I typically just go for staff blade upgrades that increase Magic or Wisdom.
Is there any benefit from increasing other stats (e.g. barrier damage, etc.)? I mainly ask this as the staff blades with these stats look better ("cooler")....

In general offensive slots > utility slots > defensive slots.
For offensive slots:
leather > cloth > metal
For utility:
cloth > leather >> metal.
This means I prefer the hilted staff grip with its 8 offensive leather and 3 offensive cloth slots. I like the dragon staff blade with 6 offensive leather and 3 offensive metal as well. This is because I work to max out crit chance. I put dragon webbing in offensive cloth if I am working on end-game gear. If I haven't been lucky with schematics I use the split staff grip and battlemage staff blade. I also prefer the seer staff for its offensive leather slots.
I will normally spend some time farming Valammar chests to get the seer staff schematic.
B)I just found the sprit rune schematics in a cave by the Elf camp. Making other upgrades also helps.
