Thanks!
It's too difficult to create Aveline for the third time, and Thegrath was a masterpiece that I don't think I can create anymore. Too difficult. Bioware, give us an import option!!!!

My first playthrough was just under 190 hours, my second was about 175 hours. I've enjoyed DAI quite a bit, and I like my characters as well.

Well, on my first playthrough I spent at least thirty minutes in the race selection screen agonizing over the choice. Without any spoilers I tried to piece what I knew of each race's background and what I thought would be the most interesting to roleplay or create a headcanon.
I ultimately decided on a Qunari Mage. And when I read his character bio in the codex, it helped me create an image for a headcanon and how I could roleplay him.
And when I gave a mage-unique dialogue about summoning wisps to make some bandits surrender in a fight, it helped me significantly to see my Qunari as something of a prankster, so he became more sarcastic. I wasn't even thinking about it by the time I got to Skyhold. He had developed his own personality, almost without any input from me, and I was making decisions I thought he would make and not what I would make, which is what I almost always do on my first playthrough.
It created quite a fun gaming experience. It helped me stick to it.

Well, I had decided on a personality for them from the beginning, who they'll romance, what decisions they're gonna make, a tiny bit of backstory, nothing fancy.
My first playthrough was this 'saint' good female human mage who romanced Blackwall (so much regret), but then I played as an evil qunari warrior male that romance Iron Bull, so it was an extremely different playthrough on most accounts.

I do think it does help to create a back story for your characters but it is certainly not ideal. I usually just stick to whatever character I create first though I did start over on my first Warden. It just...seems to flow for me and I just make it work no matter what. Part of the joys of role playing I suppose.

I wrote a background story for him first, then added more snippets of his life. It also helps when other people like your character too.

Another character that I modeled off of Big Boss. If they only had the right eyes in the options, I think it would look even better. It can be fun to model your character off of other video game characters that you like. A Mario or Luigi Dwarf would be great. XD lol

I'm not quite sure if I said this already but I'm a huge Thegrath fan.
As for OP, I created a lovely personality plus backstory for my Inquisitor and then tried to roleplay him. Added more and more details about the character on his way through the game. Now I know him better than I know the bf, maybe even better than myself
. Well, being in love with his voice did help, and that ppl whom I showed him to seemed to like him.

I like to give myself a backstory before I get started but one or two of my Inquisitors haven't really got off the ground because the back story wasn't strong enough and I couldn't get into them. These were my human Inquisitors. I really do like to role play the character, make decisions consistent with their background and personality, even if that might not be what I would really do myself. I generally prefer to play elves; I've now played through to the end with 3 different elf characters, one female mage, one male mage and one male hunter. Each is distinctive, with a different character and backstory, even though I could imagine the clan with all three in it. They have made different choices in game and romanced different people. It helps to get the look right as well. One elf character looked awful once he was in game and I ended up deleting him because I couldn't bear the thought of 100 hours looking at him. I tried again and got it just right so I was happy to spend time with him.

Some characters just won't grab you, you know? I found that if I didn't spend much time in the cc, I didn't feel much of an investment to the character. They were just a little too cookie cutter for me.
Here are a couple of my favorites:
Arya Trevelyan, Knight Enchanter
Completed, 130 hours
Brienne Lavellan, Tempest DW
Completed, 125 hours
Niyaz Adaar, Artificer DW
In progress, around 100 hours
I have several that I've deleted. They looked ok, but I couldn't seem to get any ambition to play them.

Make your character matter to you! Decide WHO they are. The first time I played, I was just excited with the variety, but by the third playthrough, I found it really hard to create a character face I loved that didn't look like either of my previous two! So I decided- who is my inquisitor? Where is she from and what are her expectations? Then a face fell together for me.

I was extremely happy with my Cadash.
Nasir came out virtually perfect on my first run at making him, which was only about 20 minutes tops spent in the CC.
I had been planning him out for some time, having him be a good friend and contact of my Aeducan. I should note that I extensively rewrite the DA games in my own headcanon, so that's partially why I enjoyed him, because I already knew a lot about him, his path, the world, etc.. He was born in the Carta, lived in the Carta, knew nothing but the Carta for all his life until the Blight hit. He's the youngest child of the head of the Cadash Syndicate, and though he was good at what he did it was never something he particularly relished doing. The only good thing about it was the people he knew had his back.
Then he meets my Aeducan during the Blight and something changes. He feels like helping my Aeducan is what he was meant to do, for some reason. He wasn't able to explain it at the time, and thought it simply a bit more foolishness on his part, but he kept at it. And it helped turn things around for him.
He was sent to the Conclave not just as a spy for his father's machinations, but as a spy for Orzammar's interest. Then he winds up with the Mark and thrust in a role he couldn't possibly have imagined would be for him. I had also committed to the idea that he would have PTSD starting out, which would only get worse and worse. The Conclave's explosion was something he couldn't handle. He lost many friends there. Then Haven's assault happened, where no matter how hard he fought he saw too many people die. He eventually had a breakdown in Cassandra's arms post-Haven.
Still, he's not a dour person. He's a Sad Clown. He makes jokes a lot of the time, to cope with the pain.
I know Nasir pretty well now, and in a strange way Nasir has helped me flesh out the other characters in my personal headcanon'd 'verse. Was it tedious continuing the playthrough? Sure, but not because of boredom of Nasir. It was due to the lag and the drudgery that was the combat (too easy, but I did always enjoy seeing Nasir kick ass, with him knowing just what to do in battle when I wasn't in control). I pushed through, because Nasir deserved to have his story told. He's just as much a part of me as any character I make.
Because he takes a lot from me.
Here's a picture of the man himself (he's my avatar, for the record):

He's not completely perfect, mind you. His lip color is wrong in some lighting (like the 2nd pic) and his hair clips through his head. I hadn't noticed those things in the CC for whatever reason (maybe I was too hyped to play, or the CC was a PoS on me, or whatever) but with the Black Emporium I'll fix it and he will be perfect.
