Heyas, been thinking of getting a console. I'm far too used to mouse/keyboard though, so the question is, do any of you use m/k for ME3MP?

If so which console, and more importantly, if any of you have played both PC and Console with m/k are there any distinct differences? My main worry is that even with m/k it won't (Edit, forgot to finish this) it won't react the same.

What's your experience in general with a m/k on a console? I've played plenty of console games are friend's places with controllers but not a one uses an adapter with m/k.

At this point I'll have to dump a significant amount into my PC but in the interim I've been seriously considering getting an xbone. Last time I owned a console was when I had an N64 and a Sega Genesis though.

The idea of starting a new manifest when I'm only 14 UR's from completion on my PC is a bit, uhm, depressing. Also might prove a fun challenge and add some longevity to it though.

/shrug

Dunno yet, still pricing things, but trying to get a good idea beforehand.

Cheers. :)

IDK how such precision controls are going to mesh with a console. No idea honestly though. I would embrace the controls on whatever console you choose.

For some games yes, notably Assassin's Creed. I started it on a console and then bought it for myself on PC. I enjoyed it more on console, the game seemed well designed for a controller. More fluid. But for ME3MP and FPS's in general (Borderlands for instance) I'd want m/k or I think I'd go nuts trying to make headshots.

Having played both PC and Wii U, the consoles run at a much lower frame rate which means that the speed of the game is a touch slower on consoles.  I theorize this will translate to whatever pointing device you may end up using (mouse/keyboard).  The console releases were built around the primary input device for the machine so I wholeheartedly suggest you simply embrace the controller on consoles.  It'll feel different than on PC, that much I can say.

Console shooters are designed with console controllers in mind. Everything from the default thumbstick sensitivity, to how much auto-aim there is, will be baked into the game. (At least for well designed games. Please don't give examples of shitty console shooters with terrible settings; that's not the point.)

I would imagine that using a mouse/keyboard on the console will be... odd.

You are better off adjusting the in-game settings to meet your needs. For example, almost all console shooters allow you to increase/decrease sensitivity, turn on/off auto-aim (some even let you control the AMOUNT of auto-aim). I think this would be better than trying to use m/k on a console.

Some controllers with a mouse-keyboard design and described as "special FPS" by the manufacturer are on sale for the PS3, so I guess that the m/k combo can work well for this console and probably better than the standard controller. I never tried myself though.

Also, are Xbox360 games usable on Xbox One ? PS3 games can't be used on PS4...

ME3 Console Warning:

You can't look around while running.  You cannot use Medigel to reload cancel either.

You have been warned.  Looking around while running is a crutch anyways...

Playing with kbam adapters is iffy, as you'll be locked at the game's sensitivity and you won't really get the enhanced precision of the mouse because turning speed doesn't scale as well as you'd hope (since the console thinks you're using a thumbstick). You can definitely make it work, it's just an issue of getting everything functioning and getting adjusted to how it feels.

No.

So he will have to buy a Xbox 360 if he wants to play ME3 on consoles. Buying an old-gen console doesn't sound like a great investment to me.

To the above.

Oh. I figured they were backward compatible.

Oh geez.

Thx for the answers all. That definitely wasn't something I took into account. Good to know though. Argh. Tough sinking another $1500-$2000 into my system but it really needs it.

Just don't, trust me PC gaming is always a generation ahead. Mouse/Keyboard is always better in all kinds shooters and you almost always can use any controller on PC if you want to. I had PS3 and Xbox 360 last gen and they collected a lot of dust and this gen I bought a PS4 and it is doing the same except the PS4 Dualshock controller which I use on PC for some games that just work better with a controller like Fighting and Driving games.

Most of the console games are locked at 30 FPS and they look far worse than the PC versions of the same games. You also pay more for the inferior versions on the games on consoles.

The worst thing is no backwards compatibility with previous generation's games on the new consoles and all your digital purchases will go to waste in 3-4 years time when new consoles arrive eventually.

You have been warned stay away from consoles, PC gaming is the future, console gaming is the past.

In case you did not know ME3 is not playable on Xbox One or PS4.

I got the PS4 for Uncharted 4 and it got delayed to 2016, I am now seriously considering selling my PS4 because I do not like to keep stuff that I do not use and I won't be getting an Xbox One ever.

Buying an old-gen console doesn't sound like a great investment to me.

The contrary position is that old-gen consoles are increasingly cheap, they have immense game libraries, the games for them are still readily available used (and cheap) (or if you've been on XBOX Games With Gold they keep giving you free games), and the player base is still big enough that big-time AAA titles are still being made for old-gen consoles (exhibit A: Rise of the Tomb Raider will be for both XBone and XBOX 360).

Rise of the Tomb Raider is a timed exclusive it will release on Xbox One and Xbox 360 in 2015 and on PC and PS4 in 2016.

Yes, that's the point. There is still a big enough old-gen install base to make it worthwhile for games to release on them. At least for a little while longer.

Nope. The biggest games won't be coming to last gen consoles and that reason alone is why it is time to dump the old consoles. Batman Arkham Knight, The Witcher 3, Star War Battlefront, The Division, and most importantly Mass Effect 4 will not be coming to Xbox 360 and PS3.

To answer the OP, mouse and keyboard adapters for console games that were meant to be played with a controller work about as well as controller adapters for PC games that were designed to use keyboard and mouse.

On the downside, realistically, if you want to play ME3 on Xbox, it will cost you about $150 or $200 for the current Xbox 360E, which comes with headset and wireless controller. A physical copy of ME3 for Xbox 360 is about $5 most places I've looked.

On the upside, you've managed to troll FTFTL into another thread where he can berate us all as fools for not spending a few thousand dollars on a high end PC to future proof our gaming investment :D

somehow i knew this was going to be a "pc are great" thread. no matter how many times i tell people they just can't accept the fact that in games where you can turn autoaim off and adjust sensitivity i can shoot better with a controller than incan with a mouse

Yes I guess that the Xbox 360 can be bought at a very interesting price in a second-hand store, and some old games for less than 10€. But I don't know, buying an old-gen console for a guy who comes from PC, while knowing that most of the biggest hits of the next months won't be released on PS3 and XBox 360 (some games in the last months like Assasins' Creed 4 were already new-gen exclusive)...That doesn't sound great to me.

I believe you can shoot better with a controller than a mouse.

The only problem is I can't ;)

Interestingly developers in ME2 had to take into account console controller's greater time-debt when creating the various difficulties for the ME2 minigames, specifically Bypass. My roommate had ME2 on Xbox, and we had it on PC. Bypass on Xbox had 4 matches to complete, whereas it took 6 on PC(iirc on Hardcore/Veteran). We asked a friend that worked on ME2 in Edmonton about it, he's the one that talked to us about time-debt and those mechanics they had to build around. Shame he's a **** but oh well. :D
