I do not know how to describe it using words, but a majority of all male videogame main characters all share that same.....sound when it comes to their voice. That sort of grizzly voice that I guess is supposed to make them seem more tough but many times comes across as phony and lame. I am going to list a few characters that all share this same sound.

Aden - Watchdogs

Solid Snake/Big Boss - Metal Gear series

Master Chief - Halo

Adam Jenson - Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Gerult - The Witcher series

to name a few....

I guess the best example I can give is to go look at Snake Plissken from Escape from LA/New York and listen to his voice and you'll get a better audio example of what I am talking about. Basically, that type of voice seems to be the stock voice for male videogame protagonist and it is very annoying. This is what I liked about male Shepard as he didn't have that stock voice and yet his voice was still masculine and commanding.

So what are your thoughts on this? Do you want our male hero in ME4 to have the stock male videogame voice or something more unique?

I think the voice should reflect the type of character in which BioWare chooses to put us. If they give us a less defined character (essentially a blank slate like the Warden), I think a stereotypical everyman/action hero voice would be appropriate. It might not be very unique, but a generic voice is less likely to alienate the player. On the other hand if BioWare gives us control of a more emotionally defined character like Geralt, I'd like to see them give us some interesting voice talent.

However, I think the best course of action would be to iterate upon DA:I's multiple voices. Rather than have 3 different people read the same lines, maybe BioWare could gives us 2-3 voices with varying degrees of emotion, eloquence, mannerisms, etc. We could choose between a "royal" character who enunciates perfectly and consistently or cowboy-ish type who ain't afraid to toss 'round a few colloquialisms. It would be more work, but I think the ultimate effect would be fun.

Regardless, I've never been particularly annoyed by a protagonist's voice. So long as he or she can act, I'm fine with them.

I think being annoyed was a poor choice of words on my part. I think I was just less....immersed into the character so to speak. As soon as the character starts speaking and I begin to hear the stock voice, I become detached from the player as the suspension of disbelief is failed as I equate the character to being just another corny male videogame character with no inspiration behind him other than he is "supposed" to be some dudebro bada$$. This is why again I am brought in more to characters who have more varied voices like male Commander Shepard or even John Marston from Red Dead Redemption. Their unique voice adds to their character. When I hear the stock voice, I automatically come to the conclusion that the developers didn't even try to give this guy some personality....as if we are supposed to just take it at word that this guy is "cool" and we should care about him.

So no, I am not annoyed by the stock voice, I am just less immersed.

If the voice actor does his job as well as Mark Meer, I won't care about his voice being a "stock" one :)

Two things:

1)I would love a choice of 3 voices, ending up 6 due to gender. I know that's a ton to ask for, but I have my reasons for wanting it.

2)If this isn't a thing, then I'd want much more drastically different tone options in conversations. Let me not just be 'Shepard', but instead a variety of types of characters. This was a problem in DA2 where tone shifted drastically, but I like to hope that a more cinematic (heh I hope it'll still be) game series like Mass Effect can figure out to present things more fluidly.

Basically, I want 3 paths, and I want them to all be more emotive than Shepard. I want to explore the roleplay more. I want to witness the spectrum of personality to some degree, not be constrained more to 'paths' that encourage me relatively more to go one way or bust. ME3 changed this a bit, but only a bit, and it has its 'Shepard-Autodialogue' aspect that I don't hate as much as others (I think to think it had a purpose for Bioware), but I don't want to see happen as much again.

I want things to be more real. And yes, I'd like less 'basic action hero' going on. Shepard somewhat subverted it in ways, but he also largely embodied it. Lets be more than that.

I didn't mean to imply a negative connotation. I sympathize with your viewpoint completely.

The less reliance there is on the white male action hero with short dark hair and a gritty voice as a standard, the better. I'm overly enthusiastic about hearing the same old voice, but I can see why games perpetuate the trope. A lot of gamers are either white males or are accustomed to that action hero image, and I think it's reasonable that a game company would default to that archetype for the sake of a relatable avatar.

I agree, it does come off as lazy design, but for a player character, it might actually be better if he or she doesn't have a distinct personality. While I much prefer my protagonist to have his own feelings, others may want a cliche voice to blend into the background.

For what it's worth, when I head that Jensen's VO was doing work on the Next Mass Effect, I immediately hoped that he wouldn't voice the protagonist. With Witcher 3, Batman: AK, and whatever other games Troy Baker and Nolan North are in coming out, it I may get pushed over the edge.

While I love much of the media of the 70s-90s (action hero focus I mean), times are changing, and I think developers should feel free to experiment with protagonist voices and characterizations.

We've went through our white male action hero phase. We had a lot of shooters. Okay.

Lets do some other stuff. Even in our shooters.

There's such an untapped variety that just may take hold in an audience and create a smash hit.

I agree that I don't want Jensen's VO as protag in Mass Effect. I really hope it doesn't happen, even if he alters it. I don't want the franchises so confused. Have him even a party member of some sort, okay sure, but not protagonist.

I want my hero to sound commanding and masculine but also uncertain at times and with a bit of feminine emotion and sensitivity...

This is news to me, when and where was it confirmed that he will be doing VO for ME4?

They certainly share the same tone. But to say they are completely identical is a bit harsh.

David Hayter's voice is amazing. You take back your slander against Snake.

I, for one would be completey happy with SnakeShep. Or Shep Nukem, considering that I made an anti alien broshep who looked just like the Duke once. The more one liners, the better. Pick paragon options if you wanna sound like a sappy wussbag.

Depends on the hero. Sometimes it actually works to have the generic, stiff jawed, good guy who's voice screams 'chiseled good looks' (Batman games) my opinion is that it only really works for iconic characters. Whatever/whoever they go with I hope they reflect the games atmosphere as best they can that's the most important part for me.

I dont really care for the voice actor

what i care for is not giving the new hero a face like shepard ( the reason why i couldent create my own shepard was because they already had a default one so i always saw him as the real shepard)

so in this new game i hope we get is a masked hero ( as default) so we can create our own with good countions. :)

Yeah, I really hope that the next game doesn't have some celebrity look-alike default for the PC. But, considering that the next game will be a great deal more refined than the old ME series, with better texture and such (though probably bad hair lol), that seems like it would be a little pointless anyway.

Not sure what the others sound like but I really liked the voice acting of Geralt and Adam Jensen. Who knows, perhaps if they do what they did in DA:I there could be a choice of voice actors. I think a Geralt or Jensen voice could be good for a Human, Turian or maybe even a Krogan.

A medium to low pitched voice that's slightly to very grovely. I tried looking up a super cut, but didn't come up with anything. Just google the characters that the OP mentioned and I'm sure you'll hear the trend.
