Miranda is 100% up to the job. I don't know if you know what the first officer does on a Naval vessel.

Shagging the Captain in the engine room and having a potentially lethal fight with an unstable crew member?

You don't have to sleep with her in ME2. And Jack clearly went into Miranda's office looking for blood. Do you think that an unstable employee marching into the Assistant Manager's office and openly trying to start a fight is the AM's fault?

I'd say Adams. He is always on the ship, and a navy officer with years of experience.

(AFAIK) helmsmen do not command (simultaneously), neither do AI or people not on board.

ME1, Kaidan. Unofficially, of course. XO Pressly has the deck and yadda yadda.

In ME2, Garrus for ground missions, Miranda for everything else.

In ME3, back to Kaidan.

In 3 it is much harder.  Kiaden is promoted to Major and leading a ground unit and not there for much of the opening of the game.  Ashley has no bussnies being an LC and I have no idea how she got promoted from operations cheif to lieutant commander in 3-6 months so I would never leave her in charge, certinaly dosen't help she isn't around for much of the opening either.  Joker is again bound to the cockpit which prevents him from overseeing others.  Adams would be a good choice but he is need in a woefully understaffed enginering.  Vega is a marine with limited knowledge of ship operations and so not suited.  I have to go with Cortez, he is familer with ship operations and incharge of a non critical department in the flight deck so he can leave it if need be.  Only problem is he inssint on flying me everywhere so that leaves either Adams or Joker as the second officer in charge until he gets back.

At least they explained Kaidan's promotion to Major.  He's leads a SpecOp unit of biotics.  They never explained how Ashley goes from Gunnery Chief to Lieutenant Commander in 2.5 years.  That's 5 promotions in less than 3 years and the war isn't active until the Reapers attack Earth and Ashley is LC by then.

I resent her being the same rank as Shepard.  She's shown nothing to explain her 5 promotions since defeating Seran.  4 of them after Shepard talked to Anderson on the Citadel in ME2.  She's was Operations Chief in ME2.

Shepard saved Horizon, not the Virmire survivor.

I get Kaiden, I simply think he specializing on ground side operations and may not be suited to ship board operations.  And like I said he isn't around for atleast a few weeks and the Normandy needs an xo to hand out duty shifts and all the other paperwork since Shep is to busy to bother with such mundane details.

As for Ashley, I know, it's weird.  I could accept a feild promotion to second lieutenant or even first lieutenant.  But to jump stright to an O4 without any time in service lerning how to be a junior officer strikes me as some kind of polictial stunt and leves her unqualified to command anthing over a marine squad as far as I'm concerned.

Probably Garrus or Tali. Garrus is a skilled leader and Tali is a Quarian Admiral so she must have some skill at being a leader, also. Given that the Normandy is an Alliance vessel, but it's captained by a Spectre - it probably wouldn't matter what race they were from. Equally, having Tali as second in command could build diplomatic relations and the like. :)

Mass Effect 1 - Pressly

Mass Effect 2 - Garrus (self/TIM-appointed XO Miranda dies on the Suicide Mission)

Mass Effect 3 - Kaidan

ME1 : Although Pressley is the XO, I don't think he's suited for command and he seems more comfortable as a navigator. Kaidan did order him around during Ilos mission. If Bailey/Tigh was there, he would have minced Kaidan into a dough.

ME2 : Miranda made herself the XO. But I doubt her navigation skills with the Normandy. She seems more occupied writing reports than being in the CIC.. unless commanding a ship is among her super power too. If Miranda isn't up to it, since its Shepard's ship (whatever TIM) and isn't Alliance, probably between Samara and Garrus. Ask the oldest person on the ship if she handled a frigate before in her long life... if not, then ask Batman if he want the job.

ME1-Discounts Pressley because he's a navigator

ME2- Discounts Miranda because she's not a navigator.

Seems legit

That's actually a very reasonable suggestion if you're enforcing Alliance chain of command. Though from an SF nerd perspective, I'd want to say he's third in line.

lolno. Tali is as token an officer as you get. Ashley's promotion is actually more legit.

I like this primitive. She understands!

On a more serious note, in 3 I'd give the job to Garrus. He'd be more levelheaded and he's already ShepardLite.

Garrus, particularly in 2 and 3.  By 2 he's shown the utmost loyalty to Shepard and unlike Ash/Kaidan or Tali, barely questions what Shep is doing with Cerberus.  Also, unlike the VS, he takes it at face value if Shep doesn't trust Cerberus.  While he was betrayed from within during his Batman Archangel days, it's clear that he was putting his C-Sec training to good use prior to that.  It also helps that Garrus got a bit of an armor upgrade between ME1-ME2, and wasn't nearly as squishy as he had been in the first game.  With his loyalty proven once again, his ability to keep cool under pressure, and his increased leadership practice, I could think of no better squadmate to be my Shepard's second-in-command.

ME1=Pressley.  Once it got closer to the end and he lightened up towards aliens, I thought he would have made a fine choice.  RIP good sir.  <salute>

Yeah, I forgot Javik.

If anyone could fit the role in ME3, it was him.

To be fair, they're both pretty suspect. I can see Ashley commissioning.

I cannot see her holding her mid-level officer rank within a year of last being seen on Horizon.

ME1: Pressley (don't care for him though)

ME2: Miranda (the only one who's got the skills and who deserves it)

ME3: should have been Miranda again but Garrus is great too

I don't care that much for Alliance chain 'I gonna get and beat you with'. I care about 'Engineers master race'! If it wasn't Adams it would be either Gabby or Tali.

Or after taking a look at Tali's command experience death toll, reather Ken

I actually think a second in command is right to question their captain when he starts working for a pro-human terrorist organisation.

I mean, your XO should probably have at least some morals.

And given that you have a previous history with Cerberus after meeting them (admittedly, a little briefly) in the first game, I think that questioning it would be a good idea. Not to the point of disobeying orders, but questioning it a little is fine.

Regardless, having someone who works for a pro-human terrorist organisation as your XO would NOT be a good idea, regardless of whether you are working with them at that current moment or not.

Especially when said pro-human terrorist organisation is as secretive as Cerberus.

Then they'd be likely to have you just complete your task and then kill you, than being an effective XO.

Sure, that isn't the case with Miranda.

But it could have happened with anyone else.

So, not especially a good idea in the first place. :)

What pro-human terrorist organization is that? It's not Cerberus.

You can have morals and work for Cerberus.

The issue is, most of them have no context or understanding of what Cerberus is or does. They just see it and condemn it without trying to understand or rationalize it. It's absurd moralizing that also displays a lack of critical thinking. If I had an XO cast doubt on my judgment on something they had no informational context on, I'd probably fire them and get someone who can understand and look at views before casting stones.

Cerberus can be as secretive as they like. I'm fine with it. I support it. I understand why they do it. I understand what they're doing. And it's ok. Most people don't, but then again, most people aren't that intelligent either. We'd be foolish to leave ourselves tethered to the mediocrity of the masses.

I really wish we could have been more sympathetic to Cerberus in ME3. Instead, just black and white judgments that take on a personal disgust factor. I mean I'd prefer if we could highlight how Cerberus is behaving irrationally and against our interests. That's what I'm against. I don't care about their actions if it yields results. I'm ok with what happened at Sanctuary. In fact, I approve of it. Damn fine research.

Just wanted to know what teammember you guys consider to be 2nd in command on the normandy. And perhaps reason why...

was he/she the one you allways had in team, most loved, most badass, funnies lines etc.

Miranda in ME2: I may dislike her, but she is a good officer and SR2 is a Cerberus warship.

Ashley/Kaiden in ME3: The SR2 is property of the Alliance so that goes without saying.

My second in command choices are usually based on merit and loyalty, no matter my personal opinion.

Machiavellianism 4 life eh?

Personally I was a little creeped out by the whole turning refugees into Husks and augmented Shock Troopers, but hey, morality goes out the window when your foe can wage total war.

Alenko seems like the best fit to me. Completely different style than my Shep though. Good cop/bad cop?

Then the roles reverse and Miranda is the bad cop in ME2.

No, not because of the admiral title, but because she does have some leadership experience and qualities and atleast in my playthrough are open to new ideas and doesn't necessarily stick to dogma...

Her leadership casualty thing... Well, canon Shep is sole survivor isn't he? And...if he/she hadn't gotten picked off that rock, he/she would still be there... or dead now... So... meh...

As much as I love Tali's character, she is a horrible leader.

Unassertive, emotions easily compromised, and just lacks backbone; she couldn't finish the condolence letters to the families of the Marines that died on Haestrom.

As Chief Engineer; she excels, as Leader; she suffers and so do the people under her.

I don't know about command, but Space Hamster is my only real ME3 friend. Would have been nice to have him on the final run at Priority Earth. "I can't think of anyone better to have with me....."

It's fitting that he was crawling around Jack's bunk. He know what's up.
