I hope our male hero doesn't that that stereotypical videogame male voice.

A medium to low pitched voice that's slightly to very grovely.

I think the point was it isn't just a "video game" voice. What you describe is quite a high percentage in most western male populations. You look at well known male actors and orators and I think it would be even higher. It's definitely not unusual or reserved to computer games, especially at the softer end of the range.

So the problem is that most human male characters sound like... most human males, so you want something like this as the new PC voice:

Am I understanding this correctly?

Adam Jensen was good, but I think just for that game.  Of course, who knows, he could come up and surprise us all.

I do understand what you mean, but Meer just sounded kind'a off to me.  Always chose the Hale character, unless I knew ahead of time who I was gonna be romancing and the option wasn't there for Hale.  But I do empathize with what you're feeling.

It would kind'a put me off as well to have a low speaking gravely voice.

"Male Japanese : Konnichiwa"?

You guys obviously never watch Asian stuff much.

I reckoned there will be more "Bukkurosu~" "Shi-neeeyo!!" with Zaeed's attitude. Yeah. I can imagine them alright. Then again, that's exactly what I'd expect the Renegade BroShep would do...

Well, there's nothing sexier than a guy or gal with a Scottish or Irish accent! They need more love in video games.

Well, male Shepard didn't have a 'stereotypical male voice', so I think it'll be fine. Except when he finds research stuff in ME2, but femShep does that too. :P

If anything, I thought maleShep sounds a little nasal sometimes.

I don't think anyone meant to imply this was purely a videogame problem, and I didn't mean to imply that it much of a problem at all. As I said, I don't particularly care as long as the VO artist can act, but you can't blame a guy for wanting a bit of variety in his media.

So the problem is that most human male characters sound like... most human males, so you want something like this as the new PC voice:

Actually, videogame voices have a tendency towards a hyper-masculine tone. Out of all the guys I see on a daily basis, none of them sound nearly as grovely and tend to stay towards medium end of the spectrum. A lot of these videogame voices lean a bit too close to Christian Bale's Batman for my taste.

But you have a point which I agree with: it's totally fine to have a voice that aligns with the action hero norm. Generic, by definition, is less likely to alienate anyone.

I'm not looking for an absurd voice, but one with a more interesting cadence or some distinguishing quirk.

I really don't like most of the Bioware male protagonist voices.

Hawke, both Inquisitor, Shepard, Sith Inquisitor, Imperial Agent, Jedi Consular all suck.

Bounty Hunter and Jedi Knight is ok.

Smuggler is good.

Trooper is awesome.

I hope they'll finally get another awesome male voice for ME4, because so far I'm not impressed.

All they have to do is get Matt Damon to voice the male protagonist and Emily Blunt for the female. Such a thing would probably bring peace on Earth and cure cancer.

I get the feeling that it wont matter how the male character will sound, the worshipers of the female version will just spew the same amount of bile and hate regardless.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I will promise to buy every single thing Bioware releases, until I die, if they just, for once, give me natural looking hair.

I cannot deal with these plastic wigs anymore. DA:I is an abomination in this regard. You can completely mash up the skull and the hair stays in the EXACT same place. They force the skull into the haircut, instead of letting the hair flow around the skull.

It's unspeakably bad. And for a game that has the grass move in the wind, and leafs on trees and all that jazz, it's just absolutely ridiculous.

Please, Bioware. I have almost reached a point where I won't pre order ME4, which was pretty much a given before I dealt with that abomination of a CC in DA:I.

The hair's just one part... there's also the awful lighting, the unnatural placement of ears to avoid clipping with the hair, if at all possible, because with some skull structures certain haircuts are impossible to do without clipping your ears. The inability to look at your character in a y-axis, which will obscure some faults. Overal, even though it's miles better than any CC they did before, it's just not good enough for end 2014/beginning 2015

Massive derail, I know, but the voice acting is, in general, excellent in Bioware games. The hair is awful, and for a game that looks as awesome as DA:I it just bugs me immensely.

I think BioWare's voice actors are really good. As for the hair... we all know the characters love hair gel... it is the logical explanation.

There's a lot of great male voice actors in Bioware. Nicholas Boulton was great as Hawke and he's great in Priority : Earth. Harry Hadden-Paton as Male Inquisitor. Fenris. Varric. They're also in Mass Effect too. And a lot of Bioware's voice actors are theater, tv/movie actors, tv commericial actors and even audiobook narrators. Its more about talent than whether its female vs male. And yeah, I would have preferred for Shepard to have a choice of accent. I'm not sure Mark Meer could handle that though but I'm very certain Jennifer Hale would do British Shepard voice flawlessly. I always thought Bastilla as Renegade Shep... very bitchy.

I like men who speak in deep voices and I hope BioWare and the industry in general continues to use them.

So let me get this straight just because some people prefer the female voices over the male voice it gives you the right to be a total Dbag about it?

I would like it if it was similar to DA:I where there was perhaps 2 or 3 voices to choose from for each gender.

Did I say all the fans were like that? No, no I did not. That does not take away from the fact that a lot of the fans of the female option constantly **** on the male option, does it? They constantly spewed bile on MaleShep at every available opportunity, and it even happened to a lesser extent to Male Hawke from DA2. Is this true of all fans? No. But it is true of a lot of fans. So please, dont twist my words again.

Im not a fan of that kind of voice myself, I much prefer voices types like Male Hawke from DA2, and the British voice option for the male Inquisitor.

I think the Inquisitor voice (British at least) shows that Bioware is at least beginning to start to try something else. Hawke had a bit of difference to him, sure, but largely what one would expect, just in a more fantasy world.

But I'd welcome more. Look, I don't have anything against the 'stereotypical videogame male voice'. Cool. Some people have it IRL. It projects something of heroic masculinity. Cool. Okay.

But come onnn, there's more than that! There's so many different but still potentially widely appealing accents. There's so many vocal tones that could draw in players even more. There's so many more character types that I'd love to play, and other voices that would facilitate those character types!

I was alright with the American Action Space Soldier deal (at least it was relatively so) in the trilogy. I wouldn't mind if we still have options to sound like that or at least behave more like that in conversations. I just think we can be something else, and indeed more than the typical.

Even Shepard himself didn't 100% conform to the stereotype so I'm not super fussed. I just think I want something else. Maybe a voice that conveys more intelligence (it wasn't just the script that made some think Shepard wasn't too smart, but the voice IMO), or a voice that is more willing to express joy or curiosity. Shepard gets there a bit, especially in more optional parts of ME3, but I'd like a new voice to fit a new character that orients themselves more towards the exploration theme that the next game seems to include. Even ME1's 'exploration' was in the context of a 'race', even ME2's 'exploration' was in the context of 'acquiring tools'. I think we'll experience a shift, and I'd like the protagonist voice to be part of that shift. A shift that I welcome, even if I don't want all elements of the Shepard trilogy to be gone (I still would love a more assertive and militaristic tone as an option, either/both in the voice options like Inquisition or just conversations).
