http://map.ipviking.com/

this is a map showing the attackers and targets, and guess which nation is the most heavily targetted by a huge margin? Big businesses like home depot, sony target and others have been attacked, but they aren't very discriminating and will attack any company that lacks the education to defend themselves

Norse Dark Intelligence

Every second, Norse collects and analyzes live threat intelligence from darknets in hundreds of locations in over 40 countries. The attacks shown are based on a small subset of live flows against the Norse honeypot infrastructure, representing actual worldwide cyber attacks by bad actors. At a glance, one can see which countries are aggressors or targets at the moment, using which type of attacks (services-ports).

Hovering over the Attack Origins, Attack Targets, or Attack Types will highlight just the attacks emanating from that country or over that service-port respectively. Hovering over any bubble on the map, will highlight only the attacks from that location and type. Press s to toggle table sizes.

Norse exposes its threat intelligence via high-performance, machine-readable APIs in a variety of forms. Norse also provides products and solutions that assist organizations in protecting and mitigating cyber attacks.

I've seen a few comments among various tech communities that world war three will be fought digitally... nothing terribly serious has happened yet, but it does make a certain amount of sense. Why throw out human lives and expensive vehicles all the way across the other side of the world when you can just develop sophisticated surrviellance, decryption and encryption software, and programme AI to handle the bulk of the work for us? And there are those who believe the apathy and ignorance and techincal illiteracy of Americans is putting them at a disadvantage.... Perhaps in a couple of decades it will be the americans working to produce iphones for china?

Ehhhh.

"Digital war" is a term that gets thrown around a lot. It certainly is a threat, especially as foreign governments are becoming increasingly more focused on covertly (and sometimes non-covertly) compromising systems and causing very expensive and dangerous damage to their target's infrastructure.

On the other hand, these are private companies who are leaving their data security open. It's not the federal government's job to make sure companies have zero data breaches, just like its not their job to make sure people lock their doors. Don't like how Target let your credit card get stolen? Don't shop at Target. Don't enjoy having your personal information leaked by Sony every six months? Then don't buy a PS4. It's a private market problem and will be solved with lrivate market solutions - namely, people will go where they feel their data is most secure.

I have yet to see anyone grab an assault rifle over having a hacker use their credit card number to buy porn or see anyone demand air strikes for having their medical history leaked online. While data has become a huge part of our lives, nude selfies of famous actresses won't start World War 3.

I didn't mean it like that...

fact is that the economic damage is very real... and that there is no gruesome footage to show like for 9/11, or the charlie hedbo massacare makes it so much harder to convince everybody to get a good understanding of digital security and why failing to do so will hurt your business which can be bad for the whole nation if enough businesses get hit. there is also the issue with numbers... if china has 1/4 of the whole worlds population, and anybody with a computer and internet access can steal money from every other country of much smaller populations, and their government makes syber security a priority for their education system... well, there is no telling what their people could do.

Still, it comes down to how the system works. If your credit card information gets stolen from a leak at Home Depot, Home Depot pays the bill. Or, more accurately, Home Depot's insurance policy pays the bill. Not to mention many of the transactions in question are reversed by the banks involved, leaving the companies who had the stolen money paid to them left holding the bag as well.

The damage is real, but the reactions are already occurring. Improved systems to not only safeguard data but also prevent stolen information from being allowed to make transactions are being implemented across all industries. So there are safeguards against us waking up one morning and finding every bank account has been reduced to zero.

It's a huge threat to the economy, but it's also not capable of shutting it down overnight, either. There are automated financial systems in place that block transactions of the size necessary to do any real, long-standing damage to institutions.

I see you guys are slowly replacing your fear of Russia for China.

Putin no like.

Also, did you let the map run for a while? after like 5 minutes, these are the top two origin countries:
365 China
321 United States

You're making it seem like the US is under heavy attack here, but as always, you do the same stuff yourself. Of course, by far the most attacks are aimed at the US. But, that's what you get for always meddling in other people's business.

And no one's attacking China :D

We spend more on our military then Russia and China combined, we have more aircraft carriers then every other country combined. We have bases all over the world, as well as allies that are powerful in their own right(The UK, France, Poland, Etc) the most advanced military technology the world has ever seen, as well as a nuclear arsenal that consists of a couple thousand Nukes.

We will be fine. There wont be a ww3. The United States is simply too powerful for anyone to mess with. The only threat that faces us(from a military standpoint) is Russia's nuclear arsenal. Not even china has the nuke capability yet.
