It is I, Tony, your ruler. No wait, that's that other thread. I need some help from you PC guys out there. My laptop is old and inneffective, to the point of being unusable, bogged down with viruses and unused files. So, I wish to nuke the b*tch, and delete EVERYTHING, returning it to it's out of the box settings. Is that something I can do? There's nothing I need to keep on it, I want to wipe it and start fresh.

A sledgehammer!!!

You can format the disk. But that basically makes the data invisible not gone. So I'd suggest getting something like DBAN ( Dariks Boot And Nuke) that destroys any data on the disk. There's other free software that'll do the same thing too.

Or don't download so much pron.... I mean....... wha?

Do you have a link to some of that free software? I don't think that downloading something random I found on google would improve the situation.

I do need to leave the operating system so I can continue to use the computer, and I need a free solution since I'm broke.

BTW, streaming is where it's at

Simply put a Windows 7 or 8 install disk and boot with it. Then format EVERY C: D: E: ... drive.

Then your goal will be achieved. I don't take responsibility for deletion of your files... it's your choice!

So getting the OS back is going to be a pain in the ass, it seems, since I don't have a disk with one on it. I just want to play Morrowind, dammit.

Thanks for the help guys, looks like I'm boned until I can pick up an OS though.

If you wish to keep the OS without wiping it along with everything else, maybe this might help you out.

This does work if you want to make sure the data on the hard drive is permanently deleted, as it is still possible for data to remain after a format.

Helped my dad do it this way and he is actually enjoying Linux finding it to be much faster and more stable than the version of Windows he was using.

Many Linux users would suggest a version of Wine or another application to run windows based programs like Morrowind.

You could always look to Linux, which is free, and depending on how old your lappy is there are lightweight distros available like Lubuntu that could really help to increase performance. Of course this depends on whether you actually need Windows for certain software or not, because WINE apparently isn't perfect. Hell, you could just use Linux in the meantime until you get a new copy of Windows (insert version here).

From what I can see, this needs me to have the OS on disk, but I may be reading it wrong, I'm in way over my head when it comes to messing with computers, especially with Linux.

I'm going to look into this Lubuntu.the only thing I need for is transferring my various writing projects to a digital format and playing Morrowind.

He doesn't have the OS disc, though. That's the problem.

Two Linux distros that are very user friendly are Ubuntu and Mint.

There is a Linux version of Morrowind. You can also run the Windows version via WINE. It is rated 'platinum' (best there is, no bugs) for Mint.

If you wipe your lappy and install Linux you will likely be amazed at how well it performs. Most fanatics]/s] [s]devotees users of Linux get their start by installing it on an old laptop.

Snip

Pretty much. It would help to know just how old this laptop is though regardless, super old machines are likely very much part of the reason why light distros like Lubuntu and Xubuntu exist. If it's new/powerful enough to run the likes of Ubuntu/Linux Mint though, then that's fine, you don't really need a lightweight alternative.

And if you want a good solution to work, you could have a dual boot with CentOS for your job (I've used it on an old laptop and it worked very well).

If it's a Vista/W7 level laptop it would probably be worthwhile to download W8.1 on a USB stick and install that, you can legally get the required files from a Microsoft site as well. All you need is a 4GB USB stick (or bigger) and a little bit of time.

How can I install after wiping the laptop? I have a Galaxy S4 Android, can I install one of these from it?

Using the internet download an installation disk iso from either the Mint site or Ubuntu. Both sites have excellent easy to follow instructions on how to do this, by the way. Either burn an installation DVD (following the instructions) or load a flash drive (following the instructions). Then adjust your laptop's BIOS as needed (following the instructions). Install your new OS.

It's really pretty simple as long as you follow the distro's installation instructions.
