Treasure Rooms - Big Baddie In There or Not?

I recall early in the game BW had two types of chests, so it was easy to know which room would spawn a baddie or not.  They changed this in one of the patches, since it was unintended to begin with.

I have seen some posts of people saying to other players "there's no baddie in that room, open it, go get the gold while we fight mobs."

Looking at these rooms I still do not know what is the 'tell' as to whether the room has a baddie or not... they look the same to me.  I know... I should know this..

Anyhow, what's the scoop?  How can you tell if a treasure room contains a baddie or is a freebie room?

It's pretty much down to room size and you need to learn which room is which on whichever map. A small room with pretty much only a chest in contains no bad things. A larger room with steps may. That's it really.

If there are mobs when you open the door, it will not contain a baddie.

But otherwise you will have to look at room size, and which map you are playing to fully guess it.

All Small-Free-Rooms are on the same place on the same map, so its just a memory thing.

Thanks all.  I was asking from the "just by looking at the door" perspective, but I see that is not the case.  I just gotta LOL at myself, after all the MP I've played, I should have tehse memorized by now.

As has been said already, chests that are definitely free and clear are:

1. Any treasure rooms that already had enemies inside when you opened the door.

2. Those smallish rooms that are also sort of awkward-shaped most of the time.

3. Any chest that's in a corridor-area where you pull a lever to open a door and proceed further in the level via an alternate route instead of the "main" route.

If those all make sense? Otherwise, the big square rooms are a chance of guardians (unless Rule # 1 was in effect for that room).

Am almost wondering if it's worth making a screenshot thread showing safe/potentially non-safe room layout types or if that's just overkill. *shrugs*

If there are guardians in a zone 1 room upon opening the chest, they're always corpses (or so it seems, I've never pulled a revenant or horror in 1/5 before).

Thanks DR.  Yeah, some of the rooms are obvious in terms of baddies or no.

The thing is some rooms look exactly the same and sometimes a baddie will appear and sometimes they don't.  I think Tevinter vanilla map is a good example.  You know that room where you have flights of stairs (on either side) leading up to the chest?  Sometimes they'll contain a Horror or Revnant, sometimes not.  It's things like that I am unsure of.

Anyhow, I'll just pay more attention as I go and see about memorizing which rooms are which.

That siad, if you are super bored and really feel like doing a pic thread, please do.  You know we benefit from your sharing cool stuff.  :)

I've noticed that, too, in regards to the corpse guardians.

I wonder if there's any "tell" for getting an Arcane Horror vs a Revenant, or if that's just luck of the RNG draw.

Well, yes, those kinds of rooms are the "might contain guardian" rooms. I don't believe any are guaranteed to have a guardian... just some are guaranteed NOT to have a guardian. The non-guaranteed rooms are a toss-up whether you get lucky or not. They are rooms you know are "potentially not safe" vs "room I know is a free, no-risk" chest. ;)

Hadn't noticed that, good insight - testing to follow  :)

Right, that's because there's no way to KNOW a Big Baddie is definitely in there.

You can learn to identify rooms that do not have one, and then rooms that might have one.

The Tevinter rooms you are referring to fall into the latter category, no way to know until you open that chest.

Just open em all up and if there is a Revenant just go running back to the already engaged group screaming in terror, that's what I do.

At least that way 4 people get to deal with it, not just one  :P

Ok, so overall it is pretty much what I had thought.  You cannot tell by looking at the door, only once you've opened it.

Note to new players: this is teabaggin' material right here

I have to LOL since have actually done that.  "50/50.. *opens chest*  oh ****, a Revnant!!  lovely, it just completely ignored me and is now going for the team who is busy with a mob."  yeah, last time I ever did that.

Sort of. Mostly.

As mentioned before, there are some where you know it's a safe room based on its location in the zone. For example, there's a certain zone on the Orlesian Chateau where to the immediate left of the font room/transition room is a treasure room, but almost everyone seems to forget it and goes barreling off to the right because ENEMIES IN SIGHT and then up the stairs and down the corridor to the rest of the map.

That immediate treasure room is ALWAYS a freebie. Always. I don't have to see the inside of it because the inside will forever and always look the same. For that particular treasure room in that particular location.

I think I'll go on a screenshot safari tonight. :)

Not at the door but the location you can.  There are some doors that are always freebies.

On the one large chateau area with a huge open room just to the right of the exit door is a door that is always a freebie.

Another one, you just enter an area, have one spawn and there is a set of stairs going down to a door.  The next spawn is to the left.  The door down the stairs is always a freebie.  (Though by going down there you can activate a spawn below.)

There are several others like this.  Some you can even see into if it is a mage door.

Yes.  There's a door to freebie gold on tevinter that players often run right past as well.  Yay, pics!!  :)

Right.  Some of the doors you know are freebies.  It's usually (not always though) the doors that require a specific class to open that may spawn baddies.

Well all of the doors to treasure rooms, freebies or not require a specific class to open.

Uhhhhhhh....

The treasure rooms always require a specific class for entry. Purple wards for mages, golden locks for rogues, and stone for warriors.
