I'm currently using Vivienne as a support role namely casting barriers, reviving falling squad members and protecting weaker ones such as my archers but I've never crafted any armor or weapons on my previous playthroughs so I'm unsure of the best schematic and materials that would be best any idea's would be appreciated

You'd think Vivienne's thick skin should be enough armor, eh!

Basically, you would want to craft something that your main mage character would want to equip. Seer Staff with as many of Great Bear hide as possible -with sufficient upgrades to boost up her crit chance and crit damage- and the mage armor -with arm and leg upgrade of course- with as many utility slots as possible and some guard on hit masterwork material. With those, your KE(Vivienne in this case) is simply undying, and able to destroy literally everything on your way. She's gonna be always the last one standing among your party. Enjoy.

The Mage Schematics perk gives you good early-mid game armour, which you can improve as you get better crafting materials, and also improve the arms/legs which improves the armour quite a bit.

If you want to skip ahead (and break immersion a bit), go to the Hissing Wastes canyon merchant, and get the battlemaster mage schematic + arms & legs. Now you can craft very good mid-late game armour, and upgrade as you get better crafting materials.

As for the staff - I typically give my support/second mage (I play a mage myself), the staff type that works best for the coming battle - I'm specifically talking dragons here - so that ice opposes fire, etc. I usually use a epic (e.g. Blizzards Path, Grand Enchanter, etc.) staff for them, augmented with crafted grip/staff blade. This worked very well on normal, and so far on hard seems to do the trick as well.

As for my mages - I went a slightly different approach - I specialized every mage into a different role, so I can pick best suited for the encounter:

I have Solas as a general MQ support role - Spirit/Fade/bit of other stuff > as he can the revive others

I have Vivian as KE/Ice - suits her personality and roles against fire dragons

I have Dorian as Fire/Necro - suits his personality and background story, and helps against non-fire dragons.

So many things can work in this game.

It doesnt realy matter, get the spirit blade skill and guard fade silverite mastework slot material and thats it, you won DA:I

Iam using Battlemaster Armor with 4-hit Hidden Blades and Seer staff with Gain 5 Guard on hit, basically god mode. Sad but true

For K-E armor I just go with heavy armor for Warriors crafted with Silverite so that mages (and rogues) can wear it - I think the Tier 3 Battlemaster schematic that you purchase in the Hissing Wastes is pretty good. Even if Vivienne is in a support role you want her to be able to take a licking. Don't forget to add good arm / leg attachments which boost stats.

For staves I think the strongest Tier 3 stave you can purchase is at the Emprise du Lion merchant once you've taken the Keep. There are other Tier 3 stave schematics out there, but they are drops / War Table rewards. Make sure to put a good rune on it ("Master" or "Superb" level) and a good staff grip / blade which boost magic power.

As for Masterwork slots (on the stave and armor), I usually go with:

- Fade-touched Obsidian / Silverite - gain Guard on hit. Will make your K-E pretty much invincible, since s/he'll be generating both Guard AND Barrier constantly.

- Fade-touched King's Willow Weave - magic+30 on kill - a nice boost to spells after an enemy is killed.

You might also consider a Fade-touched material which reduces mana / stamina usage for spells.

Agreed. My KE (elf) always wears the keeper robe with fade-touched Silverite (5 guard on hit) and the fade-touched Plush Fustian Velvet (5-hit hidden blades) in the staff + Storm skill tree as the base in addition to specialization tree. She basically shreds her enemies like tissue paper. Though, I personally prefer the First Enchanter Staff over the Seer Staff.

I'm all about the Battlemage Armor for the utility slots.  You don't need better armor rating on a KE because it doesn't factor in to your barrier which you always have.  I use corruption Staff with focus on attack % over crit  chance because it is the end all be all stat for mage DPS increase.  Use critical crafting on the staff and the hidden blades chance on hit with the armor.  Energy barrage will practically guarantee a proc.   Combine that with a qunari using vitaar and your mage is your main damage dealer. Staff has 85 base dmg, 63% attack and 12 % crit chance.  Add the rune of choice and factor in arishock's vitaar and you cannot get a better dps setup for a mage.  You can change to the guard masteerwork instead if you really feel like you have surviveability issues though.  I would swap it for the hidden blades proc on the armor.

I buy the superior battlemage armor at the black emporium. I use the fade touched silverite, when hit, gain 5 guard

I purchase the staff of corruption from the black emporium that gives 56% attack. I have fade touched pushed fastion velvet. It has a 10% chance for hidden blades, 5 added hits

I use the legs and arms schematice I purchased at the merchant in the Hissing Wastes

Nitpick but this armor isn't available at the black emporium, only the Hissing Wastes merchant can sell it.

Pretty sure I saw it there yesterday. I'll go back and check. Once you reach a certain level (maybe 19) it shows up at the Black Emporium. I'll confirm later today.

I will correct myself and say I got the superior battlemage coat at the black emporium.

The armor I purchased at Hissing Wastes is the Sturdy Battlemage armor

Superior Battlemage armor from short list perks at the hissing wastes merchant is probably the best.  I am currently using the coat instead because RNG sucks and I haven't had time to get it yet on this play through. You can also grab the best arm and leg upgrades at that same merchant (at least for mages).

Also, although the Jaws of Hakkon DLC on nightmare made this build a little more difficult, I recommend going the crit crafting masterwork on the staff for better dps and hidden blades on the armor (same reason).  Only time I need guard on hit masterwork was due to the barrier dispelling attacks of mages in jaws of hakkon.

Superior Armor is available at the Black Emporium. You need the short list perk and you need to be a certain level- I think it's level 19.

The Superior Battlemage Armor Schematic cannot be bought at the Black Emporium. You can only buy the Superior Battlemage Mail Schematic and Superior Battlemage Coat Schematic there.
