About to start a new game and soften Leliana for the first time. Can I soften her if I conscript the mages? I ask because this is one of the only decisions she really dislikes.

On a side note, does the American male voice sometimes sound like Neil Degrasse Tyson to anyone else? Or am I just crazy?
Who you recruit has nothing to do with softening/hardening Leliana. None of the big decisions like that do. It's all in what you tell her throughout the game.
Your main story decision have no affect in your softening her or not. Just make sure to pick the 'nice' options when talking to her, and stop her from assassinating a guy instead of staying silent at the beginning of the game.
I believe the only points in the game that will actually emotionally affect her are:
- Killing or Sparing the Traitor Spy
- Telling her that the Inquisition's Soldiers aren't expendable or are expendable
- And have her spare Sister Natalie or kill her. If she kills Sister Natalie regardless of your decision to spare her, then you've messed up on the softening part.

The really important decision is right back at Haven; whether or not you intervene over the traitor spy. If you fail to stop her killing him, then no matter what you say or do subsequently it will have no affect; she's steeled.
If you save the spy, then the other decisions need to be taken as outlined and she will be okay. (They called it inspired not softened)
