It differs depending on the person as with most things.

Honestly the idea that the older a person is the grumpier they are doesn't really seem so out there (and kind of applies to more than just gaming), but this is also true.

It kind of makes sense though, like older people are more limited on time, well, that's because they are more limited on time, we're all still mortal after all.

realy i think its more the fact we have been there before and seen all this bollocks before.

now we are all rapeists and sexists even though women have been gamers since this all began.

we just want to play cool games and eat our snackes whithout being told we are evil. Thats how we like it.

Biggest myth in gaming? Subjective.

What I think is one of the biggest myths in gaming?

That video games make people violent. Don't let a few mentally disturbed people with prior, murderous concerns pull us gamers all down tbh.

Correlating gamers with violence is just like saying anyone who drinks is a family beater. Video games have little to do with causes of psychopathic events and such, but it's based on each individual person's of perception of life itself. Video games are only a diminutive factor in crazy people's alleged problems and influences imo.

Biggest myth in gaming right now is easily that games cause or perpetuate violence and sexism. For years people have been peddling the idea, and for years, study after study has concluded that there is no clear link between violent/sexist behaviour and video games. No more so than movies, novels, television or any other entertainment medium.

http://techraptor.ne...k-sexism-gaming

The study, conducted by Johannes Breuer, PhD, Rachel Kowert, PhD, Ruth Festl, PhD, and Thorsten Quandt, PhD, sought to ascertain whether playing video games could be connected to sexism in gamers themselves. The study was longitudinal, meaning data was gathered from a group of subjects over a long period of time – in this study data was taken in three “waves”. Initially, the researchers identified 12,587 gamers out of an initial survey of 50,012 people aged 14+. A random sample of 4,500 was taken for the first wave, the second wave had 2,199 gamers while the third had 902 as financial constraints dictated smaller groups.

The conclusion drawn by the study is that there is no statistically significant association between video games and sexist attitudes;
More interestingly, however, there was no cross-sectional association between sexist attitudes and overall video game use for both men and women. On the longitudinal level, the only statistically significant finding was a negative association between video game use at time 1 and sexist attitudes at time 2 for males ( p = 0.027). However, the size of this effect (b = –0.08) can be considered negligible. All other longitudinal associations were both small and nonsignificant (b < 0.13).

Unfortunately, studies like these don't really change much. The narrative is held up by public figures who profit from the concept, publications who get hits by catering to the morally outraged and by people who exist mostly outside the community who get involved because it allows them to get on their soapbox and preach their politics. Why? Because most people who actually play games realise that it's just a form of entertainment like any other.

Of course, that doesn't cover the "oh I am personally offended by x, y and z in games, remove it because it's oppressive" crowd, but a lot of people who push the idea in the media that games cause violence or sexism really aren't gamers, I find.

Also, I don't even need to find a quote from the books to Stannispost because my sig already has me covered. :)

Another big myth is that gaming is expensive. Hell, it is, but adjusted for inflation it's cheaper than in the past. AAA games really ought to retail for $80-100 if gamers don't want to get nickel and dimed through DLC. Of course, being Australian, $80-90 for AAA games has already been the standard for years. So I don't particularly mind, even if it pushes past $100.

But with the AA market re-emerging with stuff like Div:OS, PoE, Endless Legend, Cities: Skylines, Talos Principle, the Metro games and Telltale games inserting themselves in-between cheap indies and AAA gaming, the market is starting to become diverse enough again that you can easily find what you're looking for without needing to pay top dollar. Well, not if you're a console gamer. Yet. But I think it will happen for console gamers in the future.

You know I feel like the biggest myth in gaming might be that people actually care about the games themselves.. increasingly things seem to be valued almost entirely/completely by virtue of it's connection, whether that's gamerscore points, steam profiles, social networking connections, etc.

The idea of a solitary experience where you engage with this slab of game seems to be so secondary at this point, which is kind of the experience I like best still for whatever reason.

The biggest myth in gaming is that gaming isn't dead.

Gaming is dead. Or I guess I should say, real gaming is dead. What Kefka112 said is one reason. But there are many others- "AAA" games ruining the industry, death of the middle tier developer, youtuber/twitch bait games, Call of Duty syndrome, EA and big publishers quantity over quality attitude, the lackluster real state of the Xbox One and PS4 (neither has barely one great game, let alone a handful, like they should at this point).

Gaming, specifically "AAA" gaming, is going on fumes right now. It needs a big kick. Or in 3 or 4 years...... We're looking at another crash. Big time.

To add to the video game =/= violent person debate.

I played games when I was a kid. I didn't get angry and violent because I saw it in a game (I knew even at 5 that sort of stuff should stay in a game and not real life) I got angry and violent because people picked on me. I remember getting hit in the face, I lost my temper and chased this person around the school (swearing) and I got into trouble as well. Almost as bad as he did.

Gaming does not make people violent. Bullying in school and being punished for being bullied makes people violent.

I don't know, it's not even just games in my opinion, it's movies, perhaps even anime, there is just an extremist now now now now consumptive attitude towards it all which seems like it's kind of making things sort of dysfunctional.

I'm guessing people might just eventually get bored of the deluge of internet commentary and sharing and move on to something else if they haven't already.

Eh? I like the stuff like FMA and things a lot.. and I know there's not a lot of stuff in the future that interests me. I wish there were more kind of cool anime like 12 Kingdoms and Ghost in the Shell and stuff as much as you probably.

Is that the one where the Prince had no chin? He had ample elsewhere, but he had no chin. None.

And everyone mostly just looked cold. Like the set was 60 degrees or something.

Because I never saw that video. Twice.

Yeah. I agree. Also, I think society as a whole have just gotten more dumb and ADD throughout the years. The gimme, gimme, now, now society and instant gratification makes everything so shallow. Pop music is also victim to this. It doesn't leave room for innovation at all.

Speaking of, another reason why there might be a crash of the "AAA" gaming industry in the next 3-5 years, is "AAA" games have a HUGE budget now. This stifles and restricts devs from pushing the envelope and evolving series and games too much. Thus killing inovation and thus risking burnout my customers.

As you said, people will eventually get bored and begin to look elsewhere.

When I said the game industry is dead, I was really talking about "AAA" games, I think indie games are doing just fine. But I do think AAA games will die if they don't do something innovative and do it fast. I don't know what it is. But.... Last gen it was connectivity and multiplayer and incredibly innovative titles- (Gears of War, Mass Effect,Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption, Last of Us just to name a few) and, I hate to say it, But Call of Duty and the huge success of the Wii, lol.

I don't really know what this gen's ace in the hole is gonna be. I really don't. Just look at the state of gaming and games on XB1 and PS4.... The best games for those systems are all old games pretty much,( with the exception of Blood Borne and Sunset OD) but the best PS4 game until bloodborne came out was The Last of Us remake. The best game on XB1 is probably MCC since it's been fixed (another reason AAA gaming will fail- they release broken game after broken game now). But again, all old games and many gen 7 console releases.

Hell, the best slasher action game for PS4 will be the God of War 3 remake they're doing..... Ha.

Where are the great gen 8 games???

They're nowhere to be found thus far.

By this time in the 360s release (So back around end of 06 Q1 of 07') we had Gears of War, Just Cause, Saints Row, Prey, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Elder Scrolls Oblivion..... All of these games were released in ONE YEAR after the 360 was released..... Holy Fvck!!! Those are some amazing year 1 games, eh....

And I won't even begin to compare 2007 (2 years after the 360 had released, and the equivalent to 2015 for Xbox One/PS4) to 2015. Even if the Witcher 3 is to be great (which it will) Bloodborne, HALO 5's hopefully greatness,Tomb Raider, maybe Arkham Knight will be great..... It still won't even grace 2007's... Greatness.

See, what's happening is that the AAA gaming industry is.. Indeed.... Running out of great games.

And that is a problem. Because AAA games are what drive and feed the industry and without great, and innovate games (Like gen 7 had in spades) This gen will die and thus the industry with it. If the big devs and publishers keep releasing games like we've had in the first 17 months of this gen........ It's gonna go up in smoke and will be the largest collapse in entertainment history and I don't think, unlike the video game crash of the 80s, that it will come back. Because I don't think SONY (and they probably couldn't even if they wanted too... Because they have no money) or Microsoft will want to reinvest in the industry. Nintendo will hang on, but... They might be done before 5 years if they don't knock it out of the park with NX (but that's another story). Steam and thus PC gaming will be fine, but it will be affected too and will become a very niche type of platform.

Basically the state of AAA games are in big trouble in 5 years, maybe less, if they don't innovate and begin to turn out the great games in droves for gen 8 consoles.

Time will tell.

Something tells me your definition of "going downhill" and the one currently employed by the English language are not the same.
