After BioWare's Chris Priestly related to Penny Arcade's Jerry Holkins that there would be a way to tell a new game of ME2 what you did in ME1 even without your save file, I was relieved.  This was the only thing blocking me from buying the game - I don't have save files from a year ago and, as good as ME1 is, I'm not going back and playing it again for the third time and putting another 50 hours into it.
I was quite upset when, after purchasing the game on the assumption that what Mr. Priestly said was the truth, I found that, in fact, no such "summary" feature exists in ME2.  I'm not satisfied with the assumptions that ME2 makes with regard to the council and other NPCs, and I'm certainly not satisfied with the apology given for the "mix up" regarding the Penny Arcade incident.
If indeed the developers used some sort of summary feature or save game generator to test ME2's import system, could it please be made available to the community so that those of us who don't have year old save files can play the game we thought we were getting?

It was stated for at least a month that if you didn't pre load an ME1 character you would have a char with preset ME1 decisions that Bioware setup.

Also, you can play through the first ME in 15 or so hours including many sidequests which is what I did over the last 3 days so I don't know where you got 50 hours from.

You're allowed to pick certain key decisions, but there are literally hundreds of decisions in ME2 you can't pick them all. Sorry! :(

Grotty if you remember the plot of ME and the side missions well you could just download and import a character.

There are plenty to choose from on this site:
http://www.annakie.com/me/home.htm

Dont think you gotta worry about character looks, i think your able to change facial features and new class after importing a character. Dont know for sure tho except the class bit.

Wasn't it confirmed that only the testers could "pick" what happened?  the only thing that I have seen that I can change is if Udina or Anderson is on the council... which is weird because i got that dialog option on an import file but still it let me pick the exact opposite of what happened.

Ahaha I would really love a save game generator around about now, playing through ME one last time to prep my character for ME2 and god are all those planet exploration side quests tedious.

What "key decisions" other than gender, background and class am I allowed to pick?  I'm not asking for the ability to detail every little decision, such as if I mouthed off to random joe #341 on some space station in the middle of nowhere.  What I'm asking for is the ability to have major plot points taken into account - the fate of the council and my NPC followers (Wrex and Kaiden/Ashley), the result of any romance side-quest, and the fate of the major worlds that I visited in ME1.  That's about 10 major plot points, not hundreds, most with a simple either/or option.  I don't think it's too much to ask.
As for BioWare telling us that we needed our save files: when one source tells me I need them and another says I don't, who am I supposed to believe?  Both sources were official BioWare employees.  I believed that the new information was true and purchased the game based on that.  In the future I guess I'll have to try to contain my excitement in those situations.  Caveat emptor and all that, I suppose:?.

Yeah the council thing sucks. I know what choice I made and so its strange about whats going on for me in ME2.

On a good note I was able to recreate my ME1 Character in ME2 via memory. I mean I got it almost spot on too. LOL. I was impressed.

Yeah I lost my saves for the first game when my hard drive crashed. There was an announcement here that turned out to be false, and so now we're stuck with a set universe. Why not bring up a screen at the start of what Shepard did in the first game then work that somehow into the plot? Like some dude doing a documentary about the captain or something.

I would also appreciate this feature being added into the game. What was shown during the interview with Penny Arcade looked like it would work just fine. Frankly, I'm surprised it didn't make it to the final game. Is there absolutely no chance of this being added?

Here's that site.

Though I hear you can't change the name of the character. So that's a let down for me. I don't want Arnold Shepard. >___>

I got the Collectors Edition of ME2 and installed it and went to town for 45 seconds! After I realized that without my old save game the Council was dead (period) I said, "f*** this!* and ran for my ME 1 disk and am doing a quicky run through, so I can start ME 2 by this weekend, hopefully.

If a quest is tedious, why do it?

what i don't get is how a professional game developer was actually THAT mistaken about the finished game (telling the folks at Penny Arcade there was a generator)

It makes me wonder how many people who work at Bioware actually know what the finished product IS.

I did the import thing on the 360. I got a choice of all the characters I had finished playthroughs for (yeah, that was about 7...well, some of them went through twice and were level 59.) I got the same exact looks (weird, now), class, paragon/renegade leaning, plus saved the council, put Anderson on it, and it recorded who survived Vermire. (sp?)

For the trouble (which seemed pretty seamless to me), I got to start at level 3, with some resources and some gold.

I'm pretty sure that Casey Hudson said that at a point early in the game Shepard is asked a bunch of questions relating to the state of the Galaxy (ostensibly to test his memory), including the fate of the council and other major decisions. This is where you choose the most important decisions. Also, if you DID import your save and you answer the questions in a different way to what actually happened, they correct you :)

They won't correct you on the council choice, because that was never saved in ME1. Due to a bug or something, the final playthrough save happened before that choice was made, hence why you can choose a completely different choice in ME2.

Are you sure? Have you played it? I definately remember Casey saying that, so if it's not in there then it must have been changed. I'm sure the game was gold by the time he said that, though.
