Can't decide my mage's ability growth. I want spirit mastery, galvinism, and most of spirit healer. Right there I'm at 21 points, as in end-game by the time my build is done. And I want the upgraded version of crushing prison on top of it. And I don't know how to do it, gradually filling up all the trees over time or focus on maxing out a tree before moving onto the next. I don't intend to use my second specialization at all, most I'll use it for is the tiny bonus you get for picking the spec.

Just how much better is spirit damage over other forms? I'm trying to decide which stave will be my final game-ending one, but I can't choose. Would 35 spirit damage or 50 nature damage do more to most enemies?

Thanks for the help...

Spoiler

Well, so far I'm level 6 and have put all points into primal so far. I need to at least get the upgrade to rock armor. After that I think I'll jump back and forth between spirit and spirit... Healer. Kind of redundant to say that. I don't have enough points for everything though. No points for crushing prison, which means some other mage will need to learn it to do the awesome ogre kills. You know, the real reason crushing prison is worth it.

What you need to know is enemy resistances.

http://dragonage.wik...(Dragon_Age_II)

Judging by the chart Electricity is the best. Only 3 enemy types are flat out immune, 13 are vulnerable and 21 are "normal".

However fire does more damage because of the damage over time.

Spirit is not bad either.

There are two elemental trees. Primal and Elemental. Pick one (not both) and then invest some points into spirit.

Have another mage to cover the elementals that you don't.

For example if you're a mage that specialises in fire and ice magic, have a mage that specialises in lightning and earth.

That way you have all enemy weaknesses covered.

Dragon Age 2 is an old game now.

Dragon Age Inquisition is fairly new. So people are going to be adding new threads and new posts by the second.

The Dragon Age 2 section is going to have delayed responses.

I will bump this thread from time to time in the hopes you get some useful advice.

If you find that there are too few skill points, with DLC it is possible to reach Level 30.

In the above posts I have information about elemental weaknesses.

I... Know. I've done several mage playthroughs. This one is different though because I'm making a big change in my combat style to be more offense based. My typical builds were maxed out spirit healer and force mage with some primal thrown in for offense, but I always felt I was too passive and support based. This new build is me trying to do a more offense based one, though not ENTIRELY offense based since I'm still going to level spirit healer quite a bit. I'm pretty much switching my leveling from force mage into spirit instead. I think it will suit me better to be making enemies into bombs and shooting spirit bolts everywhere and making every enemy mage into my b!tch with dispel all while having pretty much infinite mana from having 2 separate masteries and dead syphon. Sounds more fun than loloverpoweredgraviticring.

I more wanted advice on when to get what and what exactly to prioritize, not an explanation on the different types of magic. There will be overlap between Merrill and I, she's always primal in my games.

I'm well aware it's old news to talk about this game. And I know about the levels, I own all the DLC and have hit the upper 20's/very low 30's before. But the game is pretty much over at that point, and I don't like it taking until end-game for my build to finally finish. Oh well.

Since I've started playing this year, I've only been able to effectively use 1 specialization on my characters. The 2nd one just ends up being a stat boost for selection.

In which case prioritise Fire.

Fire spells deal the most damage. Sure there are enemy types that are immune to this element, but you have non mages to handle them, not to mention other party members.

So max out fire and ice and you'll be able to decimate most enemy types no problem.

No, Anders handles fire. I don't like fire.

Earth and Lightning then.

Then have a bit of spirit magic and you're sorted.

Um... Didn't you read my posts? I already said spirit+primal+spirit healer was pretty much by build, I just wanted advice on when to get what and when to focus on what. Though I'll admit that I've been... Considering your idea. Elemental and primal both would be interesting since it would cover the entire "elemental" tree of Origins back when it was all 4 in one tree (4 abilities for each). But for now I'm sticking with spirit. If I try out primal+elemental, it will be later.

Early on, have 1 ice spell, 1 fire spell, 1 spirit spell and 1 lightning spell.

You'll have a tool for every trade very early on.

I don't need anymore posts, actually. I'm now level 20 and my build is basically over, I'm just putting points into whatever now.

That's Ok. You can consider it for your next mage run.

Not really. I won't be playing as a blood mage in DA2, period.
