Hey guys, I'm kinda new to RPGs so I'm not very good at them, I'm level 10 at the moment playing as a mage, and can't find any good armor or staff, where can i obtain schematics to build them? Also when I travel to the merchant in Val Royeaux, it doesn't give me the option to buy the fire resistance tonic or any of the other. P.s I haven't unlock Skyhold yet.

The best schematics (both armor and weapons) you can get before Skyhold can be bought in Val Royeaux past the tavern, up the stairs to the left. These are pretty expensive, though. Some good schematics can also be found as loot (such as the 2H sword in the Fallow Mire).

As I recall, you can only get resistance tonic recipes after you get to Skyhold.

Farming tier 3 weapon and armor schematics is also an option but it's not something everyone want's to do, especially if you prefer to go with the pace of the game, instead of feeling too overpowered so early on. Of course, one can also farm only tier 1 or tier 2 schematics, as well, instead of bying them/not having if enough money to buy them.

Later when you have unlocked the Hissing Wastes you should probably travel there. On that map are a few hidden tombs which contain a lot of tier 3 schematics.

This:

Spoiler
helps you finding them if you are too lazy to look for them yourself.

The Hissing Wastes are a pretty high level area though so you want to be careful going there.

There's also a dwarven merchant in Redcliffe who sells schematics that may not be the highest tier but should be pretty affordable in this stage of the game.

It is high level - you'll come upon level 19 mobs and you'll be level 11 or so, but it is very wide open and they are easily avoided because of the expansiveness of the area - you can see forever.  Occasionally you'll happen upon a single lurker or something you can try to take out if you are feeling frisky.  You can stay relatively near your base camp and farm tier 3 Nevarrite (this is slow going when you are underleveled for the area as the game will only give you one at a time until you are more appropriately leveled for the area). If you do loot the tombs try to pick off enemies at range first using things like fire mine or your mark of the rift.  And lastly avoid getting to close to any of the rifts in that area.  You'll get murderized.
