastic, interesting backstory.

2. Risha (Smuggler) - so your Smuggler is notHan Solo. Risha however is a complete subversion of what Leia is.

3. Nadia Grell (Consular)/ Mako (Bounty Hunter)- they're cute and endearing though with varying levels of difficulty in justifying why they'd hook up lorewise. Mako is a hacker from Nar Shaddaa who just loves hanging out with Bounty Hunters for some reason. And Nadia is a young impressionable girl from a newly discovered world who's your Padawan. At least Kira's more experienced and you're both more or less Knights. The Consular is already a Master when the romance starts.

4. Vector (Imperial Agent) - IA is the only female character I made. He's interesting to talk to though his romance gets a lot of hate for some reason.

Female LIs for the Warrior and Trooper were meh. The Inquisitor's would've been ok if your character wasn't supposed to be protoBane/Palpatine and yet they made her incorruptible. Other cool non-LI companions include:

Theran Cedrax (healer for Consular)- brilliant scientist, if a bit arrogant. Made a sentient hologram "companion" of his own. His CC is getting his hologram to er... distract enemies. Very amusing. Also like the VA, he was on an old show I used to watch when I was younger.

M1-4X (Trooper ranged tank)-  picture the robot personality from Lost in Space but psychotically patriotic. Good for laughs.

Xalek (Inquisitor Melee tank)- organic Greivous meets Darth Maul. Underdeveloped as a character but a true Sith apprentice. Badass voice to boot.

And a special shoutout to the Imperial Agent for having a team where nearly everyone is interesting:

Vector- Killik Joiner, formerly Imperial Diplomatic Service. Killiks are what you'd get if Rachni indoctrinated. Interesting perspective.

SCORPIO- EDI if she was designed by HYDRA. Or ME3 Cerberus. She only cares about self-upgrading and would kill you if not for the shackles.

Lokin- Mordin if he were a shapeshifter. Doesn't do patter however.

Temple- Force-sensitive that hid her powers because she didn't want Sith training, hid out in the Chiss military. The association alone is enough to warrant my interest.

Kaliyo- the one exception. She's a Jack wannabe, and since I'm not overly partial to the original...

*snip*

DA:I made me hate Bioware companions for the first time:

DAI redeems itself somewhat by letting me kill Hakwe.  Since Hawke is the only Bioware character that can the elicit the "hate" word from me, getting to off her was monstrously satisfying.

Oh...and KOTOR 1 and DAO...loved every single companion.  Every...single...one.

 DA:I -- 9 companions, 3 advisers ... and I liked them all.  :)

To varying degrees, of course, but there was no one I so much as disliked.

I was good with all the DA:O companions as well.

DA:I I think I liked everyone but Sera. Sera is on Merrill levels of hate for me.

Hehe, I loved Sera.

I mean, she is a nut, and I think virtually everything that she believes is idiotic...

I have a general dislike for people like her.

Uneducated upstarts who don't bother trying to understand or change their situation through anything other than brute force or mob mentality.

Then again, I am the kind of person that calls for a return to Platonian Aristocracy/Democracy.

It's sort of a, "she's an idiot, but she's my idiot" ... kind of thing.

I also like her for meta reasons. Like, her existence trolls people who are really just like her. Lots of fans (quite possibly most of them) hold very simplistic and yet very staunch views on mages and elves. And so does Sera, but her views run in the opposite direction of their own (not pro-mage, not pro-elf). So there's this enjoyable irony in watching these people get worked up over her, hehe.

Can't say there's many companions in either DA or ME I dislike too much. Most of those I do come from Awakening. I find DA2 Anders tolerable in comparison to Awakening Anders. When I first saw him he just seemed like a die hard attempt at an Alistair 2.0 and it was awful to witness. At least DA2 Anders had something of an interesting conflict with himself despite the fact he was an arse. Velanna could sod off quite frankly (though I enjoy telling her that so she's always recruited) and Sigrun is the only companion in either series I go out my way to avoid recruiting. (Well and Dog but he's forced in some playthroughs).

In ME the only characters I've ever said I could dislike are Ashley who's grown on me and ME2 Jack which is odd as I usually like that sort of personality and I actually quite like ME3 Jack.

On topic though I'd say my top 5 favourite ME companions are Tali, Garrus, Liara, Javik and Kasumi. Mordin and Miranda not far behind.

Basically, I just feel everybody has there good traits to look at.

Now I am a Garrus, Tali, Wrex, and Legion lovin' kind of gal, but every* character shines in my book!

* Please note that "every" does not include Ashley or Kaidan

Every time I play ME1 and get to Virmire, my conflict of decision is not based on who I will miss least. It's more of a, "Which character can I tolerate more to hear them whine for the rest of this game and the next two?"

Fair enough. While I think she's being rather hypocritical and disingenuous with her views, I don't inherently disagree with overall. I think she's a whacko that really needs to be knocked down a few pegs though (at the very least). My problems stem with her attitude, and her projection of her worldview.

Then again, I am the kind of person that calls for a return to Platonian Aristocracy/Democracy.

So I'm just going to be completely pedantic here, but this statement makes no sense. Plato was completely opposed to democracy; he regarded it as one of the worst forms of governance possible, just ahead of tyranny. This may have had something to do with the fact that Plato was related to two of the Thirty Tyrants (the puppet leaders who took power in Athens after the Athenians were defeated by Sparta in the Pelopponnesian War); Charmides was his uncle, and Critias was his cousin.

Anyways, returning to the thread, I've done this before, but here I go again; the ones at the top and bottom I'm pretty firm in my opinions on, but the ones in the middle I'll mix and match depending on the time of day:

Mordin

Legion (ME2)

Wrex (ME1)

Ashley (ME1)

James

Garrus

Samara

EDI

Javik

Thane

Kasumi

Grunt

Jack

Zaeed

Morinth

Liara

Jacob

Tali

Hard one, I honestly don't think I can rank them. If someone asked me which companion is better then maybe, I mean I know I like some more than others.
