I hope our male hero doesn't that that stereotypical videogame male voice.

Vin would be better if he wasn't so damn nasally. He does have bits that can sound either/both tough but also compassionate. Ultimately very 'grunt'ish though, and again I don't want that for the next game. Vin-ish at his best isn't something I'd automatically oppose though. He can do good... sometimes.

Who is the guy that played Arishok in Dragon Age II? His voice is badass.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a "stock voice".

I have been thinking and i think i know who could be the perfect voice ( for the new male hero)

i dont know his name but he is the voice actor who did batman in arhkam origin and Chris redfield in resident evil 5/6 ( and revelations 1 i guess)

i think he could be a awsome voice for our new hero.

but thats just me.

The guy who voiced Chris Redfield is Roger Craig Smith.  Besides Redfield and Batman, he was also the voice actor for Ezio Auditore in the Assassin's Creed series.

And on that note, I'm in complete agreement with this idea.

Do you mean Vin diesel? because when you were mentioning the grunt'ish part all I could think about was Groot and how awesome that would be. I'm sorry ignore my ramblings.

Yep Vin Diesel. By gruntish I meant more 'dumb soldier' and I think I have enough 'grunt' with Grunt (the krogan).

I wouldn't mind if he did play a secondary character though.

What you are making reference to is known as "The Dark Knight Syndrome." It is a phenomenon in which the main protagonist thinks he's Batman, so he puts on a grizzly, muzzled voice to try and sound like a tough, brooding, anti-hero/vigilante. It's something that has become increasingly popular as many seem to identify with a more darker and unforgiving storytelling rather than what is traditionally seen.

Personally, I don't mind it as long as it makes sense and the voice actor does a great performance for the game. Mark Meer was a fantastic voice for Commander Shepard. He had range, flexibility, and was able to inject humor, seriousness, and drama in every fold throughout the experience. If it does bother you that much, I'd recommend playing Mario (stereotypical Italian plumber voice) or Legend of Zelda (no voice) to balance out TDKS.

As others have pointed out. I think the answer to all of this to provide choice. Two minimum but preferably three. It adds so much replayability.

Saying that, I need a deep option for my main playthrough. I have a deep voice IRL and if I'm doing a self-insert (which I always do the first playthrough), I can't be sounding like a pip-squeak.

Also, and I've said this in other threads, if they do an English voice, I can't be sounding like a toff. I'm English IRL and I can't stand Received Pronunciation. I don't know if people from other countries can hear it but Nicholas Boulton (Hawke) is quite posh but Harry Hadden-Paton (Inquisitor), godson to the Duchess of York, alumnus of Eton, is unbearable to me. I'd rather sound like Zaeed although that might be going too far in the other direction.

I can't have everything I want but I like the idea of Irish. I'd prefer Northern Irish - a tough Belfast accent. Most people probably wouldn't be able to understand it though.

As for Mark Meer, I thought he was a little wooden in ME1, got better in 2 and was fantastic in 3 so I guess I'm definitely in the camp of having a protagonist with a personality. I thinking the ability to act its the most important thing overall. I believed Shepard whether he was being tough or sentimental. He didn't come across as sounding  like a typical jarhead. I don't even think Vega came across that way even though that's what you were initially supposed to think of him. I think FPJ did great in that role. Iron Bull... not so much.

I agree that EliasTouflexis' Adam Jensen and Cristian Bale's Batman sound similar and the acting is similar too. OP is right that it's hard to describe without doing an impression of it. It's this sort of stoic, gravelly, mystery-man voice that doesn't like to show emotion or vulnerability but deep down you know he's been wounded by his past. It sounds kind of affected to me like they're trying to sound like a cowboy or outlaw or be sexy in a James Dean Rebel Without A Cause way. I'm not sure I'm a fan.

Do you want our male hero in ME4 to have the stock male videogame voice or something more unique?

What about Gunner Wright (Isaac Clarke) voicing the next protagonist? His voice work is pretty amazing.

The guy who voiced Sam Fisher in the last Splinter Cell was very good. He had a cold, stoic voice.

The raspy, gravely voice?  Yeah.  Kind of played out.  I think that would wear on you in a game that's huge! Given the protagonist VOs we've had in Mass Effect and Dragon Age, I wouldn't expect to hear Dirty Harry any time soon.

Michael Ironside, he was also in Total Recall.

Vin Disel harnessing his inner Groot would definitely fit as a Krogan squad mate.

Not an expert on British accents but I agree completely, his voice didn't really fit the role of a strong male lead.

Yes, the voices sound like something a 5 year old boy would make when he is playing with action figures and making them "talk".

This is why I cannot get immersed into male characters who speak like that as I find it very adolescent.

I liked him as a VA, but then my Inquisitor was also from the human noble background. He's supposed to sound slightly aristocratic.

He would probably work less well as a Dalish, Qunari, or dwarven PC.

I chose Jon Curry for my human Inquisitor because he sounds like a man.

I am just happy when the voice actor can do emotion without overdoing it.  I loved femShep, and the voice actress is amazing.  But...don't throw anything at me...i actually prefer to play the male shepherd because his voice is more subtle.  When he conveys emotion, he does it in a more stoic way that I find appealing.

But the thing is...it fits the character that I want him to be. I wanted a more stoic commander. And I absolutely loved that he had that little bit of a Canadian accent (or maybe it's Minnesotan?...I am an American hillbilly, so i can't really tell the difference). :P There was definitely personality there, but it was not overdone. To me, that voice is just...well...it's Commander Shepard!  And so many of the other voice actors in Bioware games have been so amazing.  Cullen, Alistair, Zevran, Morrigan, Wrex, Thane, Vivenne!!  Think of how different all those voices were, and how those actors OWNED those characters!  I think Bioware folks know what they are about when it comes to getting good voice actors.  I have only been disappointed by some of the voicework in DA2, but there was still some good stuff in that as well.

On the flip side, I could not play the Witcher because I could not get into the character.  That voice...it was just so..I don't know...fake sounding.  I could not relate to the character at all because of it. But oh well...there are plenty of other games to enjoy.

Anyway...what is my point...oh yeah.  I think Bioware has a really good track record for getting really good voice actors in their games. If it is a Batman vengeance-ridden voice, that is fine...if it fits the character.  If I am playing a tormented, grizzled old warrior, then bring it on!

I would also like more accents as well in general in the whole game. It would make the game world feel bigger to have many different regions of the world hinted at by running into humans with many different accents, i think.

I think he lost that Canadian/Minnesotan thing in ME3... And Meer sounds this way in interviews now too.
